That’s crazy cause I’m currently staying on camp st which is right off Canal st. I been riding around bourbon/canal the last few days on these electric bites. I’m from the Westside of Atlanta, and one thing that stands out to me is how dirty, and smelly New Orleans is. I went to Tulane Ave, and St Bernard for food the last couple days, and didn’t sense any higher danger than any other city, but all the people sitting around doing nothing is definitely noticeable. It’s like there is no hope, and no sign of progress.

Being a native to the city for over 70 years, I can tell you that all those bright colored bldgs are NOT typical New Orleans colors. After Katrina the new interlopers came and are trying to give the city a Caribbean vibe. Those colors are not historical to the French Quarter or any part of New Orleans.

I'm a former New Orleanian now living in Houston tx. and you're right, those "colorful" houses has been on the rise since after Katrina especially in the Black neighborhoods such as Toledano Street uptown and scattered around some downtown areas 6th and 7th ward, with the federal government (FEMA) giving homeowners federal funds to renovate their properties, it gave them the opportunity to brighten up their rental properties in carribbean colors and planting palm trees also. ⚜️⚜️⚜️

Home sweet home. But Nee Orleans is like a ghost town these days, with less than half its population pre Katrina. So many left and never came back. The city is basically empty now. Where the streets used to be jammed with people walking, even Canal street, the main drag, sidewalks are empty... Pretty sad really. What used to be a nonstop party city full of people and things to do, is now only a small remnant of its former self. Almost barren looking now. Thanks for the video!!!

metro new orleans area (greater nola) population was right around (just below) 1 million right before katrina. it is now almost 1.3 million (around 1.27 mil). orleans parish itself is much smaller and was around 450 thousand pre-katrina. it is still a little less at the moment but def not half. it's around 388 thousand (it was already 392 thousand by 2016 so not all the changes are katrina based). also, the peak orleans parish population was in around 1960 at nearly 630 thousand so the decline in the orleans parish population was a general trend over many decades, with it already declining below 500,000 by 1990 (about 20% drop from its peak). Although there was obviously a sharp drop right after katrina, it was already dropping, and the sudden drop was immediately followed by a sharp rise in the 5 years right after katrina, returning to a rough equilibrium by about 2010 and leveling off almost completely by 2015.

Of course the area where the most tourists flock is the area with the most overpriced mid tier food, that's just business. Despite New Orleans being associated with French design, food and history, there's not much "French" per se' in the city to see, the buildings in the "French quarter" are majority SPANISH in design and construction with only 3 or 4 buildings there being French, even the poboy bread we bake and eat isn't really "french" because Italians and Germans baked and sold this bead in New Orleans (Leidenheimer-German, Gendusa-Sicilian/Italin)Italian, even the sausages aren't French but GERMAN and ITALIAN and the French market" wasn't French at all, it was Germans, Italians, Irish, native-Americans and Creoles who marketed their produce their, not the French! ⚜️⚜️⚜️
