A few trains are seen passing this automatic level crossing with half barriers in the Stour Valley, Kent. The location is next to a bridge over the River Great Stour near the Stodmarsh National Nature Reserve, and is around half way between Sturry and Minster stations on the Ashford to Ramsgate Line. Currently, trains have to pass over this level crossing quite slowly, though this should be due to change when Thanet Parkway Railway Station opens and the rest of the Thanet Corridor Enhancement Programme is complete and in place to neutralise the journey time lost to stopping in the new station. Until then, the Southeastern Highspeed 'Javelins' will hardly be able to stretch their legs at all on this part of the line. There is a tight road bend up a hill on one side of this crossing, and it seems like one of the alarms was either barely sounding or completely silent on this visit.
A safety improvement for pedestrians here is noticeable already, as at some point last year, two LED pedestrian lights were installed here, each located on the right-hand / exit side on each side. This comes even though the footfall here is quite low, but will be necessary when the line speed is increased through here. A lot of vegetation has also been cleared from the lineside, greatly improving trackside views, and in turn sighting for train drivers, ready for this.
