I have come to regard your demos of clubs as the best in a universe of at least a dozen that I watch because of your testing at three speeds and all over the face. By doing this you provide the information they need to the widest range of players from plus 2 handicaps to 22 handicaps. The 245 irons are designed to help those with slower swing speeds. That is the market Mizuno is aiming at. So your slower speed test is extremely useful. It is of little use for me and most average and senior golfers to watch some tester with pro level swing speeds smash a 7 iron 190 yards when we are hoping to get carry up to 150 from 135. So thank you. By the way, does the increased performance on low strikes come at the cost of inferior performance on high strikes that we duffers often make?
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 5 ай бұрын
Any performance a manufacture tries to include for high strikes get wasted by the ground interaction straight away. Only the ball being on a tee would help. But generally no manufacturer put forgiveness designs for high strikes 👍🏻

Great stuff as usual Jay! Gonna wait until you do the 225 vs 245 video but I’m pretty sure the 245’s will end up in my bag replacing my 225’s. Been very pleased with my 225’s but can’t wait to hit the 245’s. Saw where Luke ended up with a full set of 245’s in his bag for 2024 so that in itself should tell everyone just how good they are.

As always fantastic reviews. Hopefully, we will get a 923 forged vs 245 review. I purchased the 923 forged as it wasn't as clunky as the 225 and was more forgiving (for me anyways.) Could you test it in a higher iron like 5i? I know the standard fitting is with 7i but I hope that all that tungsten in the 245 will cure my low height in the 5i. Now the next thing I hope you can work on is having Mizuno make the 243 in lefty... kidding of course.

I tried these today as the demo heads arrived at the local PGA TOUR Superstore. They ARE tiny, when compared to the original Mizuno hollow "blades," the MP-20 HMB, which I currently use. As an 8-12 handicap, I have no difficulty with the MP-20 HMB, but found the 245s an completely different animal.

As always Jay, great and useful content. I absolutely love my 225's so there is zero chance I'll move away from them. I played MP30 - sweet in the middle but yeouch if you missed. MP64 - Great, but blade forgiveness. 225's are easily the best irons I've ever played. 245's sound great - same direction. When you step up and mishit a ball, over a ravine, and see that sucker land on the green or just off left or right - it's a game changer! (11.7HCP) You are producing some of the most useful golf content out there for us amateurs. Multiple swing speeds, detailed miss data. Great stuff!

Excellent vid...thanks. I attended your teaser vlog last week, and now I see why you were so confident about the 245, especially for thin shots. For reference I am a 9HC lefty, played Mizuno Grad, and several MP iterations, but now on Apex with Recoil graphite, all due to aging and loss of swing speed. I will for sure be looking at 245, and ideally back to steel shafts, as I tend to pull my current irons. I live in Boston and my teaching Pro is in Ohio, so I do not see him much...more relying on retail stores to customize my fit. Grrr.

I really value your tests and have come to regard them as the most useful of about a dozen I watch because of your three swing speeds and hitting the ball all over the face. This is particularly important with an iron like the 245 that Mizuno designed for the slower speed player market even though players with faster speeds might like it. It is of little use for me to watch someone with the swing speed of a pro smash a 7 iron 190 yards. So thank you. By the way, did you do some hits high on the face to see if the help from tungsten on low strikes comes at the sacrifice of carry on high strikes?

@ssmith954 they are pretty. My problem is that I'm a higher ss player (110 driver) and I don't need help with distance or height but forgiveness. Seems like my options are a blade or hitting a 30⁰ 7 iron. I just wish they made a 245 type iron with 34⁰ 7 iron and a more neutral cog.

@AskGolfNut I wouldn't mind the extra bounce as Mizuno are a little low, but I worry about adding loft to an already low cog iron as Im a higher ball hitter, driver SS around 112. Feel like they might go too high. I wish there were some more choices in the higher forgiveness but traditional loft sets. Even the 243 is a 32⁰ 7 iron and that's Mizuno's 3rd players iron after the 241 and 9xx Tour. The 243 seemed like the perfect opportunity to provide a forgiving cb in a 34⁰ iron and save the players distance for the 9xx forged. I just don't see a lot of people looking for added distance through lowered lofts thinking the mid offering out of the MP line is the play. The vast majority will go 245 or JPX line. Didn't mean to type a book, just a bit perplexed on the trend of iron lofts.

