My "Perfect Kiss" story: I moved into my grandparents house because they lived near the college I was going to. They were a couple of old southern (US) folks whose cultural exploration ended with the Grand Ole Opry. Even by the 80s Elvis was still a little edgy to them. Very good people, just not terribly adventurous. So in walks this teen grandson who was playing all this new odd music they had no idea even existed. They tried to get it, but to them I was playing something out of Star Trek. I was obsessing over the Low-Life album at the time, played it at least once a day. My grandfather walks in one day, doing that grandparent thing where they desperately want to connect with their grandkid, but there is just no connection points. So he stood there listening to the space alien sounds of "Perfect Kiss". Being an ol' country boy, the only thing that made any sense to him was the frog sounds, so he turned to me and started ribbiting like he was singing along or something. At the time it was incredibly awkward, bizarre moment. He smiled and left the room after that, relieving me of my teenage second-hand cringe. Later I was telling friends about this, and in between the laughter realized what a sweet old man he was actually being. So now when ever I hear this song it reminds me of a befuddled, yet sweet ol' country boy from Arkansas just trying to make a connection with his weirdo grandson with the crazy hair. I'm sure that was the furthest thing from New Order's mind when writing this song.

Thanks for that wonderfully evocative story. I must be the same age as you, but I grew up in an old industrial town in Victoria, Australia that had been in slow decline ever since demand for things like steam engines fizzled out, but your grandparents sound fairly similar to the old people in my home town. I'm seeing Peter Hook and the Light play in Melbourne this Friday, although I think they're doing a Joy Division set rather than New Order, but sometimes they play Perfect Kiss as a warm up.

*YOOOOO!!!!* Are we covering Low Life!? That's my favorite album from you guys! I'll always stand firm in my belief that The Perfect Kiss is the *epitome* of dance rock music. A pounding rhythm that goes absolutely off the wall during the breakdown, liquid synth arpeggios, lush strings, chaotic use of a cowbell, Barney"s earnest vocal delivery, frogs, the domineering presence of Hook's bass playing, *frogs*, it's got it all, man. Out of all my 12' records, an original 1985 pressing pf TPK is my most prized possesion. Never gets old lol, and needless to say, *perfect indeed*

I remembered the first time I heard TPK, it was actually off of Substance (1987). Then, when I started diving into the NO catalog, I listened to the Low-Life version. I like it, but I like the original 8-minute-plus version more (even live)! I can only imagine if they had released the full version on Low-Life how much more of an impact it would have had! New Order has had a lot great, memorable tracks over the years. TPK has a special place in my heart and headspace!

Great song and definitely a great band, with all the bad that went on they made incredible music. Hooky's bass is a beast on this album and all the others. Production wise back in the day is unbeatable. Todays music with all the technology still isn't as good as as New Orders.
