That truck is just perfect! I love me a 359 with standup sleeper and a 3406B...especially in that shade of blue. Some new frame rails would really do that truck justice. Weird to think it was last on the road the year I was born....can't wait to see what you end up doing with it.

You're lucky to find one of those. Now comes the fun part about the 425 Cat engine. Depending on the SER# of the engine you make be lucky and have the 590 hp or just the 425hp from Cat. Yes on the B model engine Cat had the 590hp that got put in some trucks even earlier than this year's model. Most 425hp engines could take up to 550hp by turning the two screws and not hurting the engine. (Remember I said most and not all Cat 425 engine) Now the 590hp engine was on its very own on how much they could take. I was told by a Cat Engineer that they were going to be a Marine/Industrial engine and for some reason were not and some made it to trucks. The Cam is different and the blower/turbine, as well as the fuel nozzles and you, could do 800hp on them. They were the King of the road for those of us that had them. (I got one by hauling Cat products and asking, begging for one of those engines and being lucky to have had one of their experimental engine in the 70s) You have to remember back then that a 425 Cat and a Cummins 400/444 and the 600 kta were the main engines around that time zone and here comes Cat with this type of engine and Horse Power. What type of transmission does it have in it?

@@Bubbles8V92 I am trying to think what serial number prefix was a 590hp engine. Have to look it up as I can't remember. Okay after looking for one of these engines, I have found two as they are still out there. They are below and you have to look at the Arrangement number to get the correct parts for one of them. Notice the INDUSTRIAL 3406 engine and look at them real close and see the difference in things on the outside. There are different 9Y8251 and the 9Y8252 engine arrangements so you have to look. I will have to look for the 800 hp engine later as I don't have time right now. Go here to see a picture of one in a Pete. duckduckgo.com/?q=9Y8251+cat+engines&iax=images&ia=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fi.pinimg.com%2Foriginals%2F77%2F1b%2F1f%2F771b1f7841c6690c031d83c40ae6f3f3.jpg&t=ffcm Here to see more about them and what one already set with the model number and all that stuff that is for sale. swiftequipment.com/used-caterpillar-3406b-diesel-engine-p-102458.html Serial No : 2WB14901 Quantity : 1 590HP Caterpillar 3406B industrial diesel engine power unit, Serial Number: 2WB14901, Arrangement Number: 9Y8251 Hope that helps as now you know when someone says there was only the 425 b model you know better.

@@Bubbles8V92 All of this is off the top of my head trying to remember. If I remember correctly, A Cat 425 b model 3406 had around top 1400 ft pounds of TQ (The 400 A model had 1200 ft pounds of TQ) and the 400 Cumapart had about the same. Now here is where it got interesting as the Mack 350 had a little more 1500 and if set up correctly could out pull both. Strange I know, but Mack had their stuff together back then and had a V8 engine that put out over 725 hp a E8 or E9 was the model number. (Saw a few of those babies with Here Kitty-Kitty painted on the hood and yes they were bad to the bone). The Cat 3408 was around 600hp tops with only 1550 TQ until the P model came out. (That 3408 engine P model HP was just plain unreal and the TQ was to like about every 6 months you were going to buy new driver tires). That engine you had to buy and then place it in a truck as I don't know of one ever coming in a truck. Here is the problem with the 15 speed. It is a very good transmission, but it has bearing problems with the low gear shaft that can't take the higher TQ or horsepower. A kta 600 puts over 1600 ft pounds of TQ out and some Cat engines put over 1500 ft pounds of TQ and some of these put even more out. (KTTA 600 was over 2400 and the P model 3408 was like 3500 ft pounds of TQ). The 15 speed was not made for that kind of TQ. 6x4, 6x5, and one 13 speed were. (Want to say it was a Spicer 13 over). The 6-speed and 5-speed you wanted coming out of Mack trucks. I still say the best engine Cat ever made was 1693 425 hp that could do 600 hp plus with 1600 ft pounds of TQ that sounded like a metal bucket with a bunch of rocks being swung back and forth at ideal. You had to retire the timing a little and change the fuel settings and watch your gages or you would not have an engine to get the 600 plus hp. Mind you it only got maybe 4 mpg on the downhill side, but it sure could pull. ( The main difference between the 325 and 425 was the air-charge cooler, the 425 had one the 325 didn't have one. You could make the 325 do the same as the 425 by setting the fuel and air mixture even though it did not have the cooler) The funny thing is the 3406 engine came from 1693 as it is the same block.
@StonedPony12 жыл бұрын
Forgot to say that the fuel pump was under the turbine on the right side of the engine and not on the left side like the 3406 engines were. Strange I know.

My dad drove one. tried to buy it in 2001 for 7,000$ it was a 1987 EXHD peterbilt 359 with the standup sleeper. Gold color with the stripe kit. i still got pictures of it and have never seen a truck of the same color since. really wish we would have got it cause the owner that got it before we did took the standup off for a flatop 🤮 🤮 then painted it all flat black. Ruined a Legendary truck. Probaly one of the rarest 359s due to the color alone. paint matched frame as well. 3406B with the road ranger trans.

Its a true shame my dad had the company and loan setup and the day we went to pick it up they already sold it 😭 😭. Havent seen that 359 since 2003. He has a garage so maybe its in there but idk. Just a shame i could only imagine what it woulda sold for today at auction. My opinion it deserved to be in a museum. It had everything a trucker coulda asked for in a truck lol she was turned up to push 550Hp to i forgot to add that.
