New Old School MMORPG - Project Gorgon
Project Gorgon is an MMORPG that recently came to Steam early access in March 2018, Initially I wasn't gonna cover this game due to being a bit put off by the graphics but after trying it out of my livestream I was presently surprised and enjoyed it more than I expected.

--Project Gorgon Description--
GO ON AN ADVENTURE
Project: Gorgon is a 3D fantasy MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online role-playing game) featuring an immersive experience that allows the player to forge their own path through exploration and discovery. We don't guide you through a world on rails, and as a result, there are many hidden secrets awaiting discovery. Project: Gorgon also features an ambitious skill-based leveling system that bucks the current trend of pre-determined classes, allowing the player to combine skills in order to create a truly unique playing experience.
AN IMMERSIVE WORLD
When you play Project: Gorgon, we want you to feel as if you’re immersed in a whole new virtual world. Rather than trying to manage this with just graphics and excessive backstory, we’ve designed the game with dozens of gameplay features that make you feel like you’re really there interacting with the world, such as:
Each non-player (NPC) you meet has their own goals and interest, and reward players that choose to be their friend.
You can drop items on the ground, and other players can pick them up. What’s so great about that? Imagine laying down a trail of literal (virtual) breadcrumbs to guide your friends (or lure your enemies) into the woods.
Shopkeepers keep inventory, so you can buy items that other players have sold to them. Want to help out new players? Sell your cast-off items to the shopkeeper in the new player zone and watch the new players go to town.
If you are on fire, you can jump into a lake to put it out. This type of mechanic can have a subtle effect on your strategies, especially when you are fighting a fire mage!
You can inscribe messages onto items, write books, and even leave notes for other players. Make your name as an in-game poet, or pronounce your greatness to the world!
UNIQUE EXPERIENCES
In Project: Gorgon you kill monsters - a lot of them - and you take their loot. In order to keep the experience fun and interesting, we’ve developed unique combat experiences to keep the fights feeling fresh. The loot is randomly generated, monsters have unique abilities, and dungeons have puzzles, traps, and terrifying bosses! The combat skills are entirely free-form. You can learn as many combat skills as you want, and use any two of them at the same time to create your own personal “class.” Project: Gorgon features dozens to choose from, including:
Battle Chemistry: Create huge explosions, inject yourself with mysterious mutagens or program a pet golem!
Unarmed Combat: Grapple and control enemies using a situational-aware combo system that varies based on where you are and what day it is.
Animal Handling: Tame animals and train them to become ferocious fighters. Then breed your best and sell their offspring to other players.
Necromancy: Seek out corpses and graveyards to raise an undead army. No graveyard around? Well, there are always the corpses of your friends.
Cow: Got turned into a cow by that boss? That sucks. But learn some kicks and how to stampede, and you'll be right back out there kicking grass in no time!
That’s just a few! There’s also Sword Fighting, Combat Psychology, Staff Fighting, Sigil Scripting, Mentalism, and more.

you should do a video of playing runescape then try out old school runescape. old school has a one click combat system like the game he showed, runescape though has a more advanced combat system that's personally my favorite of the two. I tried rise of the fallen, its fun but old school runescape is more my thing if I wanted to play a game that reminds me of the old days.

Everquest was my first true video game love affair. There was just so much space to explore. You could get so far off the beaten trail that the thought "Am I the first person to step EXACTLY here?" crossed my mind many times. I tried picking it back up but the magic is just gone for me. Always looking for that "virgin" MMO experience where no one knows anything and you are just as likely to figure it out as anyone else... Someday I'll find that game again.

@@omanafire If not this one, then maybe Pantheon. I know exactly what you mean about losing yourself in the world and wondering if you were the first to ever step foot in this or that particular place. And I'm going to try this one, actually heard about it on a Pantheon video, but Pantheon is where the bulk of my hope lies. Brad McQuaid, who gave us EQ, is overseeing the development, a crowdfunded and community driven mmo that could redefine the genre, bringing in whole new game mechanics while trying to maintain as much of the feel of oldschool mmorpgs as possible. The whole perception system looks incredibly immersive and I can't wait to see how the different perception paths allow parties to find different quest lines and lore, together. And each job having specific abilities to interact with the environment, and the whole climate system, it's pretty interesting stuff.

For the reasons you listed, I've been re-visiting Everquest I again. I normally play ESO and GW2, but got bored and heard EQ was celebrating their 19th anniversary, so dropped it. The game is free, only 10G download, and has ended up being a ton of fun. I originally played it from 1999-2003, and playing again has been a serious nostalgia fest! They have added some leveling help compared to how it used to be, but I've just ignored it and started as a lowly level 1, exploring, discovering, and generally running around. It is a MASSIVE world, and low level zones are largely un-populated, but I have taken advantage of the Plane of Knowledge hub for transports, and there are still lots of high level players hanging around there, and usually 50-100 players in beginner chat channel. It's been well worth the visit, and I'm glued to the screen each evening in nostalgic bliss :D

This popped up on my recc since i watch a lot of random mmorpg videos, including yours, and me and a friend actually just downloaded the game a few days ago(i tried in alpha as a solo) and its his first look at the game. It's actually been a ton of fun. they have implemented a lot of new systems to make the gameplay a bit smoother, including hints for quests etc, as well as guild/friend/party systems, and an active and helpful/talkative community. there may not be TONS of people playing the game, but it just has the 1 server, so you can see whoever is on.

