i feel this and other songs were more bernie becoming a frontman, this album in particular--New Order becomes New Order. i dont think they'd been as big with Ian, not in the states...still be a top legendary indie band, but no way he would be singing Bizarre Love Triangle or their bigger hits...though worlds apart, AC DC wasnt going to be mega stars in the US with Bon Scott...the industry and pop fans are kinda weird. Probably would have broken up a few years in. He was not looking to be a pop star. I'll agree this is my favorite song, Lonesome Tonight and Ceremony close.

@@i_am_the_void probably because barney kept changing the lyrics to be about his knob
@Jonathanmcc4 жыл бұрын
@@i_am_the_void I was at the gig too. It was a punk thing to spit at bands which had died out by 1983 but Cork was a bit behind the times. They were spat at as they walked onstage and Peter Hook went to the mike and said in a very menacing voice "Someone in here is spitting!". It stopped after that. I don't think they left early - it was just a shortish set with no encore". It was also the first time I heard Blue Monday i.e. before I heard it on the radio. I know The Smiths walked off stage in Cork after 20 mins due to spitting a few years later (I wasn't at that one). Maybe that's the one you mean Brick?
@DaveAnchovies3 жыл бұрын
@@Jonathanmcc spitting? they're not exactly "punk rock" at this point...i wonder what came first? the spitting or the lyric changing?
@Jonathanmcc3 жыл бұрын
@@DaveAnchovies the problem was certain sections of the crowd spat at every act - didn't matter whether they were punk or not. The spitting originated in the UK punk scene in the 70s and it took a while to die out in Cork.

@DaveAnchovies3 жыл бұрын
the National have none of the raw balls these guys had in these days continuing without their frontman...Bernie's guitar is just raw noodling a lot, while the rhythm section holds things in place...remember, they really were a punk band a few years prior. Having Gillian to back him up didnt hurt. Ive seen the National and ill never understand how they fill arenas, at least Arcade Fire brought something unique...and covered the ill-fated Jay Reatard (with opening bad Spoon, another band who plays it safe but nods to the underground by covering Reatard, Eddy Current--another underground trasure from Australia). Bernie and New Order saved Factory Records in the same way Mudhoney stuck around just to see SubPop survive. Both bands took a hit to see the right thing thru. For SubPop, just long enough for the Nirvana explosion and Factory continued the bad business but New Order stuck around way longer than they had to.

For me this song is the beginning and the end, it's cyclical in a beautiful way, applicable to so many emotions, imperfectly performed by a group of extremely talented individuals who were often at each others throats in the writing,recording and performing of their music, this is what happens when 4 geniuses bring their absolute best to a song, you can even hear ians influence in this one, this is by far my favourite NO song and my favourite song ever, if there was ever a song to be played at my burial it would be this, I hope I still love this song 30,40,50 years in the future.

he was always a messy guitarist, especially when he head to sing...live JD boots and this early era of New Order are "loose" on the guitar, having Gillian back him up was cool. I didnt see them until the later part of the 80s and they never touched these songs...very electronic sets. if he had stage fright, taking place of the longtime mate and frontman probably didnt help. Joy Division would screw off live, too...the fans took it serious, the band was more laid back. This song built for New Order, and imo, Ceremony was better as a New Order track. Good to hear loose live versions...if youve never heard Joy Division live...its gonna be loose. Bernie had big shoes to fill and ill take any live version of this, Lonesome Tonight...really not worried about it being note for note live
