Train cars numbered 3010-3049 run in 5 car sets and will run on the A line. Train cars numbered 3050 and up run in 4 car sets and will run on the J and Z lines, and probably the C because the C train has 8 cars.

@A Jay 1)The R160s have smaller driver window frame than the R179s. 2)The headlight position is different(the R179s is more side-by-side) 3)Their electrical systems are also different in some way, thats why the two trains cannot be put together. 4)Their motor sounds are different (they are made by different companies) 5)The FIND display are different as well(especially when facing delays)

Excuse my ignorance, but, why is testing necessary? Aren't these just like the hundreds of other cars already running on the system on the (C, E, F, J, L, M, N, Q & R) lines? Weren't they built by the same builder that built the others? Aren't all the specifications the same? Is this just another excuse for the MTA to waste money and time testing instead of placing the cars in service to replace the remaining R32's on the C line?

Yancey Zimmerman While it may be the same builders and everything, the MTA has to test the train cars so that they'll know it will operate fine for passenger service and nothing serious will go wrong early on. Remember, the R179 had many early flaws before it even left the factory, many due to cracks and welding issues by the manufacturer. By doing these test, they are pretty much testing key components to make sure the train is safe for everyday passenger service.
