@@wc8561 At first it was my disbelief that something that weighs the thick end of 5,000 pounds could feel so agile. The Panamera does that thing great cars do where it wraps itself around you like a warm blanket on a cold day. You're almost at one with it. The steering is sharp and accurate (maybe lacking in feedback from the road surface, but it's so direct it almost makes up for that). Plus the rear-wheel steering really helps. You really can feel the thing pivot in tighter bends. Porsche's ceramic brakes are the best in the business, too. They're immediate, as in the braking starts right at the top of the pedal. There's no squeezing to do. You want to stop? It stops, and in a hurry, too. It's also ridiculously fast, sounds great, and is comfortable on longer commutes (took a road trip in it just to be sure). It feels just like the 992 I drove in 2019, but bigger and much faster (in a straight line).

Glad you plugged the E-fuels. Needs to be a more public discussion on this as when you factor in the environmental impact of bringing the charging network up to what’s required I suspect the E-fuels will start to be more competitive. Also it would be good to see some subsidies headed Porsches way for E-fuel development as that again would lead to a reduction in cost & improvement to efficiency. On a purely selfish note I just don’t want to contemplate a future that has no combustion engine in it !
@titaniummechanism3214 Жыл бұрын
We can use E-fuels for everything we can't or don't want to power with electricity or with hydrogen. As with hydrogen production, e-fuels are a lot less energy efficient than just using the electricity in an electric car or a train. And we'd need to built enough factories to produce that stuff and enough generation capacity and power grid infrastructure to support those factories. I don't see what would be to gain by going that way.

What Henry forgot to mention is that these e-fuels are super expensive because breaking water into hydrogen and oxygen is very onerous from an energy point of view, and the laws of physics say it cannot be improved. When all is said and done, making a few liters of e-fuel uses vast amounts of energy, and then 65% of that fuel will be wasted as head (see Carnot cycle) when transformed into mechanical power in the ICE . So altogether it could take 10kwh of energy to get 1kwh of mechanical energy for e-fuels, versus maybe 2kwh of total energy to get 1kwh of mechanical energy with an electric car (after accounting for transmission and storage losses). No government will allow e-fuels to grow in any scale given this extra low energetic efficiency of e-fuels, particularly as we already have shortage of power generation in most places throughout the world. Not happening

@lastlondon4 жыл бұрын
@@christopherayala4619 My comment is really in relation to e-fuels for car where EV is a viable solution, but clearly for aviation electric power is not possible given power density limit of batteries vs hydrocarbons. Still, if one wants a “closed-loop” fuel system (i.e. where carbon is taken out of the environment in order to produce fuel) then arguably bio-fuels (i.e. fuel made from plants) are a preferable alternative as they too take carbon dioxyde out of the environment (albeit not necessarily as much CO2 out of the air) and produce fuel at a much lower energetic cost than e-fuels. Porsche needs to let go e-fuels; there will be plenty of oil in the ground for decades to come, the governments will tax ICE cars and fuels to the point where it doesn’t make sense to buy new ones anymore. Older ICE will always run, and as oil price (pre-tax) increases over time as the existing supply dwindles, other oil wells that are currently not economical to exploit at less than $50 per barrel will become viable alternatives. Based one what I have read, fossil oil could still be cheaper than e-fuels even at $200 per barrel. Porsche should instead invest some money in carbon capture programs if they want to feel better about their ICE legacy

How should you use this contraption, charge every 40 miles, charge on the go , use the battery hold. Please could you elaborate on the use of the hybrid system.
@ColinMill14 жыл бұрын
Leave it in Hybrid auto is probably the best strategy. As for the hybrid system being dead weight there is one trick it can (and does) use even at constant speed. That is to use the motor/generator to load the engine to put it into a more efficient load condition and then use the electricity generated to "sail" later on. It's a bit like an automated burn and coast but using the battery rather than inertia as the energy store. Given that burn and coast can easily give 20% improvement in efficiency we might expect perhaps 15% from this system.

£142,000! Good thing it's big as I'd be living in it at that price 🤦♂️ Nice car and video as always though in all seriousness 👍

In that case, it is not a car that you can afford. Simple as that.

Cool. Nice review as always. I'm waiting, perhaps in vain, for a smaller Porsche 4 door. It may never happen since Porsche is VAG and Audi already has such cars. Not going to return to Audi, so for now it'll be Porsche for the sports car and BMW for the other vehicle needs.

I don’t know any friends that are worried about leaving emissions in the city and want to buy a emission free car. I do know people that like the instant power and torque from the electric cars.

Can I get a track version with the V8 but no battery? (I think I'd pay the same price (one day) for that beautiful engine and body by itself!)

I have an old 289 V8 with a 4 barrel Holly and a 4 speed top-loader. It exhausts out of a 2 inch Pacemaker and sounds like God, shouting. You have an appliance.

I drove the new "regular" E-Hybrid recently, good lord what a snooze. Sure it's nice if you have a sizeable family to drive around, but it's so frigging large while offering no emotional experience whatsoever.
@Lemma014 жыл бұрын
Interesting - so you also found it felt large - like Harry M.; (I was surprised Henry doesn't, here...).

It is an executive-aimed vehicle the lower end Panamera’s with it’s softer suspension and better sound deadening with the V6’s. The moment you drive the higher trims (ESPECIALLY the GTS) Porsche throws in more of their brilliant dynamic systems into the car to hide its weight much better than say a 4e-hybrid. Plus the Panamera is a heavy car, you can’t expect 911 levels of driving experience. But it is a near base model after all.

It looks big, feels big and is big. Duo to the design of its headlamps, it would be very difficult to make it appear smaller then it is.
@DavidChong4 жыл бұрын
@@kkfarmedkk sure but things like rear wheel steering could help make it feel smaller (smaller effective turning circle). feel smaller, mind you, but not necessarily lighter.
@kkfarmedkk4 жыл бұрын
@@DavidChong Feel in wheelbase, but not its size in general. Visually, it feels very big and wide. And correctly so. Its nearly 2 meters wide. Not to mention with the softer design on the hood, with the headlights.

I have the 4E Panamera and would say once you go above 120K USD for a Panamera then just go for the full petrol non hybrid version like the GTS and Turbo S because if your looking for performance then removing 300KG of a battery in the rear does make a big big big difference. Trust me you do feel the weight of the car once you take it to some twisty country roads and you would be so annoyed by the additional 300 KG of weight that you are carrying for the sake of a lower emission tax. If this is gonna be a daily driver just get the entry level 4-E hybrid like I did and save those additional money for something else.

I really like the Panamera Sport Turismo, there's something about it's shape that's very appealing and the interior is top notch. But, much like the majority of people in the world, I'll never earn enough money to afford one.

Never wanted one, but thanks to Henry I now do.

As long as the name is, it seems to be the best choice in it's class. Sure, it's not as dramatic as an AMG, but it's quite a good package in itself. And it's a Porsche. Enough said.
