Not only release them into the wild but consider farming them. Shrimp, prawn, eels, salmon, limu, even ahi are now “farmed” in captivity to enhance the stock. Why not opihi? I’ve heard people say that farmed salmon have more parasites and don’t taste as good as wild but they also have less mercury in them. So with the good can come the bad. It’s a trade off worth experimenting on. Yes, I love opihi.

What you need to do is regulate picking. The mainland has tons of marine life for harvesting because there are strict regulations. It is the hawaiian's right to harvest from the ocean but it is our responsibility to maintain the resource. You think hawaiians would allow unsustainable harvesting back in the day? Hell no.

Noble project but get real. Thirty days and one opihi the size of a pencil tip? Are these researchers getting paid with taxpayers $$$ ?

I lived all my life from the 90s to October 2021 and never tasted Opihi once. Always seemed yucky to me. What's it taste like?

Friend of mine who's homeless that lives Hilo side but around the area where you cross da bridge to go Waimea and Kona side harvests Opihi there. Although ethically it starts to become a problem at that point because if more people do that especially the homeless that live near beaches big island will start to decline in Opihi population too.
