Baby Jarang is having a sleep while mother Jingga is getting some food. She knows she can safely leave him because they are the only two Orangutans in the enclosure. This wouldn't happen in the wild due to predators.
Filmed in February 2024 Baby Jarang has put weight on since my last visit and seems stronger and more alert. Jingga's methods are still unconventional and she still shows inexperience but she is caring for baby and feeding him well.
The newborn baby is a critically endangered bornean orangutan born to first time Orangutan mother Jingga
this video was recorded in February 2024
KZbin sensation Jingga has had social media fame before when a video featuring her went viral back in 2015 - viral video - monkey sees a magic trick
The video was filmed at her in her previous home Barcelona Zoo in Spain
Jingga move to her new home Blackpool Zoo in 2017 to join her new Blackpool Orangutan family as part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP)
14 year old Jingga was born in Barcelona in 2009 to mother Jawi and Father Karl
Now Jingga is settled at Blackpool zoo and has given birth for the first time to the tiny baby boy orangutan named Jarang
The father of the newborn baby orangutan is 13 year old Kawan who has recently moved to Blackpool Zoo in 2022 from Apenheul Zoo in the Netherlands and was an instant hit with the resident female orangutans Cherie Summer and Jingga
He came to the zoo as part of the European Endangered Species program after his much loved predecessor Ramon was moved to a new group in Germany where he has just become a new father himself
Kawan was specially selected by experts to join the female group at Blackpool Zoo and has settled into his new role as alpha male orangutan very well
We have recently added Blackpool Zoo to our list of zoos that we will be frequently visiting to film the apes, so watch out for more footage of this fantastic zoo. Blackpool has Gorillas and Bornean Orangutans and we were really impressed with both areas.
There are currently 5 Bornean Orangutans in one family group at Blackpool Zoo consisting of adult females Cherie Summer and Jingga
Alpha Male Kawan and the new male baby orangutan Jarang

With a human baby they would possibly consider him a failure to thrive baby unless he has a medical condition we all don’t know about. I haven’t seen much improvement in Jarang. What I find quite disturbing is that this zoo refuses help from outside help. Nothing is wrong from getting help from outside experts. I feel just totally bad for the Jarang. Poor baby has no clue that his life could be so much more. Jinga is doing the best she can. Prayers for momma and baby. Makes me sad💔😥

How exactly do you know 100% that Blackpool Zoo is refusing help from outside experts? That is impossible. Zoos have to have experience with primates to be able to have them in their care. There is a process that they have to go through. You see very short clips into Jingga and Jarang's lives, which is only what Ape Tracker shares with us viewers. You have no idea what happens in their lives in 24 hours in this zoo. As Ape Tracker has stated numerous times, the zoo staff closely monitors Jingga and Jarang. Since Blackpool Zoo has not made official statements concerning Jingga and Jarang, we are all just speculating.

This is both sad & precious. Precious in the way that Jingga does really love that baby but she just doesn't know how to properly take care of him, but she definitely does try. I say sad because it's sad to see that baby like that. I don't think it's just an issue with her being an inexperienced mother & him being developmentally behind. I think that little Jarang has something wrong with him because he should at least be trying to move around or something. He doesn't do any of that & I've noticed he keeps his fists closed most of the time. Hopefully someone will "wake up" and look into this more so they can help both mommy & baby.

@@ApeTracker1answer the darn question
@JennyMiller-rt4ue
@JennyMiller-rt4ue 4 ай бұрын
I asked the zoo. They didn’t answer my questions: Why is on his back all the time…etc the things we all wonder, but they say that he has been examined by veterinarians and he IS healthy. The wording (which was deliberately vague, I feel) implied that he is just slower than other orang babies. They also said that I shouldn’t expect him to develop as a human baby does. I replied. I said that I am comparing him to other baby orangutan in other zoos at his age and sent them some photos. No response. They stonewall public interest. The zoo is tight-lipped. Either they don’t know what to do, or, they know now that they miscalculated and the outcome is what we have here. Zoos all over the world work so hard when the mother/baby bond is off. And come up with super creative solutions. Why doesn’t Blackpool? That said, they haven’t had a baby in 20 years, so maybe, they are out of touch or their staff are too inexperienced. Jingga seems disinterested.

I’m surprised they even answered you. I am in Canada, but I tried to find the organization that overseas and inspects zoos with apes in the UK. I had no luck. It’s very confusing as to what body would be in charge of overseeing endangered ape care at a private zoo. I wanted to send a letter to whatever that organization is to see if they are aware that a endangered species infant appears to not be getting proper care, or if it is proper care and the zoo has had inspections, then to verify that. If someone can find the right place to send an inquiry, I don’t mind writing it, but I just don’t know who to contact. Thank you for telling us what they have said so far. Maybe the media in England could do a story on Jinga and Jarang and ask questions? Shed a little bit of a spotlight on the zoo and this situation?