Was waiting for this one. Really disappointed with how your viewers were bashing the game during the stream, even though you were having a lot of fun. But apparently people nowadays would rather look at something pretty instead of actually having fun. Either way, I hope the game at least sees a good amount of niche success. The devs deserve it, even just for pointing out how creatively bankrupt and boring modern MMOs are.
@IkarosTypeAlpha
@IkarosTypeAlpha 6 жыл бұрын
those comments show why games like this aren't usually pursued by bigger devs. Too much of a money/time sink for a niche audience. It's such a shame because MMOs nowadays are the definition of boring and generic, but I guess being unique is too much for some.

you should play runescape, the quests are like this game where there isn't anyone holding your hand, but has a huge community so if u want just google the quest name and there is a wiki that will help you, or a fan video on youtube guiding you through, the graphics are nice, but totally open world, been around for a long time but very big community and nice combat system defenitly will keep you ingaged.

The problem with modern MMOs is that they're either Korean and feature P2W aspects, or they wont move on from the old school mechanics. Old school MMOs had the right feel, but they fail now because the mechanics are old and boring. Tab-target and pressing 1,2,3,4, etc on a rotation isn't a challenge and hasn't been for nearly a decade. BDO was meant to be a game-changer and it would have been if the Korean developers sold the Western release and all of its assets to a Western company that could handle it. It had innovative, refreshing and challenging combat(for an MMO. Vindictus was it's closest match, but that game has been dead for years due to P2W) while looking beautiful and being in-depth with little hand-holding. Honestly, when it came down to getting invested into the economy of that game, it was ridiculously complicated and annoying. But rewarding. The only faults that game had were not finding a better balance between PvP and PvE(favoring the former) and not having rich, meaningful story for people that care for that sort of thing. As far as the game itself is concerned. The Korean company is still in control of it, so that's why it failed so horribly for Western audiences. And to compensate for the loss of players, they added more P2W conveniences when doing away with that would have saved it or put it in a better place. But unfortunately, P2W works in S. Korea and China and they don't seem to care that it fails in the West.

The rabbit hole of wanting to do something then going oh i need to descale fish for potions ok, may aswell cook the fish, oh i wanna sell gems, i need a stall to sell to other players if i want to afk, ok need to level industry, to level industry i need to level what ever skills are needed to do the work , ended up fishing for 5 hours descaleing fish then making 10k in gold, the inn keeper becoming mg best friend from feeding him 500 fried fish and getting ready to go farm more spider eggs. Everyones journey in this world will be diffrent its not just quest grinding even if this is part of it, you really feel part of the world

LOL at the "too hard" part. The opposite. I'm a competitive arena shooter player and I specifically play competitive and challenging games. These games have the illusion of difficulty far too often and I see right through it. Just because it took you a year to kill a rabbit doesn't mean it was "hard". My favorite MMO are hardcore sandbox MMO and I really enjoy true challenge like what is presented in games like Dark Souls. I do not appreciate when games try to sell themselves on challenge and complexity when its more the fact they are emulating older outdated systems that made the core gameplay awkward and cumbersome. This one has a lot of that too "project gorgon" but it also seems to be focusing on its strengths of having lots of weird skills that require a lot of knowledge to use properly possibly. If I approached this game like a 3d pen and paper, maybe it will be fun.

Nothing can replace the fun, adventurous feel and cooperative feel I got back in the early days of both games. Or maybe there is in this game. I just learned about it today and it's got my attention. Amen, Peon! THIS is exactly why some of us old-school MMO players have never been able to find a good home after playing Star Wars Galaxies (and other similar old titles). The original SWG game was about living in the Star Wars universe and it did not hold your hand. The people in those games made up most of the "content" and it was richer than any hand-holding, "story-driven" single-player experienced disguised as an MMO we have today. MMO designers have lost sight of the original goals of putting us in a living world and have instead been creating games that are virtual Disneylands.

Another old school style game you might be interested in previewing is Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen. The developers are former (original) EverQuest devs and they bring in their experience from working on one of the original MMORPGs into their development of Pantheon. I've seen some game play that was recorded, and it looked like much of the experience would mimic that of EQ back in the day, though I've not played Pantheon myself myself.

Damn really reminds me of old EQ. I honestly wanna give it a try. Will this run smoothly on a decent laptop? And is there a free trial before I buy?

Inspiring, to say the least. Me and my wife created a much smaller multiplayer persistent RPG and have always spoken about how making an actual MMO was well beyond our reach but... maybe it isn't as impossible as it is made out to be. That is not to discredit or bring down the effort put in to this, but we have always imagined certain aspects were just unapproachable by a small dev team of two. I personally appreciate you showing that that may not actually be true in the end even if it may be beyond /our/ means.

I hope you cover Tale of Toast which is another old school MMORPG and I found it quite enjoyable. That said, I'd like to know your thoughts on it. :)

I haven't played in at least a year, but I loved that game. I only gave it up because there was no PvP, which is something I really need in an MMO.

I tried this game out when it was in a free beta/alpha or something. I remember feeling off at first with the graphics, but then being pleasantly surprised at how nice the game actually played. I didn't think much of it though, I figured it wouldn't be a game that would ever have much of a population due to the graphics.

idk how people can say this game isnt worth $40 i mean how much money do you think it cost to make a video game from the ground up and host servers for it to be online. i mean the cheapest of mmos such as flyff still have people throwing money into a cash shop to support the servers and costs. people realy make no sense. youll pay $60 for a game like kirby that u can beat in a day but not $40 for an mmo thats going to last you months if not years...

ah project gorgon! I believe this was a failed kickstarter two to three years ago but they had a live server and even without the kickstarter cash they continued on. I revisited this game two to three times over the years and its games like this that I absolutely love and hate! I love them because of the awesome in game experiance! But at the same time these awesome passion projects take so many years to even get off the ground, particularly because of the small dev teams in this game only two people. Either or its nice to see this game thrive!
