Right, but in the clip you show at 0:50, the player in the offside position does not interfere with another player (i.e. the goalkeeper), neither by preventing the goalkeeper from playing the ball, nor by blocking the goalkeeper's line of sight to the ball, nor by challenging the goalkeeper for the ball, nor by impacting the ability of the goalkeeper to play the ball. Yet, you say this should be called offside. Additionally, the clip at 1:00, you say is an offside offense because the player in an offside position "distracts" the goalkeeper, yet the language about distracting an opponent is no longer part of the offside law.

I think you are probably right about the clip at 1:00. That was a controversial call and not the best example of off-the-ball interference. I believe the clip at 0:50 should be offside though; the player's run is towards the ball, and he is close enough to potentially make contact with it. I would consider that "interfering with play".

What I never understood is that the offside rule is applied to rebounds and deflections but not when the defender accidentally heads the ball to an offside player in a 50/50 challenge. In both circumstances there is no intention yet in the latter the goal stands.

If you are referring to a rebound following a goalkeeper's save, it would depend on the player's position as the shot was being taken. Offside called if he was ahead of the ball and 2nd last defender when his teammate was taking the original shot. Otherwise, not offside (like the clip at 2:36).

I don't understand if the ball is deflected from an opponent to the player in the offside position, it is called off side but if the offside player intercepts the goal from the opponent(the defender) (@2:15 , 2:25) and scores a goal is not called offside. Explain?

The main difference here is intention! If the player makes an intentional, controlled contact with the ball it will be considered his/her action that determines the (lack of) offside call. But in the case of a deflection, it is the teammate's pass that is intentional (not the deflection), and since it is the teammate's action, offside is called. Hope this helps!

Deflection is just a mistake when the ball intered into the net we count the goal and we don't say its unintentionally... so why for offside deflection we make the rule as offside. IF the offensive player was in an offside position when the ball was originally kicked, then that player is still in an offside position. If he moves into an offside position after the ball has been kicked and then deflected then he is NOT offside. Hope that helps.

I disagree. While you are right that "measuring" intention is difficult, allowing all deflections to negate offside could introduce a lot of problems that defeat the entire purpose of the rule.

Not sure if you plan to do a follow up on this, but it seems that your LAST observation is contradictory to what FIFA is asking the referees do call now... In other words, if a defender is the one making the last contact deliberately, the attacking player (even though he was offside at the moment of the pass by his teammate) should not be considered offside... Thus, deflections (not deliberate) off of an opposing player are still subject to offside (as seen in the clip @ 2:26). An exception is a rebound following a goalkeeper's save. It will be subject to offside referring to the original shot, although it is deliberate and technically not a deflection.

Reason it's confusing. You say, "this goal is offside. The ball is played with the player in front of the defender." When you make your statement, the guy in the red who has the ball (I think his # is 2) has four . . maybe five defenders (blue guys) plus the goalie in front of him. So I think with that guy who has the ball and takes the shot, he's not offside. The second guy, I take that comment back about him being offside. I paused it and at the time he receives / deflects the ball there are two blue guys behind him (one blue and the goalie). That would mean he wouldn't be offside either. Bear with me. I'm just learning this stuff and when you told me that he (not sure which guy) was offside my brain exploded because I just learned the rule from another video. :D If you would try and dumb it down some more for me as to why there was an offside, I'd appreciate it. :)

Second guy is offside because of his position as the first "shot" is taken, aka his position when his teammate last touched the ball.
