There is a new record breaking catfish in Ohio. The giant blue catfish was caught by 15 year-old high school sophomore Jaylynn Parker. The fish was caught while jug fishing with her family on the Ohio River. Once certified this could become the new state record for a blue catfish in Ohio. The potential new record caught by Jaylynn Caught was 101 pounds, and it was released alive after being weighed on certified scales by Ohio Department of Wildlife. This new record 101 pound catfish eclipses the previous Ohio blue catfish record of 96 pounds.

Jug fishing has even become a sport with tournaments being held. So, with that, as a president, it can go in the sporting category. However, I think it needs to be in a category of its own when being listed or recorded

@DieterMelhorn , I have done podcast interviews with Jug fishing tournament director on the sport and how it's done. Doing some jugging on our channel at times for entertainment purposes, I can tell ya, it not just about throwing out jugs. Scouting out locations, depths of fish columns, and so on you are looking for the same things you would be with rod and reel fishing. Definitely should not be placed in a trotline category.

At first i thought no she shouldnt get it, but after seeing that she respected the fish, and released it back alive and healthy, i hope she gets the record. She showed alot of good integrity, a good angler always protects their resorces. The big fish deserve to get released, theyre the elders of the waters. I've never jug fished and I could be wrong on this but leaving something out and coming back later to check something seems a bit lazy to the people that out the hours on end looking for these fish with a rod and reel in hand. My crazy self jumped in Wheeler lake in 30 degree weather at 8:30A.M. in early February over a 45lb blue during a tournament. All I have to say about that experience is that the fish without a doubt weighed 45lbs. I weighed it in on the tournament scales &, got my dip net back and fished the rest of the day. My partner didn’t even believe what happened until I already had the fish and the net and was trying to hand it to him over the side of the pontoon boat. Dedication.

in commercial fishing we wouldnt be able to claim it from a trotline catch. this im not sure just make it a separate category for jug fishing. also the big fish we get usually are kept alive and put in pay lakes around the area. we are mainly targeting smaller fish for the market anyways since restaurants and people want smaller fish. i just use 3/0 hooks and little tiny pieces of skipjack. or bluegill. and not really going for big fish either. there is a lot more big fish in these lakes then people think also.

I just feel like it shoiuldn't be eligible because the fish didn't have near the sporting chance as on rod and reel. If you really sit back and think about how many of these fish people hook every year that either break their line or get wrapped up in a snag or even get them right to the boat just for the hook to pop out. Jugs usually have a much heavier line on them than say your average rod and reel. I feel like maybe they shoould have records for each type of fishing maybe a noodling record, jugging record, and rod and reel. I don't know really keep us updated on the situation.

Too many "technicalities" in records! The fish was caught, period! It's a record! In Wisconsin last year, I believe, a new state record catfish was brought in and certified. But it was caught with a bow. Wisconsin has separate records for bow fishing, so it went in that category. The hook and line record remains, but a new bow fishing record now exists, which, until they became legal a few years ago to use on catfish, it did not even exist. But in my opinion, it don't matter how it was caught whether with a bow, hook and line or noodling, it's a record fish!

I want to see the video of the girl baiting, throwing and pulling that jug with fish on it in the boat by herself. As far as i know in order to be a record of any kind, the fish has to be caught completely by one person with no help from anyone at all. Correct me if I'm wrong. I have pulled fish in on jugs and a fish that size would take more than a little girl to pull it in. As far as being caught on a jug, it's a fish that was caught.

I know of many fish caught on trot lines and by snagging that would be a state record or in the top 10 of my state. A friend of mine caught and ate a channel that was 15 pounds heaver than the state record. They didn't even dream of attempting to certify it. I say if it is the biggest catfish ever in that state it’s the biggest catfish ever in that state. So to me that is the new record if the last was only 99 lbs then this 1 is bigger so that is a new record and just like the other 1 s don’t put down it was caught on jug. Now if that state wants to change how the record is then don’t use any of the old ones and start a new record book that says rod or jug or noodling or trotlin or limb line but so far this is the biggest (record) fish ever caught in that state

Great fish. I am torn on this one as far as "records" go. If its purely a size thing and its a "legally" caught fish then there is no queston its the biggest caught Blue Catfish in Ohio. On the other hand I personally do not consider jug fishing as "Sporting" as rod and reel fishing. I personally do not catfish with more then two rods when alone and never more than four no matter how many people I have on my boat. Most people use no more than six. I have personally witnessed jug fishermen putting out 40 or more and covering a mile or more of river, to me this is just not the same as rod and reel fishing. FYI last year alone I probably pulled out at least 20 "lost" jugs with three that still had fish attached, two barely alive and one long dead. I also pulled up a complete rod, reel and still alive 16# catfish. I don't really see how it matters that much unless award money is involved other then bragging rights and the State being able to claim the waters hold 100# catfish, but from a purely sportfishing point of view I believe it should have its own category or at least an asterisk.

The fish was caught, weighed and released. Good enough for me. I think some would change their minds if they were the ones who were being featured with the catch. Congratulations!

She caught that fish without the benefit of a flexible rod, a reel with drag, or 200 plus feet of line. In my opinion that's harder than rod and reel. The couldn't reel it in, she had to chase that jug down. A fish like that will pull a jug underwater and hold it out of sight for 15 or 20 minutes at a time and pull that jug around for hundreds of feet.
