55,000 seat Stadium for an Olympics is a joke.. spend the money in Victoria Park build a legacy stadium bring Brisbane up to the 21st-century and the chance to host major events in the future.
@farmerooni4 күн бұрын
Only the Gabba and Vic Park offer feasible sites for a new stadium. If you're going to build, it has to be 5 minutes max from the central 4 stations of Roma St, Central, Fortitude Valley and Bowen Hills. These are the stations which every train line goes to: you can't make a trip to the game a 40 minute journey into the city followed by a change-of-station and another 15 or 20 minute journey back out again. If it's going to be a successful stadium, you want ease-of-access, and lots of public transport. Especially if you're taking the kids. The choice of location will literally make or break any future success. Just look at how Boondall is regarded, being stuck so far away from the CBD. Spending half the money will just generate another white elephant. Spending more money and getting the infrastructure right may well pay off the additional costs in the medium-term.

QPAC & the convention center should be knocked down and build the stadium ABOVE the South Brisbane train station. The eastern end of the stadium should remain open for amazing city views from inside and outside the stadium. This also means the stadium is right next to the new metro. QPAC is terrible, so there is no problem in knocking that over it needs to happen anyway and something better built for them. There are plenty of options for where a new QPAC can be developed in around the same area. The convention center can easily be incorporated into the new stadium... possibly even QPAC... Plus, stadiums get little use especially when you only have 1 AFL team. The infrastructure that surrounds the stadium would get more usage if QPAC and the convention center would incorporated into the stadium also. p.s. can we call it "The Big Queenslander" and have the Fascade look like a Queenslander (house) from the outside????

As per comments, i think brisbane has the opportunity to build a new stadium and put in new tech which has been used overseas. I say get rid of the gabba, turn it half the land into a park, and the other half for shops/residential and downgrade Suncorp to a 25-30k stadium (since suncorp needs a reno anyways and very limited as well in expansion to higher than 52k). Keep Suncorp for most rugby/soccer games (have bigger games played at the new stadium) Then build a brand new stadium in victoria park or whatever near the city near public transit (yes its cost more and add the retractable pitch will add extra, but be aware its also going to be the future for brisbane teams) to i say 75-80k for Olympics and variable from there on. Reason why i say variable is that its will be a retractable pitch and seating at the same time. For oval sports, 65k and for rectangular sports around 70k. The pitch for oval will pop up when oval sports are played, and the extra seating ether get slide back or underneath the ground. Likewise for rectangular sports, the oval pitch get retracted underground and then the extra seating and rectangular pitch gets moved up in place (that will also allow for rectangular sports to be closer to the action). Also there should be a third option for concert pitch which is just a plain floor so the grass pitch don't get damaged. Yeah its going to be a bit higher up for oval sports (to fit in with rectangular sports, bit like wellington stadium), but i think that the best way of going multipurpose. Also whinge about budget and whatnot, but heck this idea is probs more better in regards to spend in one go and don't worry about in 10-30 years time of building another sport ground post olympics....

You are 100% correct. Brisbane need to learn from what Adelaide & Melbourne did wrong. Football Park and Waverly Park absolute failures. Hamilton, Nathan and even Woolloongabba are never going to be what Brisbane needs. Similarly, a Boondall entertainment centre. My 2c is they need to knock down QPAC, the convention center and maybe the ABC building... and build the new stadium ABOVE South Brisbane train station. This would cost an absolute fortune... but imagine how good it would be. The location, the transport and how amazing it would look on TV. Now is the time to build something that will be seen as an absolute asset to the people of Brisbane for generations to come, not some half baked band-aid solution - and my view has NOTHING to do with a 2 week blip called the Olympics.

If I were to decide on Sydney case, I wouldn't have flogged off barangaroo to the highest office wanks or crown, I would use that to put in a high 70-100k muliti-use stadium in that corner of the CBD and have parkland surrounding the stadium.

In order to get Brisbane up to speed with other Olympics Cities we need to spend upon $100billion . With The Brisbane Lions asking for a new stadium as they can guarantee 50,000 bums on seats everytime they have a home game. While Vic Park is getting built The Lions can still play at The Gabba instead of a half baked field at Springfield.

You would think that the AFL would be incredibly invested in getting the Gabba upgraded. Would they not put forward the idea that gather round could go to Brisbane for three+ years to help the cause? it was estimated that in Adelaide gather round brought over 80 million to the economy. It would make it easier for politicians spend more if they could point to the money that would be coming their way over the coming years from the investment.
@farmerooni4 күн бұрын
The AFL doesn't like the Gabba even with an upgrade. They have issues with the outdated change rooms and back-end team facilities, which probably can't be addressed properly with a Gabba upgrade scenario. As per the video, they also want more corporate boxes to generate more revenue as well. Which doesn't seem possible just retrofitting an existing stadium. There's also costing issues with refit vs. knock-down-rebuild, with the Quirk led report actually favouring a brand-new rebuild as the more sensible option.

Finally a comment about the one issue not being mentioned: nostalgia. I don't go to the Gabba to watch AFL, and I only watched cricket there after becoming an adult. So I'm not emotionally invested in the stadium or location. Having said that, is it really a deal breaker to move to a new site? I never thought the Gabba was that good of a location: no adjacent public space to gather around pre-game, no room to spill out onto after the game ends. And the resulting traffic chaos (and queing to get onto a bus) is just annoying. Is history that big a factor when considering a new stadium site?
@BigBlueMan1184 күн бұрын
@@TOTN17 a decent size meaning what? Brisbane will be lucky to have 10 events per year that need an oval Stadium higher capacity than 40k. If the Victoria Park option gets chosen can we Turn the Gabba into a boutique 15k rectangular stadium for smaller soccer+rugby games then?

Just rebuild the Gabba. If the Lions want to complain, tell them to go back to Victoria. Save the big upgrade for the number 1 sport in the state and upgrade Suncorp or build a new rectangular stadium. You're more likely to fill it consistently.
@Gary-vv5gt3 күн бұрын
The issue with Suncorp is that its only limited to like 20 games per year for crowds over 30k, which isn't actually good for rectangular sports (and if you whack in international soccer games or if the brissy roar make it into finals or concerts and even big brissy nrl games) that will get eaten up quickly. That why i came up with the idea of making that new stadium retractable for both pitch and seating. Yeah i will agree keeping suncorp, but renovate it to like 30k and have bigger games played at the new stadium, also due to the land around Suncorp, its can't really be expanded any bigger than the 52k and also moot if they are restricted to 20 games over 30k.
