"The Parting Glass" is a traditional Irish and Scottish folk song that dates back to the 17th century. Its origins are not precisely known, but it has become a popular and enduring piece in Celtic music. The song is often associated with farewell and parting, making it a poignant choice for occasions where people bid goodbye to each other.
The lyrics of "The Parting Glass" typically express sentiments of farewell, reflection, and nostalgia. Over the years, the song has been interpreted and performed by various artists, and it has become a staple in Celtic music repertoires. I posted my first version of this jig over a year ago, and it's become my favorite farewell number in my live show.
This set is comprised of three jigs, the first my original jig adaptation of the Parting Glass, second into Merrily Kissed the Quaker's wife, and finally a fantastic pipe jig in Eb that I CANNOT remember the name of. I know the melody and I know that I didn't write it, but every bagpiper I've asked doesn't know the name either! I will happily credit the composer once I find out who they are. And finally, the set ends with a reprise of The Parting Glass.
This recording is from my Celtic Christmas tour, which I hope to bring to many more cities in 2024!
Accompanied by Paul MacLeish on the guitar. Thank you Paul!
Bagpipers, please enlighten me as to the name of the third jig if you can!
Much love,
