I agree the first generation Panamera isn't a looker, but as a 4-year owner of a 970 Panamera S (yes, S, so two-wheel drive), I started to love it. It has every single option (ex-Danish bank CEO car) and it is the greatest everyday car I have ever driven or been driven in. The air suspension is so comfortable that you just glide on the highway. The space in the back is ludicrous: my 1.95m broter easily fits behind me in the back, height as well as leg wise. Plus I can fit a number of golf bags with 4 people in it. It easily fits two bicycles with the rear seats down. On and on the practicality goes. Also my car weighs 650 kilos (!!!!!!!) less than this car, since it doesn't have 4WD. So my car may 'only' have 400bhp and 500Nm, the difference in speed is probably not that large, which is kinda silly. The prices on the old Panamera are becoming really good nowadays, as with most luxury cars. So much value, and it can have every option this car in the review has. Another fact that probably nobody knows: did you know that the first generation Panamera was available as a manual? Very, very rare, but can be found on the large german car occasion website.
@14DENISS883 жыл бұрын
The peak would be manual Rwd S on springs. That thing must handle like dream.
@nigelha36993 жыл бұрын
interesting, as I drove a new Panamera 3.0 base model and at 186cm, i had almost no room behind me, and i drive quite close to the wheel - no straight arms here. Also I couldn't fit a set of golf clubs in the boot -straight. Need 107cm, boot was only 104 deep. Road noise was atrocious, worse than our Cayenne and the Macan they swapped it out for. Drives ok! Still didn't like the haptic buttons, and dash lights too bright for Oz country roads. It took about 5 minutes going through so many menus to dim them. Kept thinking I had it wrong as it was still too bright. One dial on the dash lowers the dash lowers the Cayennes...progress- perhaps not. I think Porsche is going backwards in ergonomics. Gone from benchmark to so so. Everyone complained about the Cayenne/Panamera dash and consoles buttons, but so easy to use quickly.

I really don't get how this end of the market are happy to be absolutely shafted by options you get as standard on cars costing a third or less than this - I mean most mid-range SUV's have had 360 degree cameras as standard for several years now!

I really wanted the GTS version of this, it looked like the sweet spot to me, but it's just too expensive when comparing alternatives and the depreciation is unplatable. I was delighted when Porsche brought out the Taycan Cross Turismo. The tax breaks available to company directors means it effctively costs half what a Panamera does when bought through a Ltd company. My 4S Taycan CT arrives in January.

James, can I suggest a more affordable take on the same theme. My 2013 E63 estate is incredibly practical, does the wafty limo thing very well and then morphs into a great sports saloon at the press of an AMG button, feels like it will last forever - and unlike the Panamera it costs circa £20k today. A remap has taken mine to still pretty unstressed 700bhp but with standard exhaust emits that subtle muscle car sound. Without the swollen arches of an RS6 its truly the wolf in sheeps clothing. My neighbour has a 2019 VW Tiguan R-Line and so many of the things you mentioned as options, are standard on the £40k Tiguan. Pan Roof, LED matrix lights etc. Not that I am comparing a Tiguan to a Panamera, but if the VW group can have these as standard features on a Tiguan, why do they become very expensive options on a Porsche?

I have owned the non-hybrid version of this car for two years, and can attest that it is far lighter, more engaging and visceral, and quicker than the hybrid version. Would be a much better choice to compare against any of the cars you mentioned, such as the RS6, the FF, or the AMG GT. I hope you review one of those. As for the Taycan, the rear seats and storage aren’t as big, and the limited range doesn’t cut it for long road trips. The Panamera Sport Turismo is the ultimate continent crusher for a family trip. Only the RS6 is really a competitor in that category.

Could not agree more with your verdict... my Panamera Gen 1 (Rev 2) GTS V8 is a very good 4 person luxury long distance sports car, whenever I get a replacement Panamera from the dealer (like the e-hybrid you tested), I am super happy to get back my own one asap (despite the optics - which grow on you over time). For me the latest generation Panamera suffers from no clear differentiation on drive train & experience & total weight - not emotional enough petrol car, which opens the door to consider the Taycan as real alternative.

As someone who's cross-shopping between this and its Cayenne variant nowadays, I'd like to express a couple of misconsiderations about Porsche's pricing strategy. Both of the cars will have their highest trim levels. Most of the tech we all want is non-standard. However, with some Porsche background, these cars actually have all of the chassis-related as standard. That involves PASM, PTV Plus, and more. You'll basically pay for the core and building from thereon. I personally don't like having Comfort Access (or Keyless Entry) on my cars, I travel a lot, and I'm worried that the vehicle might get stolen at night. InnoDrive is a requirement for UK roads, but it doesn't mean anything to most EU and US customers. Sports Exhaust is cool, but you can go for Techart or Cargraphic to get enhanced sound. Sunroof is good, but it makes it heavier. You can get Lightweight Sports Package. All in all, it's obviously pricey because there is Porsche Tax. It's not a cheap one, but it definitely feels better after my S Class and those BMW Ms with imbalanced engines and gearboxes.

@@darrenbradley1506 James mentions about the GT4C Lusso and the FF multiple times but not the Rapide. Yes agreed the rear occupant space is not as big as the Porsche, but if it wanted that kind of space the design of the car would’ve been compromised and it would not look like the rest of the beautiful Astons from that era. The rear space in the Rapide really is a first world problem and I have no idea why people complain so much. It’s beautiful in the back, so much more sense of occasion and drama in the rear seat compared to most cars on the market. Especially Compared to any other VH Aston or 2+2 car of that ilk from Italy and Germany it is the perfect solution. No other manufacturer has retained their beautiful sports car recipe book and combined practicality with two extra full seats and two extra doors. The panamera is not a 4 door 911, the Lusso and FF are not 4 seat 458s or the like from Ferrari. They certainly don’t look anything as good as their siblings. The Maserati Gran Turismo is the closest but again only has 2 doors. Aston pulled it off and the result is spectacular.

You've reviewed the wrong car. Pick of the bunch is either the Panamera GTS (great but down on power) or the facelifted Turbo S (without hybrid) Now it's not your fault, it seems Porsche simply want to push the hybrid and don't have an example of the non hybrid Turbo S on the press fleet (or rarely offer it) With 631ps and around 250kg odd lighter than the e-hybrid the Turbo S actually has a virtually identical power to weight ratio but with 250kg less to carry around its much more dynamic. Nice review mind you, although you appear to have copied Harry Metcalfes traditional opening frame for frame.

Agree he picked the wrong car to review. And this is infuriating because so many car reviews on KZbin do comparisons of the FF / Lusso, RS6, AMG GT, etc against the HYBRID model of this car, and they all complain about the weight and lack of dynamic feel, etc. Of course, it's an apples to oranges comparison and the non-hybrid version stacks up much more favorably against these competitors. Agree this is Porsche's fault with their press cars, but it's annoying that nearly every review has the narrative: "The Panamera is big, fast, and comfortable, but too heavy and not as sporty or fun to drive as its rivals..."

In my mind and wallet,£160'000 should buy me my dream 4 bed detached, separate double garage with field views from the rear bedrooms. 🤔😭

@@brianiswrong I hear you, Bryan, but those garages are going to push the price to 175,000. Well worth the extra 15K in my view! :-)