Hi Mark, thanks for the comment. At 80mph you have potential to use 6 iron absolutely and depending on your delivery dynamics and how fsvourable you are loft wise then you may or may not have to option for a 5 iron. Best way would be to get properly fitted for them from somewhere that routinely uses the Swing DNA Shaft Analyser and you'll be able to see from the Launch Monitor what descent angles you are running with the 7 iron... If its steep enough then the fitter will be able to advice accordingly 👍🏻

A superb review, especially with regards to different swing speeds. I would guess based on your metrics I have a modest 7 iron swing speed of 75mph, which probably means the 245 is not the club for me. Maybe a more forgiving and possibly longer club like the Srixon ZX4 m2 would be a better fit. Currently game the JPX 919 forged with recoil F3 shafts. Would love to see how the 245 stands up against its main competitors.
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 8 ай бұрын
If you are concerned about 245 not working at 7 iron level (it should do a 75mph swing speed and maybe even 6 iron) but the ZX4s would be worse sure to the even stronger lofts. They are a bigger head but even with that it would struggle to flight the ball correctly potentially. Also they are very very different irons so normally wouldn't be comparable, full on Game Improvement to Players Distance 👍🏻

Hi Jon, I'm fortunate to not be shaft sensitive so my delivery doesn't change with different shafts, but in general yes you are correct, someone that has a hugely different speed differential and more important a loading differential in transition would require different bend profile shafts. But for this test and all other tests, a massive variance of shaft bend profile doesn't make any difference to the delivered angles. This is also fortunate as media samples come in all different shapes of shaft that do affect nearly all golfers 👍🏻

Hi there, what you are experiencing is common and usual for a high handicap golfer coming down in their handicap. You are finding the true middle of the face more often and when you do, you see a good chunk of distance that you aren't expecting. Changing irons won't actually solve this and in some cases can actually be worse due to the less forgiving nature (generally) of smaller design clubs. Yes absolutely as soon as you break through the barrier of hitting more good than not and you start to realign your carry distances in your head to reflect the new more consistent longer carries, then you could opt for a Players Distance option with slightly more sensible lofts and also has better looks and feel, and arguably a touch more consistency from shots around the middle. I hope this help, thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

Quick question that may have already been addressed. Since the lofts are stronger couldn’t a person just use the 8 iron (34 degree) as their normal 7 iron. Wouldn’t that mitigate the lower spin, peak height and decent angle?
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 6 күн бұрын
Potentially but you'd have to build them half inch extra in the length as the 8 even at the same loft would be swinging at a slower speed due to the length. Also you'd have to ensure the lie calculation was done to ensure dynamic lie is still correct with the shaft length going longer (1 degree more Upright from the extra shaft length) 👍🏻

@@AskGolfNut Hi and thank you for your response. To be honest, for me these questions are not easy to answer. Currently I‘ve started some drills to hit the sweetspot. Because I’ve recognized there are many shots on a 18 hole round, with no good impact. I’m not certain if I would need more forgiveness. I’m also ok with the high of my ball flight. If my current clubs helps me with this? I don’t know. My distance is about 130 meters with a 7 Iron. I guess my answers are not very helpful for you. I’ve thought the 245 are good irons to improve my game, by getting my swing better and they are also forgiving. So I guess I need to do a fitting. The problem ist to find a good and honest fitter here by me in germany.

Mizuno would have told you that the 8-G compared to the 2-7, are constructed differently and are progressing to 1025 in the short clubs, making them have less zing off the face at impact.

