Problem is, the 40mm size was introduced "for better television viewing". They won't go back to 38. In fact, ITTF managed to shove yet another half-mm into maximum-size specs while changing the rules again for poly balls. You'll see, we'll eventually end up playing with egg-sized baloons, "for better youtube cell-phone viewing."

@jasonadventures - There has been no rule change regarding materials. Undefined plastic formulas has been allowed for decades now. It just hasn't been tried very often. I'm not a fan of the ITTF's misinformation regarding celluloid, but the current ball does have problems because it has a (hidden) seam. There is a real problem to address. But the new ball may or may not address that problem well.

thanks for the review william. once again we are facing a change in our beloved sport. only time will tell if this will affect the top ranking and wich style will benefit or loose certain things .

The big question is will the companies make a ball that bounces the same? Also will they mandate to use a ball that is very different? Do you start praticing now with plastic ball or are they really going to change the ball?
@Jasonsadventures12 жыл бұрын
All the balls now are made from the exact same stuff and the differences between them are measured in fractions of a percentage point, I really can't see how that will be the case any more. So long as you pass the size weight and standard bounce test you can have any kind of performance in the ball you want with hundreds or thousands of different plastics being involved

Wow it's pretty cool to see that even Richard Prause is really good.

thanks for sharing... when are they actually going to use this for competition play?

Brilliant. Honestly that makes a lot of sense. If less spinny, simply make the ball smaller to what it used to be. Problem solved.

So all in all, the ball is worse in every aspect. Nice invention!

In the german version of the video at the end he added that long pimples will probably harder to play :(

There is simply not much of Celluloid material left in the world. If we keep using celluloid balls, the price will fly up.
@MegaShin99912 жыл бұрын
In fact the goal of the ITTF is make the game slower and less spinny to atract more fans and try to ends the hegemony of chinese players, but tihs isn´t the way to do this.

they should just change the table. there's nothing wrong with the ball now. i'd rather the table be higher as ppl aren't as short as they used to be centuries ago

Wonder how this will play out on anti rubbers and long pimples?

When will these be introduced and sold widely?

Guess Joo and WeiXing will have to retire now after the Olympics, these new balls will pose a greater disadvantage to them now.

If the ball breaks so quickly, why would ittf want to replace the old one with the new one?
@cosmeticcarrepair12 жыл бұрын
If it's less durable, make it cheaper. If it's less spinny then make it 38mm again.
@idnumber00212 жыл бұрын
why is there even a need to change the balls??????
@mambosun10012 жыл бұрын
all local leagues should boycott this ball change its just another case of change for changes sake for better or most likely worse.

I have a very real and large concern this will introduce a technology race to make a superior ball much like we have going on with rubber. Facing us with balls that perform vastly different to each other depending on who's ball a particular tournament is using etc. There is not definition in the new law about what plastic can be used so it seems open slather and at any cost. Mark my words this will be VERY bad for the sport.

Another step towards ruining a beautiful sport. IMO they destroyed table tennis when they increased the size of the ball... this is just beyond stupid.
