The 2.0 bi-Turbo diesel is fine but it really would have been nice to have and option to upgrade to the 2.7 or 3.5 EcoBoost V6’s as an extra, I honestly think those engines would suite this bakkie’s performance characteristics a lot better, especially on the road. I know a diesel makes more sense in many ways, but if I were personally in the market for a Raptor I’d pay a good chunk extra to have an EcoBoost petrol under the hood, then at least when I pull up to the lights next to a base Fiesta 1.0 it won’t be able to smoke my R700k Raptor like it could at the moment....
@MIGerlag5 жыл бұрын
@@gingerjacaranda I do somewhat agree with you however, in its defence, the 1.0 EcoBoost Fiesta is a rocket-ship in its own right. Before my Fiesta ST I had the 1.0 EcoBoost and I frigen loved that car, when I first got it my whole family was shocked how quick it was for a 3-pot 1.0, we put it up against the best we had to see what it could do, it smoked my dad’s 4.0 V6 Hilux, his V6 Grand Cherokee and my moms 2010 BMW 323i which is also a 6-cylinder motor... Yes all three of those care are much heavier than a little Fiesta, but its still impressive. I was properly impressed with that little engine, it also sounded awesome, I almost prefer the sound of the 3-cylinder 1.0 to my 4-cylinder 1.6 ST. Ford knows how to make a properly good 3-pot motor, I’ve driven the VW Polo 1.0 TSI and its nowhere near as good as Ford’s engine, it sounds like trash in comparison and its refinement doesn’t even come close to the EcoBoost. Point being, the 1.0 Fiesta is not to be taken for granted. Having said that and getting back to the Raptor, that vehicle is 4x the price of a 1.0 Fiesta so it really should be able to hold its own against it in a straight line, however Ford isn’t targeting the straight line performance or 0-100 acceleration, the “performance” being referred with regards to its high-speed off-road, suspension and chassis capability. It’s not competing with a Fiesta ST or Focus ST for road handling or straight-line performance, because that not the sort of ‘performance’ aspect its best at. Think of it this way, if you had to think of a Fiesta doing what it can do at its very best you’d think of a tight, nimble responsive road focused pocket-rocket... Thus we got the ST model. If you had to think of what the Ranger could do best, you’d think off-road... Thus we get the Raptor. After saying all that you might be under the impression defending it’s lack of a proper performance engine, I’m not, I’m just saying I understand where Ford is coming from, 85% of buyers don’t actually care or would rather have the diesel for better fuel-efficiency anyway, and its fine if they want to sell it with that engine, but like I said originally, it shouldn’t have been the only engine option. With the 2.0 bi-turbo motor Ford should have just called it the Ranger Raptor and not branded it a ‘Ford Performance’ vehicle, then they should have had an optional upgraded model with a petrol V6 EcoBoost and branded that one with ‘Ford Performance’ livery, that would have made more sense in my opinion.
@quintusdupreez15 жыл бұрын

Greetings from Bergvliet, Cape Town. Great review, but as a blind person the good olf faithful Isuzu Kb 2.5/2.8 trubo diesel wins my heart. It isn't enormous like these modern Hilux and Ranger models which are tanks in my opinion and it isn't so high for you to battle to get in and out of but it's high enough to see the road ahead and it has a proper truck-like engine sound. If a bakkie has too much turbo and fan noise that makes it sound like a turbine then it's not a proper bakkie.

It won't sell many in the UK, because its reduced load capacity takes it out of ' dual purpose commercial vehicle' tax classification, which means business owners lose the ability to get full tax relief and to reclaim the VAT on it. Also the annual tax for private use will be much higher than normal for a pickup I believe. Similar tax situation in many other countries, which is why all these vehicles usually have a 1050Kg-plus payload. Also in many countries they really do need the 3.5 ton towing capacity, although that isn't such an issue for this particular model.

1. Bakkie is a South African word for Pickup. 2. It's still a car even if it's a "Truck". Few people would ever call this small thing a truck down here. Large Tractor Units (18 wheelers, I hear they call them on American TV shows) are what we consider trucks. But you know - Semantics, divided by a common language. 3. I believe it'll soon be. 4. Bonus numbered paragraph. Have a great year.

Greetings again from Bergvliet, Cape Town. I must admit that Ford definitely have come a long way in improving their turbo diesel engines for the Ranger because the 2.2l engines and now the new 2.0l engines sound more truck-like which is good, but like in my previous comment the good old faithful Isuzu Kb 250/280 turbo diesel wins my heart any day as a blind person with the Hilux 2.5d4d in second place. I must also admit that I'm not really that keen on the Hilux either because vertually everyone buys them which makes it really boring in my opinion but the 2.5d4d double cab still takes second place to the Isuzu Kb 250/280 turbo diesel because the engine might not sound as truck-like as the Kb but it does sound a lot better than the 3.0d4d.