They did, that's why I said and explained the above during the first segment. The only real complaints thwy had with the 223’s and 225s were on occasion the distance gap between irons wasn't uniform so I think they have had time to work on the blending of tech with the changing lofts to make it a seemless transition 👍🏻
@rexchan8

@AskGolfNut I've had them for about 6 weeks since I got back from Japan, and they are really like 3 separate types of irons in the long, mid and short. When you are able, have a go at the short ones and you can tell they are very different from the mid and long clubs. I got fitted on them from 4-G in PX6.0 2* flat and coming from the i525s, the noticeable thing is the increased dig with the longer clubs with the greatly reduced bounce. I am considering playing a mix set at times with the Ping and Mizuno as it is rather mushy in my location this time of the year.
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 8 ай бұрын
The bounce numbers are definitely something that people don't look at enough and also generally playing with more bounce isn't a bad thing. Generally the better player has a better control of low point so requires much less help from bounce. That's why ping have done so well over the years, they firmly target their design to the average golfer that does need the help that more bounce gives 👍🏻

Great review again, I’m a female player, pretty decent all though I say it myself. Handicap +2, currently gaming 923 forged as I’m always striving for distance, current 7 iron data: launch 21, ball speed 105, carry 143, peak height 80. have found in longer irons not getting the decent angle, so stopping on summer greens can be an issue. Would you say it’s worth me looking at 243 rather than 245. Thank you
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 7 ай бұрын
Hi Sarah, with the tungsten benefiting launch I'd possibly say weakening the lofts very slightly on the 245 may well bring it into line with the JPX923 High Launch iron but with obvious better aesthetics. The HL will always win due to its size, but the 245 could very well be quite a versatile iron depending on its loft. Just be aware of its spin profile during ant tests and see what they are individually for you. 👍🏻

All solid choices. If you can when settled on the correct fitting with each, rather than block gaining your comparison datasets, swap between irons back and forth to see if there is a consistent winner when rapidly swapping. Very easily golfers can get into a groove with a club in a fitting that doesn't necessarily translate on the course. So swapping between fitted models rapidly will give you chance to see a clear winner if any for you 👍🏻 Good luck on the fitting..... Use the Swing DNA Shaft Analyser if possible (getting fitted for the 245s so that should be used without question) as it'll allow you to dial in shaft really quickly rather than the old school bumper car fitting which wastes your time and energy otherwise 👍🏻 Let me know how you got on 👍🏻

@AskGolfNut

Hmmm that sounds like something not quite right there, a head change shouldn't affect swing speed very much if at all so I am very interested to hear what setup you tested both out in. Efficiency is a measure of ball speed for any given club head speed and main influences on that is Strike and Face to Path numbers. 1.15 is super low and would love to know your swing dynamics and also what your strike point was 👍

Looking at table at 11:00 mark. The 90mph shows an average rollout of 9 yards (total yards minus carry). This seems like a lot considering the descent angle and I didn’t see this sort of roll out showing up on the individual swing data on the shots you did in the video. So what explains the 9 yards of rollout, or an I misunderstanding the data? Thank you
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 8 ай бұрын
Hi Jim, I'd mainly ignore the roll out side fo things as this depends very much on if I hit the Green or just miss by either left to right or slightly long or short, and that is also affected by what distance I set the green to prior to starting the data set. I always look at the peak heights and descent angles to measure stopping power rather than simulated roll out as again depending on the differential of surface between green, fairway and fringe etc, the simulated roll out data has room to vary passed that of the peak height and descent angles 👍🏻

If Tungsten is heavier, more dense then steel, how can it improve heal toe weighting?? Easier to get the ball up though..
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 8 ай бұрын
Because the extra weight has the effect of stabilising the head, a larger longer and deeper tungsten bar resists the twisting force otherwise applied from an off centre hit. Obviously there are limits but it's nice to have the stability in the head 👍🏻

The 245s for quick swing speed players may have potentially too large a distance gaps between irons due to their strong lofts, and then also for very low swing speed players they may find that they don't quite have enough help getting the ball launching to keep carry distance gapping. For medium slow, Medium and medium fast swing speed players the 245s could be an extremely solid choice 👍🏻

Mizuno have always gone down a fairly small bounce angle with other manufacturers filling somewhere in between and some copying Mizuno's bounce ethos. Bounce is much more about securing a more forgiving strike protecting against high strikes (chunks and fat shots) but can also cause problems in other ways so not always is high or low bounce a good thing. Just needs to be fitted correctly to the golfer in question 👍
