Well I am on the fence about ordering an EV but this may have swayed me. I have family on Fraserburgh, Scotland a round trip of 1260 miles then add in a few runarounds I am sure it would be about 1700miles. I love the orange btw. Thanks for a normal road test, enjoyed it. What maps do you use for the chargers?
@PlanetautoUK2 жыл бұрын
Thanks John, glad you enjoyed it. We use the Zap-Map App. It's got loads of info on it on top of location - like pricing (it's obviously not fool proof, as it does need user interaction, and if no-one has checked in at a location, it may show that a charger hasn't been used in several months, making you wonder if it's broken. We had this quandry with Dundee Tesco charger. It hadn't been used in ages, so we charged somewhere else. When we got to it, the charger seemed fine!) Some EV's now have their own systems built into the SatNav or their own App. *A

Looking at your useful display of charging times I notice for the use of a home 2.2kw 3 pin charging, it says in brackets (emergency). Is this just refuring to the long charge time of over 20 hours, or is there any danger of drawing 13amps from a standard wall socket?? I do very little mileage, so charging the car overnight, every night would probably be my best option.

@PlanetautoUK10 ай бұрын
I vary it, as we drive a classic Mercedes it’s anything from a gentle drive to full on hot hatch b road driving if the traffic conditions permit. Primarily it’s normal flow of traffic with the odd overtake or launch - Motorways, flow of traffic the faster better well over 60 due to cars not knowing how to let vehicles out.

The arrival of the MG4 electric hatchback on the car market is a big step towards price parity with ICE vehicles...In addition, brand snobs should remember that an expensive price does not always mean a good product, because often car manufacturers mask poor design or a poorly organized overpriced production process behind an expensive price...Let's see how the MG4 works over a slightly longer period, say - 60,000 miles...! Map screen looks very clear to read,is that Google maps or MG's maps you are using?I note EV sales have slowed slightly.I think people are having doubts before committing.Could be the fact that,car tax coming and folk are worried electric charges are going to continue skyward.Also public charging points not working,or a queue. Technology is great ,but it's the cost factor that most people consider the most important,so (like myself) not jumping in until the dust has finally settled!
@sailingoctopus12 жыл бұрын
An EV is still significantly cheaper to run and with the MG4 you are not paying a purchase price premium. If EV sales falter because of the tax changes then the next government will rescind the tax, as the commitments made at Paris are predicated on a transition to EVs; failure to meet Paris commitments will be very expensive.

Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries (LiFePO4) last between 3,000 and 5,000 cycles (up to 10,000 in ideal conditions), so are good for roughly between 640,000 miles and 1,090,000 miles and so will outlast any ICE car (particularly as the drive-train has about 40 moving parts compared with the thousands in an ICE car) Also, LFP batteries don't catch fire, so take that all you EV-hating ICE-loving arseh0le dinosaurs driving around in vehicle with a fuel tank full of a liquid that has more explosive force than TNT.

Thanks for that, made me think a lot. If the charging network is extended fast, they will sell more EV's. The more people I talk to ( rural dwellers like me ) the only problems are, initial outlay, range anxiety and lack of charging infrastructure. Also the fact is, they now cost more to run than an ICE vehicle. It is down to government. When you look at what Norway has achieved, it puts Britain to shame.
@PlanetautoUK2 жыл бұрын
It is shocking to see how much the price for charging has jumped up recently, Jon. It was also a sad day when the gov scrapped the EV grant 😔 It’s good to see how much effort has been put into extending the charging infrastructure, and here in the Lakes there is quite a lot of them now. One of the reasons we chose Scotland for our road trip was to showcase how well the MG4 does in terms of range, and how easy it was to charge it. 👍 *A

@@PlanetautoUK Glad your area has a reasonable network. Here in East Anglia it is only towns that seem to have a few. None of the rural petrol stations on major "A" roads have any. MG certainly seem to be leading the way with range, and I certainly feel that it is range anxiety stopping many from a purchase. Enjoy your down to earth reviews btw. Best Wishes.
@PlanetautoUK2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jon, none of our petrol stations have them, but chargers are popping up all the time mainly type two in the small towns, also Booths supermarkets tend to have at least few Instavolt rapid chargers.

They don't cost more to run than petrol, assuming you can home charge. If you can't, don't buy one. Home charging for 10,000 miles a year would cost me £330. What's the petrol cost for that? However, yes if you're going to use public chargers only, then that won't work out well at present.

Alternatives to the A96. A944 (great name for a road) and A939 to Nairn . Still way too many compromises for electric cars , planning routes around charge points , I stop for breaks in the middle of nowhere.

That is a really cool road name, I think I’ve been down one of the alternatives many years ago, it was certainly off the beaten track, swooping hills. I think it went past a whisky distillery, Talisker or maybe Chivas. Decent Solar charging would make middle of nowhere stops possible, thank you Richard

Honestly you won't regret it. Long journeys can be a pain, but so long as you plan well and don't do too many it is bearable, you just need to plan carefully and take it easy. In many ways an EV makes driving much more pleasant, which compensates for the occasional public charging hassle. If you can charge at home, at work or at a nearby podpoint and if you don't do many journeys over 200 miles then an EV is immeasurably more pleasant to own than an ICE car.

There is a mistake Tesco 50kw chargers have a 50p a unit price up from the 28p it use to be. as they now charge 28p from the 7kW chargers. This price came in from 1 November Should there not be a video for the whole 800 miles with total cost, cost per a mile. I could do that trip and cost less, paying 69p for charging is just not good when you could get on CPS chargers for most of the places for 20 to 30p for 50kW chargers how you planned the trip and which chargers you decided to stop at and if you had back up locations if not working already planned out
@PlanetautoUK2 жыл бұрын
It seems you’ve missed the prices, stats and the whole point of the video and not taken into account this was filmed in October - these prices are all correct - we do these trips to show all options, we highlight this at multiple points. If it was an economy run we wouldn’t have used Tesla, this channel will never be restricted by cost, bottomline is it’s cheaper than petrol, and that’s never going to concern us either hence why our daily is a 31 year old classic Merc that returns 25mpg at best.
