Love the channel guys! I'm also a tall guy at 1.98m and am coming off a 2017 XL Stumpy with 457mm reach. I'm ordering a XL Hyrax Frame next week and was wondering how you found the XL fit from a seated and attack position?
@WILDAIRSPORTS4 жыл бұрын
The bike has a fairly steep seat tube angle which brings you forward on the bike when seated. This keeps the front wheel planted nicely on the climbs and makes for efficient peddling. In the attack position the bike really comes to life. With 435mm chainstays and 510 reach, it is super stable but really responsive at the same time.

@@WILDAIRSPORTS Awesome and one last thing, see you put the 200mm dropper post from Dale. Obviously no problem with insertion length on the XL frame? Know I'll need a shim for the 34.9 seatpost.

Been taking a good look at this bike. I've test ridden one, but it was a custom build and didn't enjoy the heavier fox36 on the front. So hopefully the factory build is lighter, keen to try it again. Did the reach also feel a bit on the narrow end during your tests?
@WILDAIRSPORTS4 жыл бұрын
The variance in fork weight is minor but where you can really save on weight is on wheel and tyre choice. As far a alloy bikes go, the Hyrax is on point weight wise when it comes to the frame. I ride with 800mm bars rolled forward a fair bit. That combined with 510mm reach works well for me. If we’re getting into the real details though, I could comfortably ride with 815mm bars and reach of 520. The only bikes that I am aware of at those numbers are Pole bikes. Cheers Doug🤘

@@WILDAIRSPORTS Thanks dude! I'll look into maybe going wider bars and seeing if that works. It's strange because on a size medium (current bike) I feel comfortable. But on a medium Hyrax I feel all cramped in. So either wider bars or a size large. The one I rode also had custom wheels, think DHF front and DHR rear with some other hoops, can't recall which ones.

Just got my hyrax! What a machine. Can ask what stem you're running? Got a 40mm stem with 800mm bars on an XL and am wondering if a 50mm stem wouldn't be better for is taller okes?I'm 1.98m.

You may find the added reach is more comfortable and won't upset the steering too much. Worth looking into!

@WILD AIR TV I am looking at possibly getting a PYGA soon, either a Hyrax or Slakline, a couple friends have Slaklines and say there isnt that much difference in pedaling efficiency as one would expect, and that the penalty is well worth the extra travel, would you agree? I am really struggling to come to a decision. Test rode a Hyrax and it was amazing, trying to arrange a demo on a Slakline, but your input would be awesome!
@WILDAIRSPORTS3 жыл бұрын
Hey Chad, Jason here. I have ridden both bikes and settled on the Slakline for the way it sticks to the ground in corners with the extra travel. They are similar and it will come down to personal preference in the end as usual, haha! Riding both bikes is definitely a good move. Let us know what you decide on!

you guys talk about the stage max but have no review on it... I am a semi serious racer but really enjoy trail riding. my friend has the hyrax but I want to still be semi competitive on the marathon scene and I want to run a 2nd water bottle inside the frame for less stops and run a dropper all the time. My friends bike literally has as little pedal bob as my Scott spark RC 900 comp. What would you guys say stand out between the two bikes? driveability, confidence, weight, raceability. I just want a one quiver bike that pedals well, good light wheels and about 12kg overall weight, but still can go smash some enduro lines on the long weekends. This being said, I keep up with the trail guys without a dropper seatpost, xc tyres and a racebike with 100m/110mm travel, Just want to have more fun doing it and still have the possibility of racing without feeling like I have too much of a "brakes dragging feeling" disadvantage.

Hey Werner. It sounds like you've described the Stage Max pretty accurately there. It will be a bit lighter and more lively than the Hyrax, not as capable but still very capable!
@gideonvanzyl15504 жыл бұрын
Can I ask your opinion? If you're mostly hitting the trails, but planning to do 3 - 5 stage races a year, would you opt for the Hyrax or the Stagemax? I'm not chasing podiums, and I'm unlikely to ever hit the big jumps at full speed, so I'm looking for something fun, and forgiving if I get my line wrong, but that I'll still enjoy on a stage race. I'm test driving both next week, was just looking for some advice from someone that's ridden both.

Gideon van Zyl hey Gideon, the Stage Max will be ideally suited to the riding you have described👌 Having ridden 2 x joBerg2c’s, 3 x W2W and 2 x Berg&Bush and 2 seasons of enduro on the Stage Max, you won’t be disappointed👌

@@WILDAIRSPORTS Brilliant, thanks for the prompt response! I had a chat with Louis Knipe yesterday. He reckons the XO spec is the sweet spot, with carbon wheels. Seeing that I'm coming of a Giant hardtail with a 1x12 SRAM SX groupset, do you reckon I need the XO? And the carbon wheels? I've read a bit, but it seems to be a fairly individualised feeling, with carbon feeling faster on some bikes, and twitchy on others. Aluminium similarly seems smoother, but slower, if I understand correctly. Lastly, brilliant channel! Definitely my favourite KZbin sub at the moment. 👌
@WILDAIRSPORTS4 жыл бұрын
Gideon van Zyl the build spec is really up to you but Doug ran a GX 1 x 11 drive train with Level brakes for years and was impressed with its durability. It’s also great value for money. That being said, the XO build is very nice. The GX drive won’t let you down but if you’ve got the cash then XO is a nice to have in our opinion. Re wheels, it’s the weight saving that really counts here in our experience. In terms of how the bike felt, we couldn’t really pick on the difference because the type of terrain your ride on a marathon bike isn’t really pushing them to their limits. I’m summary, for a great value solid build we would go with the alloy Deed Tren 30 or the Lyne Amp 30 wheels and GX drive. For a lighter bike at a higher price point but still a super durable build then the Deed carbon or Lyne carbon wheels with XO drive is the way to go. Come down to budget in the end. You can’t go wrong with either.

@@WILDAIRSPORTS do you by any chance know the weight of the new Hyrax Alu and the Stage Max?
@WILDAIRSPORTS4 жыл бұрын
Finnish Cichlid there is a fairly big difference in weight considering that the Hyrax is an enduro bike and the stage max is a carbon marathon trail bike. It would also depend on the build. For a frame for frame comparison, best to check out the Pyga website.
