I saw a video of an orangutan mum in a rehabilitation center. The mum did'n know what to do, especially how to nurse. The baby had to be taken away. Then someone had an idea: there was an employee (human) who was nursing her baby. So, as a last resort they decided to show the orangutan what to do. The orangutan watched attentively - and learned!

She doesn’t seem to know what to do?! She’s very curious and gentle, although I’m not understanding the way she keeps patting the baby like she’s trying to burp it. I so hope that the caretakers are providing support and guidance to Jingga, and supplementing milk for her baby if she isn’t nursing enough. Thank you to the person who posted about the other video showing that Jingga was nursing and caring for her baby; that was a huge relief🥹💕. And many thanks to all of the wonderful people who help care for and keep this extraordinary species alive and thriving. You are all heroes ♥️🥰♥️👍!

"Trying" being the operative word here. I don't blame Jingga. Her situation hasn't prepared her for motherhood. As others have stated, hopefully we just aren't getting to see where the baby is feeding or hopefully the human caretakers are doing it. I've seen enough Orang videos to know the baby should be clinging close to mom for warmth and suckling and from what we've seen this poor newborn isn't getting that. If these shadows remain unchanged, I see an empty patch of straw where the baby orang once sat.

Seems many people are concerned about the mom and new baby. Please contact Blackpool directly with your concerns. And refrain from criticizing mother ape from not behaving properly … this is in part a learned behavior in natural surroundings. There may be good reason for concern yet they can only be addressed by zoo caretakers.

@MegUSN52 Жыл бұрын
It appears that the infant is either getting Jingga's milk or she's allowing the staff to feed it. Jingga is shaking/patting the baby to offer comfort/soothing just has human mothers do and some other primates. I'm assuming that Jingga is also allowing the baby to latch on to her when she wants and this is just not being shown to us viewers in these videos. If not, is the staff going to need to intervene before it's too late and hand rear the baby until Jingga can adequately provide motherly care? People should not judge Jingga too harshly. She's a new mom and it's not like she has a manual telling her how to be a mother. Primates learn mothering skills from their own mothers and other females in the troop. First time human mothers struggle too, but at least we have books, videos, midwives, pediatricians to consult. Blackpool Zoo should have been working with Jingga to build trust while Jingga was pregnant. They should have also been assisting her to teach her how to be an orangutan mother as other zoos do with first time primate moms. If they have been doing this then that hasn't been shown to us any uploaded videos. Some primates will hand over their babies to their human caretakers for feeding and helping to raise their infants depending on how much they trust their caretakers.

Could it be that there’s no milk coming from mum ? therefore there’s no incentive for the baby to persist in it’s attempts to nurse. Mother Nature does a good job of priming newborns to seek out nourishment, but if there’s nothing there except maybe a small amount of colostrum there’s no ‘reward’. The little guy seems to have a big round swollen belly too, but it’s really hard to get a good look at him, so I could be wrong. 🤞
