With the latest update, OneNote desktop finally lets you switch between vertical and horizontal tabs. This way you can have your notebooks, sections and pages neatly organized on the left side. This way you can have the same navigation experience like in OneNote on the web, iPad, Mac, and OneNote for Windows 10.

I like that options has been introduced but it really fits my workflow better to have the old layout. But I guess that is a question of preference.

How is it "cluttered" with pages on the right? I can get to any notebook, section and page within seconds. I hate the vertical tabs because it keeps hiding parts of the navigation and forcing me to constantly scroll to find what I'm looking for. And the original view keeps my notes in the center of the screen where I can work with them instead of along the right-hand side.

I am so used to the pages on the right style. And it’s always bothered me when I was on 365 or my iPad it looked different. I will change the view today and do the everything on the left. Seems worth it. You sold me on the benefit.

Once I got use to Windows 10 version OneNote became so much more organized and useful

I never like the desktop section as tabs because it is so different from tabs concept in other implementations especially browsers. This makes so much more sense. They could have evernote style with notebook and section as separate sidebar column that you can collapse. Perhaps that's possible option in future I guess.

I don't have that option in View, Leila. I have 365 on Desktop, but no idea which version of ON I'm using. It should be the desktop version, but who knows with MS's silliness? I already have something quite near your new look. I've always had Pages on the left, directly under the selected Notebook-I don't display the Notebook pane, as I tend to spend a chunk of time in one notebook, and then switch to another chunk of time in another book. So Notebook pane would be poor use of screen room for me. Sections of the selected Notebook are still across the top. I'm ok with that, since that row is used anyway by the Notebook 'cell'.

I like the sections on top so I don’t have to bother with other Notebooks when I’m working and navigating on sections under 1 notebook.

The left side should be for list of sections instead of books and a drop-down arrow for selecting books just same as onenote for windows 10

One Note RUINED their app and my confidence in Microsoft when they changed the layout WITH NO NOTICE and NO WAY TO GO BACK. I used it daily since BEFORE it was free... I paid $75 for it as a stand alone app and counted on it, only to have them surprise me with a crazy design change that was permanent and also a surprise.

Horizontal tabs look terribly cluttered, and the main reason I use "OneNote for Windows 10" (even from my windows 11 machine). The second main reason is Onenote for Windows 10 prominently shows the synch status. I'll try out this tip when back in the office. They will eventually so supporting "OneNote for Windows 10"

One Note MUST survive. You said it would. Is this the update? The view presentation is enormously important. "Cluttered" means reassurance to me. So, the new toggling is tops important.

I think the cluttered look is fine with few tabs, but as soon as I have a bigger setup it is impossible to navigate in an orderly way - even with groups. For that reason I prefer the vertical layout. Same in browsers.

​@Leila Gharani Are you displaying the Windows 10/11 version? I have Office 365 and under my 'View' tab there's no 'Layout'. I can't seem to find it under 'Customize Ribbon' 'All Commands'. If you can do a video detailing this option for 365, that would be great! 😉

OneNote is the most confusing app I've worked with because it has different layouts and options depending on the version you have and there many versions out there. Microsoft is finally bringing them all together into one so hopefully soon we'll all be working in the same one.
