Floor Jansen is the best and most versatile female singer of our time, IMHO. She, as an empath, feels and provokes any emotion she chooses and easily imparts that onto anyone who hears and listens. She has brought tears to my eyes many, many times. Not because I feel a personal connection to the lyrics (sometimes) but simply because of her voice and performance. I’ve never experienced that with any other artist without having the lyrics remind me of something I went through personally in my life. She’s unmatched. 💯

Just a note, that performance of "Shallow" by Floor Jansen, even Lady Gaga said it was awesome. I don't think pop singers are necessarily inferior, their musical style don't force them to push as much as in metal/rock. And singers like Tarja, Floor and Simone, they were also trained in classical style. They can nail operas easily. It's on another level for sure.
@Nikioko2 жыл бұрын
Really? Didn't know that Lady Gaga even noticed it. But Floor's version was better for sure. Lady Gaga is a great musician when it comes to composition and the piano, but Floor for sure is the better singer. And I very much doubt that Tarja, Floor and Simone can nail operas easily. Most likely of them Tarja. But to be a great opera singer, it takes a lot more. You have to specialize in this genre early and dedicate your whole life to it.
@bertjones30102 жыл бұрын
Training be it classical or other wise, the important thing isn't the genre as much a learning how to master your instrument. That's the most impressive thing about Floor. Haley Reinhart, Diana Ankudinova both had great control. But they are all different genres so you can't really compare their music with each other.
@MiereTeixeira2 жыл бұрын
This. Being a former singer myself I can confirm your intuition. One can notice this from how Jansen project her voice, releasing only the necessary amount of air to reach those notes, with enough room for a longer vibrato if needed. Gaga is not bad at all. An interesting contender would be Tati Schmyuck of Jinjer not just for the shock factor of her awesome growls but for the unique sound of her clean voice as well.

Even when she goes up high her voice has weight to it so it is never piercing. I can listen to her all day because she has such great pitch control and power that is never fatiguing to hear. Sure there are singers like Whitney and Mariah that have more range but they can get hard on the ears and I listen to music for enjoyment rather than a vocal exercise. They (mostly) come from very different musical traditions. "Pop" singers' cultural antecedents are from black American gospel singing and therefore African styles of music. "Metal" singers come (mostly) from European 12-tone music with all the scales, modes, etc. that come with that. The African traditions often have more than just 12 notes in their scales. Then again, some of them have only 5. This is why blues, rock, "soul" and pop are so filled with pentatonics and blue notes. They are callbacks to musical traditions from Africa adapted to the instrumentation of the European tradition. That's sort of the "schoolboy" explanation/understanding of the two styles. Of course that's a generalization and the has been and continues to be overlap, but that seems (to me, at least) to be the basic difference. (And don't let's even get started on the rhythmic aspects of the two traditions...) Greatest metal vocalist: Rob Halford. (Or Geoff Tate?) Greatest pop vocalist: Steve Perry. (Or maybe Darryl Hall?)

Ok Katie v Adel... Katie has a good voice, but Adel is the clear winner, she has an absolutely phenomenal voice that woman, and it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, in a good way! For Metal singers Amy Lee is good, but that Floors lady.... FAAAARRRK she's truly amazing with her voice range.

Floor Jansen, Simone Simons and Fabienne Erni (Eluveitie) are by far my favourite female vocalsts. Floor is a beast and maybe the best female singer in Metal but sometimes it's not technique but pure feeling. Simone and Fabienne has tons of this, they got me so many times in tears because of the pure feeling they put in their vocals and chills down the spine. And Floor has these emotions on me too. So for me they are all three in the same league!

Yeah, Floor Jansen and Tarja Turunen are absolutely mind-blowingly good singers, but can we all just take a moment to appreciate Noora Louhimo of Battle Beast? She's just an absolute powerhouse of a vocalist with lots of versatility, range, and *power*. For example, listen to her just unleash in "Bastard Son of Odin" with her band, Battle Beast, or "Eden" with the same band. As for pop vocalists, while I'm not really into pop at all, I do have to pay my respects to both Lady Gaga and Adele for their own amazing skills as vocalists, even if I'm not the biggest fan of their music.

