New Model Army are a great band from Bradford who formed in 1980 and are still very active, I'm going to see them at Rock City in Nottingham in December which I'm looking forward to. People often think of them as a punk band although my own description would be hugely amplified folk music. In their career, they've been banned by Top of the Pops and refused entry to the USA twice. I've already posted the lyrics which Justin Sullivan, the singer wrote. I appreciate you saying that it was like film music because the lyrics do tell a story. The words are dystopian, they paint a picture of a world on the edge of destruction. The first verse talks about the way that mankind has divorced itself from nature, "These cities are illusions of some triumph over Nature's laws" and this causes our alienation and anger. But because of us, the world is moving toward a dangerous Crisis, as Yeats said, "Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold." In the second verse, Justin sings about the signs of the times, the way that the end can be foreseen, and yet even though many are blinded to the cause and its effect, those who see what is happening cannot escape from what is inevitable, "And watching from outside I wish that I could wash my hands of this, But we are locked together here this bittersweet embrace." Finally, in the last verse, the final hours have arrived, perhaps a nuclear holocaust, and although some of his friends just long to die. But Justin can't accept this, he has the same philosophy as Dylan Thomas, "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" and when all hope is gone, rather than accepting fate, he storms off across the West Yorkshire moors, yelling out to those who have died that they should have listened to him. "Scarred and smiling, dying slow, I'll scream to no one left at all I told you so, I told you so, I told you so . ." which ends in his long, drawn-out cry. Sorry, I've rambled on and said little but I'm trying to say that listening to the words here is essential to a proper appreciation of the band's songs. The audiences get it, many will sing along to all the songs and a concert like this had 29 songs for each of the two nights, so that's no mean feat. The video is from the 30th-anniversary concert of the band at the London Forum in Kentish Town on 4th December, 2010. The band was Justin (acoustic guitar and vocals), Nelson (bass guitar), Michael Dean (drums), Marshall Gill (guitar) and Dean White (keyboards). The song originally appeared on "Thunder and Consolation."

Oh God I love the world... ...and New Model Army! I discovered them for me in 1994 and can't stop listening to them since then. ;) It's really nice to see a reaction to one of my favorite songs (or any NMA Song); the band is so underrated imho. Thank you for this video!

I Love the World when Justin Sullivan is singing, such an underrated talent, both for his song writing and for his vocals.

Lyrics The roll of distant thunder breaks, the afternoon of silence wakes They hurry through from Petergate as if they know this dance In fury blind, I drive at night across the moors, the open roads Beneath the freezing starry skies, racing in some trance These cities are illusions of some triumph over Nature's laws We've seen the iron carcass rust and buildings topple into dust And as the waters rise, it seems we cling to all the rootless things The Christian lies, technology, while spirits scream and sing Oh God I love the world Well I never said I was a clever man but I know enough to understand That the endless leaps and forward plans will someday have to cease You blind yourselves with comfort lies like lightning never strikes you twice And we laugh at your amazed surprise as the Ark begins to sink This temple that is built so well to separate us from ourselves Is a power grown beyond control, a will without a face And watching from outside I wish that I could wash my hands of this But we are locked together here, this bittersweet embrace Oh God I love the world And if one day the final fire explodes across the whitened sky I know you've said you'd rather die and make it over fast With courage from your bravest friends, waiting outside for the end With no bitterness but an innocence that I can't seem to grasp I know somehow I will survive - this fury just to stay alive So drunk with sickness, weak with pain, I can walk the hills one last time Scarred and smiling, dying slow, I'll scream to no one left at all I told you so, I told you so, I told you so . . Oh God I love the world