I cannot claim to know the developmental milestones of orangutan babies, but I would imagine that this infant hasn’t been given the opportunity to build the muscles in his body due to the fact that his mother has never carried him all day and night ventrally as orangutan mothers usually do. Orangutan infants usually begin clinging to their mothers hair to some degree from birth, and the muscles in their bodies strengthen day by day from doing so 24/7. There is no doubt that this infant has missed out on normal muscle development due to his circumstances. I can’t say that he does, or does not, have a physical condition, but I believe he is simply suffering from delayed muscle development. Hopefully he will become more inclined to move himself about in the near future as he becomes more curious with age. More often than not, individuals with limitations figure out ways to work around their limitations, so I don’t see why he would be any different. Once he starts trying to move about, it will aid in strengthening his muscles.

The only halfway decent explanation is that he has something terminal or a condition that can not be treated surgically, and they are just waiting for him to pass. Again, the fact he is STILL on display to the public is beyond me. An 8 month old orangutan should have begun climbing and moving around independently. The enlargement in the groin looks to be a hydrocele.

I think it's interesting that so many people automatically ASSUME what the Zoo is doing or not doing based on the small snippets of time on these videos. 🤔 I do hope they are treating his "man parts" tho bcuz that doesn't look normal. Yes, she shouldn't be putting him down at all, And I worry that he's cold, lying there on his back outside, without his mother's body warmth. He doesn't act like he's uncomfortable though, and presumably would cry if he's really cold. He is acting more alert and using his muscles more, but is still very small and underdeveloped for 8 months. Presumably the zoo knows more about what's going on with him than they're telling. it's a dilemma because taking him away from his mother would upset her terribly and, if he really is sick in some way, would probably just make his condition worse, whatever it is. Separating mothers and infants is only done as an absolute last resort, when the mother is failing to feed it, to keep it from starving to death. That clearly isn't an issue here.

That is an indicator of several severe health issues. Combine that with his hands constantly in fists or seldom straight when open, at 7 months can't even sit up without help, and a host of other issues. It all equals more than even the most experienced mother can handle. Jinnga loves her little baby but sadly is helpless to do anything to help. It is not an inexpeiamced parenting issue. If Jinnga was human she wouls be lovked in an apartment, her fridge filled with food and left to deal with a special needs baby with zero help or the ability to get/ask for any. Would you blame her in that situation?. Jinnga is just as much a victim as Jarrang. She gave birth to a baby woth something severly wrong and it looks like the zoo is doing nothing. That leads me to belive Jarrang has an untrearable condition. It looks like; from this video, she is given up. This is the first time she truly looks sad when being near him. For all those who want to leave comments saying I'm wrong - please warch all the other videos from an unbiased state without applying human emotions or conditions. @Axalotal I've always had a tender heart with animals. I've had horses, dogs and cats all my life. I'm just learning about primates. I love the orangutans the best. I just wish we could get some kind of response from the zookeepers. When one of my pets including my horses (I had four) showed some sign that something might have been wrong, I would watch them for a day or two, try to nurse them myself unless it was an emergency situation, and if they weren't improving I would bring them to the vet or for the horses, call the equine vet to check them. Most cases, I did the right thing by having the vet check them. I would rather be safe than sorry. With Jarang and Jingga, this situation has been going on since birth so I am very concerned. I'm from New Orleans, so I don't even know where Blackpool zoo is.

Poor baby. He needs some medical attention. As protected and all the concern showed towards the orangutans I don’t understand how this is going on. I wish some how baby would get some medical help.

This may sound terrible, but it is possible the baby is not going to survive, so they are allowing her to learn how to be a mother for as long as baby lives. THIS IS JUST A MAYBE

I couldn’t watch to the end. That dear little baby needs some sort of help, either an intervention if Mum is not up to scratch or a good looking over by a vet.

I think we all need to calm down… Yes, the situation is not ideal, but the zoo seem to be doing their best, monitoring closely etc. Jarrang does seem to be developmentally delayed, as are many human babies 😢 but we do not remove them from their Mum, we watch, wait, and give what help we can, maybe Jarrang will be a simple soul all his life, there is no magic wand to wave I’m afraid.

There's something really off with Jarang. An Orangutan baby his age wouldn't a) Look that small and b) Wouldn't just lie around on his back all the time. Orangutan babies are curious and active creatures. There's nothing of the kind here.