Only metal singer that's missing, if this video is the one I think it is, is Brittney Slayes from Unleash the Archers. She is the Queen of traditional power metal, having a voice like Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. Plus, Brittney does sing opera, having sung Brindisi with the singer from Lords of the Trident, on a live-stream.

I'd choose Floor Jansen and Tatiana Shmailyuk. Just because i absolutely love their voices and performing. A gig with those two, and i could like die happy. (And yes, Floor _is_ still with Nightwish, but we have a silly little problem here with gigs nowadays. You might have even heard of it - it's a kinda [sorry,no magic but] pandemia)

There are so many female metal singers that are top notch: Melissa Ferlaak, Diane van Giersbergen, Nicoletta Rosellini, Lori Lewis, Clementine Delauny...they outperform every non-metal singer out there. I respectfully suggest you check bands such as Neopera, Imperial Ages, Imperia.

My favorite female singer would be Simone Simons. Someone like Floor Jansen, for example, is technically better, and I love her voice, but Simone's hits different for me. Also adding Angela Gossow, as not only my favorite female harsh vocalist, but one of my favorite vocalists, as a whole!

Pop singers from the 80s are some of the most talented. Whitney Houston, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Des‘ree, Toni Braxton, A lot of the RnB singers from the 80s on up are some of the most talented. I’d even say the 60s but I can’t account for that since I don’t tend to listen to most 60s music unless I’m in the shower singing along Lmao
@orlock202 жыл бұрын
Metal also had a host of top male metal singers at that time too. Pop singers have fallen off because labels have used Auto-Tune to find younger singers that can dance and model but haven't taken singing lessons.
@marcthedashergd63212 жыл бұрын
@@orlock20 yeah there are great metal singers in the 80s like Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Ozzy Ozbourne, James Hetfield (even before he changed his style later), and probably Lemmy Kilmeister (99% chance I messed up his name). However, unlike modern pop which has now fallen off in terms of talent because of autotune, modern metal still has great vocalists who can do more than just screaming.
@beldin29872 жыл бұрын
I think its more that the pop songs from that time were better, at least for me. Best example is Mariah Carey, loved her 90s stuff where she did great ballads thats showed what she can, and then in the 2000s she started to do mostly this lame hip-pop stuff where you don't even really noticed anymore what she is capable of. The same problem i have for example now with Ariana Grande, i have seen her doing waaaay better in Late Night Shows than what she does in most of her songs.
@arturiuspendragon68492 жыл бұрын
@@marcthedashergd6321 Though I like his music a lot, I never thought of Ozzy as a great singer. Definitely not Hetfield. For some truly amazing singers from that period, definitely have to throw in Geoff Tate, Sebastian Bach and Miljenko Matijevic. Axl Rose was an incredible talent, but damn he was a PIA. Oh yeah, it would be blasphemy not to mention one of the greatest ever, Ronnie James Dio. RIP.
@marcthedashergd63212 жыл бұрын
@@arturiuspendragon6849 I understand why you don’t think Ozzy or James are some of the greatest. But I am so sorry that I forgot about Ronnie. He is actually one of if not the greatest singer of all time.

Несправедливое сравнение, металлисты всегда сильнее музыкально и вокально владеют большими приёмами. На то они и металлисты чтоб вышибать двери ногой, а не элегантно дёргать за дверную ручку.

Martina, Lori, Thomas, Rosalie - Therion have had lots of great singers on board with them over the years. They seem to get overshadowed a bit by Nightwish, Within Temptation, After Forever, and Epica, but it's a subgenre loaded with great vocalists!

I don't really think this is an appropriate comparison, as there's clearly two different kinds of vocal training at work. All the "metal singers" have clearly trained in opera, which is different but not better. As has been pointed out, if we're talking technical skill and range, some pop singers reign supreme. The thing that these metal singers AKA opera singers have on their side is volume. And you can sing to a large theater without a microphone, that's a loud ass s***. In the end, isn't that one is better than the other, it's that they are different in many ways, and it's not really fair to either side to compare them against each other.

All-time metal would be Ozzy. :) Screw technical perfection, I like uniqueness. For female singers, I'd say Tati from Jinjer. As for pop, prolly someone from the 80's, but from more contemporary music, Katy Perry's not bad at all. Or Madonna. She's from the 80's and still pretty relevant.
