Despite the massive amount of collective news coverage, each crime incident receives a negligent amount of coverage that is not conducive to empathy. This leads to the normalisation of violence and criminal activity in our modern society. This talk explores how we become desensitized to violent crime, specifically gun violence and mass shootings, and how it is detrimental towards the bigger picture. Emmy is a 16 year old student studying at the International School of Bangkok. Her passions include the arts, biology, and human rights and her ambition is to give back to her community. In her free time, she enjoys reading, drawing, and spending quality time with her family and friends. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

We are in an era where bad news are worth more money than good news. So sad. The solution is to distance ourselves from media and create a real life social media with technology. I'm not sure if I want to bring a new person to this world.

I mean, technically, historically in the span of human existence, being exposed to death and violence was a lot more common. We’ve really only started to change the mindset of violence after a couple revolutions, which, ironically, a lot was led with violence. Humans have always been violent creatures. It’s going to take a very long time to change human nature from generations and generations of violence.

Ok but why should there be societal empathy. Tradegy happens all the time and thinking about all of it would be a bad for your mental health. People shouldnt have to think about tradegy of your friend they didnt know them its a pointless matter because the heat death of the universe shows we should just enjoy our lives.

This is the exact evolutionary reason that desensitization came about in the first place. We would not get desensitized to things if it wasn't a useful evolutionary trait.

People need to understand not everything can be PREEMPTIVELY stopped. Mental health is not the only problem. Some men simply want to watch the world burn. And you deal with them accordingly
