LOVE the sound of those old John Deere and Farmall tractors. We had an old Model A growing up. That was a fun little tractor. Dad sold it in 2000 for a LOT more than he paid for it back in 1974. Simple, easy to maintain machines that run and run and run.

It's wonderful to see running Johnnie Poppers and equipment that helped build America. A big Thumbs up to the John Deere engineers for getting so much from so little. At one time, it was so common to hear poppers daily, just like hearing the distance sound of steam engine trains. I remember when I rode on a steam train from Omaha to Arkansas and to a 5 year old, just how massive it was. It was, for me, a swell time to grow up in .

Part 1: As far as the John Deere, I have no clue why they have 2 gas tanks. The John Deere does have 2 engines, a small engine to start the big engine. The Farmall has one engine but can run on 2 kinds of fuel. It has a small gasoline tank that is about 1 gallon in size and a big diesel fuel tank to run on which in this Farmall MD is about . The reason the Gasoline tank is 20 gallons in size.

it starts up on gasoline but is transferred to diesel, which is its main fuel. I think its for those cold days so the tractor can start easier and warm up on gasoline, then transfer to diesel when it gets warmed up because diesels doesn't like to start when they are cold.

Well it didn't take you long to figure out the 720! Nice tractor you got there. The pony motors cost more to restore than the rest of the tractor, so take good care of it. And just a tip, when you go to crank the big engine, don't touch the throttle because the extra fuel can get into the combustion chamber and backfire.
@lobblandrecovery11 жыл бұрын
lovely looking tractor there wes. i have one here in the uk but not in as good of condition. that button you was pressing next to the starter button is for the fuel gauge (only has power when you press it). Again, beautiful tractor you have there. Enjoy it.

Part 2: The reason the gasoline tank is so small is because the engine is only meant to run on gasoline for a few minutes until the engine gets warmer so it can run on Diesel. The Diesel tank is so much bigger because it is the primary fuel for the engine, which these Farm tractors mostly ran for hours at a time. I understand where you are coming from, I am a country boy (but live in the city) and we have a couple tractors of our own that I am trying to get up and running again. hope this helps.

With the diesel throttle completely closed, let the gas engine turn over the diesel engine until the diesel builds oil pressure, then advance the diesel throttle and it will start. This method of starting ensures that you have proper lubrication in all places. This is especially important on cold starts with conventional (thick) oil.

Twas really to cold start them. This tractor was built at a time when 6volt electrical systems were a way more common then 12volt. So 12volt batterys would have been a way more expensive and more often then not they wouldnt have had the output amps to turn over the engine quick enought to start them from cold. So the best way to start the big diesels from cold was to either have a gas/diesel engine like in the mcormick or pony start it using a smaller gas engine.
@Spot-Light-Mods11 жыл бұрын
Most of the 720's have pups but the later ones near the end of production had electric starters
@bigtrucker2611 жыл бұрын
Gas starts quick&easy, diesel is higher compression. Start gas, use gas to start diesel, shut off gas. Necessary with older/weaker electric systems

AHA! Thank you! Boy, they were clever back then, eh? I was puzzled, because I could not see a 1 or 2 gallon getting you anywhere! But if you only use it to get things going, well, it would last a while. I wonder: Was there 2 engines, one small gas one and one big main diesel, or were they clever enough to make the same engine burn both fuels? (I know enough to know that diesel has always been cheaper than gas!)
