I am a Uber and Lyft driver and some parents try this regularly. I ALWAYS allow parents to ride to the school and end the ride at the school letting the parents ride free back home. I know the hardships of a single mother because I've been there. Please don't send your babies alone in a rideshare.

They are irresponsible with their bodies, irresponsible with their lives, what makes you think they will be responsible with their children. I had heard this story in part a few days ago. Now I get it. Her mistake in the whole thing was not to put her kid in the car, but to not remove her kid from the car when the driver said he didn't feel comfortable transporting the 5-year-old alone. Her crime was committed when she turned around and went back in the house, ignoring the driver's protests. Bus drivers get a serious background check and they are finger printed multiple times and drug tested randomly . I was an assistant on the school bus and I had to get these things done and I was not the driver. Also, drivers for the district have to pass a month long course before they are approved to drive kids to and from school

What doesn't make any sense is if taking an unaccompanied minor somewhere is an issue, why did the driver drive off with the kid and take him to a police station? If I told the mom that I couldn't take the child somewhere without an adult, and she said "whatever" and walked in the house and refused to come back out, I'm calling the police right there. It's a parenting thing though. Why would you leave a 5 year old with a complete stranger. Is the driver responsible for making sure the kid goes into the school and sign the child in? If something happened to the child then the driver assumes responsibility? Girls have been assaulted by drivers so imagine the possibility for a child. I drive for Lyft about 3 days per week. There is NOTHING wrong or illegal for a parent to request a Lyft ride for their child. Lyft needs to know that upfront, the driver has to agree to it, and the parent and driver must share their phone screens.
