Best comment that you made "What's the point". All the youtubers to grab view, always trumpet "this is the camera that is going to destroy camera X". Just leave it alone. When it comes out it will come it. It won't destroy anything or any brand. A camera is a camera.

The majority of mainstream cameras come from manufacturers in Japan. I do think the camera industry is kind of in the same place the cellphone market was in the early 2000's. All the phones were similar with manual keypads, small screens, very similar operation between brands...then along came the iPhone, radically different and the rest is history. I DO believe the camera market is RIPE for disruption.

Hey Simon, great perspective on DJI althought I'm not surprised. I got my r5m2 today and have been playing around with it. A few of my thoughts so far. the bad: menus suck, (lots to get used to) but that's it so far. The good: I love the fact that the file structure is keeps video and stills separate. Clog2 is a game changer for me anyway, so much easier to grade and the DR is truly amazing. battery seems about the same as the R5 for runtime. It feels good in the hand, a bit heavier than in the r5 but in a good way. So far it might replace my R3 and I'll be selling my R5. Anyone want a used R5 body? lol

It's time for computational photography features. When recently taking photos in low light with a large window behind my subject, I had to blow out the highlights to get my subject properly exposed. I took a shot with my phone from the same spot and it seems to have done some internal exposure bracketing without me having to do anything. The printed pattern on the window could be seen AND my subject was properly exposed. There was a fair bit of noise, but overall I felt like it did something amazing, in-the-moment, without me having to "prepare" the camera before taking the shot. Other camera gear channels have talked about this and I think it should be a feature new camera bodies should have.

I went out with my R5 II yesterday to photograph hummingbirds. The animal eye AF was much better than the R5. Overall, the AF was faster and better. I loved dialing down the fps in ES. The camera with grip felt really nice in my hands. I didn't try pre-capture. I noticed last night that B&H had LP-E6P batteries and the BG-R20 grip in stock. I made the right decision for my needs buying this camera. Have a great day, Simon!

DJI has joined the L-Mount alliance. So if they produce a camera there would be some lenses available from the beginning. However they have to find their market share - and I think it would be very difficult if they ship just another SLR. So there has to be something disrupting with their camera line. It could be something for the masses but L-Mount lenses would not fit to that strategy. So I am curious to see what will happen :) But in my opinion at least some of the rumors are willingly released by the manufactures to generate consumer attentention at no cost... So somehow I hope for something real new and disrupting but I also know it could be just something ordinary hyped with some social media going viral...

Hi Simon, they may well disrupt things .. but at first they'll be attacking mostly Sony and their collection of EVF-less bodies, which makes sense when DJI would mainly intend to bring phone-like experiences into the ILC market. If you'd want to swipe and touch via EVF, you'd need to apply Canon eye-control tech in the reviewing mode and menus 😛

My prediction is a mirrorles camera body based off the sensor on the 6k ronin 4D that can do video and photos but easily can be put on the 4D for the z-axis benefit. Also better for tripod use and larger lenses and uses many of the same tech/part of the sensor on the 4D. That would be the perfect camera and it would also have a way better menu ii than any other brand.

Called this a long time ago. Particularly after the Pocket 3 released which is extremely good for the price. I was telling a videographer friend DJI would be pushing into this market too, and offering cheaper comparable goods perhaps within a decade. (They literally put out new/improved drones annually.) Canon and Sony better start innovating and stop overcharging. DJI is coming for them. Quality gear, intuitive interfaces, lower prices.

Not long ago a few former DJI engineers started a little company caller Bambu Labs, they turned the 3D printing world on their heads, they single handedly rewrote how and what consumer level 3D printers should be. If DJI wants in on a shrinking camera market they will own it and change it for the better, Nikon should be worried ....

Unlikely they are free to build any camera to use any of the 3 main mounts RF, Z, E without some penalty and huge restrictions.

👍 Any such new competition is welcome, IF they tackle the price hike of the other brands. Hopefully, DJI doesn't say "we are the home of Hasselblad, and our new camera's pricing will remind you of that" 🙈😉 I'm concerned about the current mirrorless system camera markets and its current state/future, both of which are choked by an obvious price hike. Their 'entry' level cameras start at $2500 or €3000 by now. Every new model seems wanting to add up to +500,- on top of that. If DJI breaks out of this price hike, and offers very decent value for below-current-average pricing, that would be good news (for us, for DJI, and for the market via competition effects).

