Making them a free addition at first level seems like a good idea, or simply tying them to character level so that they'll be available as a scaling feature of the race itself, can't wait to get this book!
@johnwendel7027 жыл бұрын
I like to think that some of the features are actually just part of the races progression of maturity. Like tieflings growing spikes may just be like a second state of puberty. It would also be fun to throw in a little bit of a roleplay aspect when you this happens to like maybe they become a little short tempered or emotionally distant for a little while

As a DM, I like to give my players a free feat at starting level, whatever level that might me to start a campaign, Arc, or one-shot.
@tonysladky89257 жыл бұрын
I was planning to do this next time I start a campaign. Feats are just too cool to not get at the start of the game. And if it makes the PCs more powerful, well then, I guess I just get to throw bigger challenges at them.
@mavoc30947 жыл бұрын
It might be interesting to consider limiting the pool of feats they can choose for free at level 1 to a list of feats not normally required for builds or highly valued as useful as to encourage playing less used feats. Also to prevent just picking based on 1 free ability score point, treat those feats as a half feat and allow them to take 2 half feats while ignoring the ability score bumps on them.
@ReverendRover7 жыл бұрын
Pretty much exactly what my group does when we start a new campaign. Each new character gets a feat that has no direct benefit to their class, exactly, and it's chosen by the DM. It's fun when something comes up that calls for it, and doesn't matter if it never does because the player hasn't wasted a feat choice on something useless.
@sclair28547 жыл бұрын
I do this atm, its great if you want to start at level 1 but cant stand how boring it is. I love seeing my players think about how much extra customization it offers their build

The extra ones are not official or AL legal, just to remind people. The extended feats are officially unofficial, like the Grung PC race. They're just something the team came up with to throw in as an addition as a preorder bonus.

I hope they’ll expand the range of racial feats in UA sometime in the future (although somehow I’m a bit pessimistic). I think the Volo’s races have tons of potential for feats.

@mavoc30947 жыл бұрын
Humans are the most played race by a large margin according to their survey, most likely due to the variant. I believe that part of the design of these feats was to help balance the races a bit more by giving the less used races better feats that the more used ones.
@Abelhawk7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think there will be human feats.
@odie44957 жыл бұрын
Mavoc Yeah but I don't seem why, they just get a feat and some skills. I run a varient human ranger who uses his basic ness to fit in. I think people should try more races though.

Mavoc I'd make the player swap it with a feat for the new race
@purplemagi24147 жыл бұрын
well, then you'd be a half-orc with a feat that you would not be able to use. the prerequisite for the race feats are that you be that race. if you don't fulfill the prerequisite, then you can't use the feat. sorry. if it were to happen in one of my games, i would let you swap the feat for another race feat for free. or just another feat if the races feats were undesirable.
@Bluecho46 жыл бұрын
If the DM is being fair, they'll let you use that Feat slot on something else, if the previous one no longer applies. Whether that's by giving you an ability score increase or a different Feat.

So this brings up the question of, if a DDAL player wants to use the feats, would this count as the +1? Or can they use the feats, but still use the Sword Coast?
@Harlizarrd7 жыл бұрын
If an AL player wants to use Booming Blade, SCAG is their +1. In a similar vein, if they choose to use a feat/spell from XGE, XGE count's as their +1. As such, XGE is the obvious better choice, generally.
@mavoc30947 жыл бұрын
Some of the SCAG features are going to be reprinted in XGE so you might get lucky and be able to just switch to XGE as your +1. AFAIK, 4 of the subclasses and some/all of the cantrips are being reprinted.

As cool as these are, I feel like 1. These should just happen naturally for the class as they level up. Maybe at higher than your usual lv1-5 to show growth & maturity And 2. I feel every race should get at least 1 of these, as some races kinda feel like they’re getting the shaft hardcore while others have a treasure trove of different options for nothing

Feats like this make the RAW method of trying feats and improvements to class level seem confusing and clumsy. I much prefer character level. I never understood the multiclassing tax in regards to feats and ability progression, and am considering removing the restriction in my games.
@lynx6557 жыл бұрын
Jason Shamblin It’s because the classes are front loaded, and players get most of their signature abilities in the classes first three levels. Multiclass characters can easily be much more powerful than their vanilla single class version of the same level. So you have to be careful that your players who single class don’t feel their characters are underwhelming in comparison. (That was why in earlier editions multiclass characters needed more xp to level up I guess, no such limit now)
@mavoc30947 жыл бұрын
I assume the OP means tying/binding instead of trying.
@adrenalineunlimited7 жыл бұрын
In my games, your character level is the level of your highest leveled class, and you don't get ability score increases as a result of leveling up in other classes. I also have the characters slowly notice their improvements over the course of gameplay, and they only get their next class level after they've achieved all the milestones associated with it. It feels a lot smoother to me that way, and it also makes for some great roleplay moments when a character is better at something than they expect to be because of all the practice they've put in. It also allows me to switch out class features on the fly to best specifically suit each character and make them feel like unique people, instead of Human Rogue 6, Paladin 4. It might be a little more work, but I think it's more fun. Plus, I think the guys who make the game would probably agree [:

I find that people over value the abilities of winged flight. I treat them as needing 5 times their height/length in wingspan space which means a medium humanoid would need 25 feet of width to use their wings. A creature's carrying capacity is while standing and using the skeletal structure to counter gravity while winged flight is using air pressure from the wings and should be far less capable. I consider winged flight carrying capacity to be 1/4 of normal capacity. I also give disadvantage on all ranged attacks and prevent long range weapon attacks without sharpshooter as winged flight is either moving via gliding or bobbing via a hover.
@purplemagi24147 жыл бұрын
found the adventurer's league player. jokes aside, why is it so broken? a tiefling can be a flying tiefling from sword coast adventurer's guide, and aaracocra are naturally able to fly.
@geordiebailey86487 жыл бұрын
Purple Magi, I believe that a lvl 1 character should not be able to defeat the Tarrasque. Yeah, I ban all those flying races from my table. Theres a reason that fly is a lvl 3 spell, which is less powerful than natural flight. The majority of enemies in the game can neither fly nor have a ranged attack. A flying PC with a bow is invincible as long as it cannot be reached. As a DM I then have two choices: 1. Every fight has an enemy with ranged attacks or flight, and all in indoor fights have ceilings only ten ft high, or 2. I play as normal and one player never takes damage. I'm cool with something like a flying Aasimar because it's only for one minute per day and ergo one fight, and I'm cool with wings of flying because it stops working the minute they touch down.
@drmann157 жыл бұрын
Well thanks for informing me that my elf is somehow inferior to your Aryan racial feat taker. It’s not enough that he is naturally proficient in longbows and can take the sharpshooter feat if he is true to his craft. No, he must instead give up an ASI to take the elf traits patch that didn’t make it into the core rules. Silly player, why are you wasting time roleplaying your character’s heritage? There’s a mechanic for that..
