I built one from Luke's video but I had no luck powering it with an old 12v phone charger. Thanks for sharing your version.
@TheDCCGuy4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron-it should work with a 12VDC power supply as long as it is still good. Those old chargers can fail. I like the freedom of using the 9VDC battery myself so skipped the wall wart approach but it should be a viable option using Luke’s wiring diagram. However I don’t like the idea of using the rocker type switch as it leaves the unit powered unless you find a switch that is spring loaded and returns to the off position by itself.

Thanks Larry. I built Luke's Applicator, and it works a treat. However, I like the way you have made a low profile version. Well done. I'll look forward to part two. I think I may convert mine!

Hi Larry, came over from the "angry space soldier" part of the modeling hobby. I love this video and I'm going to post it at a couple of my usual haunts on the internet. We dont do as much big pieces as you so buying a static grassdevice isn't really a good choice but building one is a great option. We do a lot of bases for out models, 3inch to 1.5 inch typically, and this static generating tool could offer us a LOT of choices. Thanks!

Thanks for this Larry just came at the right time made a fly swat one at Christmas, but need something with a bit more power but needed a bit more info on the generator. keep up the good work from Matt over the pond.

Be careful buying a generator on eBay as they come in many versions, some with multiple output wires and some with only one output wire. To keep it simple I found one with 2 wires in and 2 wires out.

Just a little tip for anyone making one following this. That screen could be tacked in place in just a few seconds with CA glue and zipkicker. Then you can go ahead and put the epoxy around for a more durable hold. I'd also get at least two extra lids for progressively bigger screens. With one of these applicators one size fits all is not best. The different length static grasses will work better or worse with larger or smaller screen sizes. Basically the smaller holes for shorter grasses and bigger holes for longer grasses.

Thank you for this! I built a flyswatter version, but I found that the epoxy I used didn't stick the mesh to the lid. I'll have to try JB weld.

Also make sure to sand the plastic in advance to give the glue something to stick to.

Larry what is your opinion on the Woodland Scenics Static King or the Static Grass Starter Kit. And what size Static Grass 12 MM 7 MM 4 MM or 2 MM is the best for over all Thanks Tom

Thanks Larry, enjoy your videos. They’re always interesting and informative. I’ve been thinking about this video and wondering if you’d considered using a step up power booster to raise the voltage to 12 volts. Would this increase the output voltage to the complete 20k? I’m going to give a try when I build mine. I’m just waiting for the supplies to build it. Thanks again for your great videos!!!
@TheDCCGuy4 жыл бұрын
I do have one of the little voltage booster circuit boards a d may give that a try. However you can’t get something for nothing and a boost i voltage will mean a corresponding drop in amperage, don’t know whether it is the voltage or amperage that matters most in this case but worth a test. I was looking back at the results with the 9VDC and the third configuration was so good I may not fiddle with things until I get my hands on some 12 mm grass to test with.

Larry, Do you still notify interested folks on their emails to remind them of your latest videos? I used to get them and it was a very useful reminder. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of your videos that I have had a chance to watch. Being a novice, it would be helpful for more DCC wiring videos too.

Philip-KZbin stopped sending out emails back in August 2020, believe me I and everyone I know liked getting them but they decided otherwise. However if you have you have the preferences in KZbin and on your mobile devices set to receive popups and push messages they still do those. Also on your subscriptions list there will be little blue circles when a new video is posted. And on your KZbin Home page there usually is a special listing section for new videos from channels you subscribe to.

Yes, I announced some time ago that it would only remain up until it was time to renew the hosting agreement and that happened in January. It was just too expensive to justify and it took too much time and money to keep all the security updated. I got hacked a couple years ago and that alone cost me $1000 just to get it fixed.

The output is not linear with input... 20kv/12vdc is not equivalent to 15kv/9vdc... but unless you actually measure it, you won't really know. Regardless, you will have less output than max kv. I use those modules and they work very well in the flockinator I make.
@TheDCCGuy4 жыл бұрын
I figured that might be the case although it should not be a significant drop, but since my voltmeter max’s out at 10K I have no way to check it. Have you seen a typical response curve for these devices?

Watch the whole series on these applicators. I show a further modification that puts the “hot” plate at the back of the container instead of on the screen so you can’t inadvertently touch it and get a shock.

I’m not going to start messing around with getting a static grass applicator that a major manufacturer hadn’t made. I have a disability that makes this a slightly dangerous thing for me to do!!