Sounds interesting but not sure what to expect with their hasselblad line up and 4D cameras. If this is going to be a mirrorless body to compete then I can imagine it having an easy to use interface combination from the Hasselblad cameras and those found on the 4D. Where I think they can shine is compatibility with all of their accessories like the gimbals, microphones and transmission systems. There are so many cameras out there that work with their systems but aren’t 100% compatible. Internal 32bit float and seamless wireless connectivity to the DJI mics. Possibly having an enhanced version of IBIS. Many flavors of video formats. They could shoot for an 8K sensor since they already have one on the 4D. I can’t say it’ll disrupt the market though. The osmo pocket 3 targets a massive audience because of its form factor and ease of use. But the pro market is completely different to that. Let’s see what happens

Right now, it looks like Canon is getting ready to abandon their M mount. It is a good time for the adapter companies to come out with mount adapters to take the M mount lenses to other systems (if they can). If you think about it, the best mount to take M mount lenses would be M4/3, because there should not be a problem from image circle coverage. The only problem is whether there is room for a physical adapter. Aside from that, it looks like the Nikon mount can swallow anything. 🙂

Nikon Z has the problem though, that it has an unnecessarily large, gaping hole. That makes a Z camera look ugly when smaller lenses such as M are mounted via an huge-to-small adapter? Even Nikon Z's own APS-C line looks ugly (in conjunction with their mounted APS-C lenses), for this very reason.

I completely disagree with this video, except for the part where Sony is becoming a market leader. Canon is declining rapidly, and the only thing saving it is its excellent color science. Nikon offers the most to the user, but the Nikon mount... No, thank you! Then we have two underdogs that are really good: BLACKMAGIC and PANASONIC. DJI is the revolutionary one. How is it that this video only mentions the Pocket 3 on the DJI side? It's a decent entry-level camera with 10-bit color-great for amateurs-but DJI made the RONIN 4D, a true revolution! If they create a mirrorless camera, and I really hope they do, they should go for full-frame or medium format, with good video tools, shutter angle and false colors, excellent stabilization and autofocus, color science like the RONIN 4D, 10 or 12-bit color, and if they include built-in variable NDs, make the mount easily changeable (or use L-MOUNT), or even use the RONIN 4D mounts, DJI will DOMINATE the market. It’s going to be a game-changer, and I want in on it!

Of course, when you set it up it requires complete read/write and change authority over all the photos in your gallery. This includes ones that are not taking using a DJI Product. This includes copying the images and using them for AI training. This is a problem for commercial photographers who may be under restrictive covenants such as NDAs for their work products that belong to the company that hired them.

Did I miss the part where DJI owns Hasselblad? I’m quite surprised you’re comparing DJI mirrorless to an Osmo Pocket when DJI owns Hasselblad. They will take tech from Hasselblad and video tech from their DJI cameras and integrate it into a higher end mirrorless camera. Something in the $3500-$5500 segment. The question that I have is how open will this mount be to 3rd party makers, because DJI isn’t really known for their lenses and it will be interesting to see how many they initially offer and how many they plan on producing per year.

I would not be trusting their EVs. A lot of them have reliability issues. Once can't start a car company and release a vehicle in three years and expect all to go well. Most aren't even making money either.

@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Well most would be losing money because of As of 2023, China has around 300 electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, including both domestic and international companies. This is down from an estimated 500 in 2019. But the Top players are doing well. Same will happen once the Chinese start doing Cameras to compete with Sony, Canon, and Nikon.

Look up Shanghai Xiaoyi Technology Co. Ltd. Their camera was the Yi M1 (I have one). It has/had a M4/3 mount and records 4K video. It is made in Indonesia. It has all the cost advantages of being made in the area, it performs well and there is no political issue, since it is not a Communist China product. And yes, I did run into some bigotry from people who did not know that there was a difference between C China and Taiwan. The 20mp sensor is still "contemporary". I don't know if the company is still around. . . .

I just can’t believe that DJI would do well competing full frame against cameras from the big three.

No one expected Sony to do well either against entrenched Nikon and Canon, but here we are.

I'd also say, look at the 'continental shifts' of TV-making brands: Europe/US > then Japan > then Korea > then China. Each shift leaving the previous one behind. The camera market is still stuck in the original shift Europe > then Japan. Maybe, not for too long?

It's a camera, the limits on cameras is processing and DJI didn't come up with next level processing. It will not destroy anyone or anything. It will just be more competition. All of this hype is absolutely silly. They build drones with basically action/cellphone level photo/video, they are nothing stellar in that space either as far as the photo/video is concerned. This will all hinge around a gimmick or two. Like everything else, it a huge NOTHING burger until it arrives.
