NEW RELEASE North American Stihl ms661 vs Mr. Green's Insane-O S 660

I had heard back in the Spring that Stihl was planning on introducing the standard version ( manual carb & limited ignition coil) ms661 into North America. I had not know that the saw was available until ~ 3/4 weeks ago. It has been lost in all the rhetoric/hype surrounding the release of the ms500i. Stihl released the standard version MS661 into America just a couple weeks prior to the 500i.
Not really a fair match up here, I know. Bone stock 661. But, the 660 is running really low on the pipe - under 13,000 rpms. This saw has a new crank, bearings, seals, etc. and I did not want to push it to much initially since it only has a few heat cycles on it. About the same can be said for the 661.
It is easy to see the differential in low end grunt through this illustration as we watch the 660 throwing the log around like it's a ragdoll . The 660 would have been another ½ to 1 second faster, both ways had the "test subject" been tied down.
Timed runs:
661 at 12,960 went 7.20 down and 6.93 up
660 at 12,960 went 5.94 down and 6.13 up.
As mentioned, a few slight tweaks internally on the 660 from the original SawShop Makeover from several years ago. I'm well pleased on the performance of the Insane-O S version 660., With anyluck Mr. Green will be "liken" it as well.

Matt hi. Lucky you. I have posted many videos showing the 395 platform handily taking the 660 and or 661s when all things internal are equal. Of the current flock, and provided all the candidates are in oem condition, the 395s are the long bar saws which also means they are the most powerful in zipped form. That my take on it anyway, lol. Stepp of Faith - I posted a video about 1 1/2 years ago from what I remember. The 661s don't win if the same amount of work is done to both saws. To a degree you can even do less work the the 395s and they will still win. I you are wanting owend grunt it's the 395 all the way. Thanks for watching.

Give me a 661 over a 660 and give me a 500i over a 661 apart from the 661 when they first came out until they sorted out a few issues stihl dont make saws that are worse than the model before

While I love my 500i in most respects, the 200 was way better IMHO than the 201, especially with the M-Tronic issues when they first came out. And there is something to be said for simpler systems when you have a tool in all those chips and dust etc.

Obviously the tuning of the M-tronic engine should be simple. -just start it and keep it running on idle 30-60 sec and then run it on full throttle until it runs smooth... I was advised not to run with a less than 25 inch sword to avoid over revving on the 661!

Ordered mine in Aug and came in the end of sept. Great saw! I posted in fb stihl owners group sept 25, was told by my dealer it was needed for the fire line with high ambient temps causing starting and other problems with the m-tronic version.

May I ask you a question?. Around here they have non ethanol gas- 87 octane but the Stihl directions say use 89 octane, which contains ethanol. Would the 87 octane be safe?. I store fuel for emergency storms etc through the winter. Thank you in advance for your reply, and thank you for the great videos.

I run around 98 or 100 octane. But my saws are in a pretty high state of tune. I've never seen where a saw or any other internal combustion type engine "complained" when getting a higher octane fuel. Lace the non-ethonal gas with boost if you want. I run Turbo 108. No lead. I'd still add some Stabil to the fuel if leaving it sit for extended periods of time. Agitate the gas periodically doesn't hurt either. Thanks for watching

@@CowboyAxe get the Turbo 108. Lucas is not ideal. States right on the container not for 2-cycle use. I called them 15 or 17 years ago and talked to a tech person trying to find out why. She said it increased the cylinder Temps. She couldn't tell me how much the temperature increase was though. I thought that to be lame considering the MASSIVE ad campaign that company runs touting how awesome their oils are. I was unimpressed with that conversation in all reality. I've seen the internals after running Lucas 2-cycle "synthetic". Unimpressed there as well. The non lead NOS is good as well. About twice the cost of the Turbo 108. Thanks for watching.

And that should be fine, I just bought an ms661 and I waited a long time to get it and with our taxes up here- Newfoundland Canada, it was a good chunk of change, but I have 21 acres to clear later on my own property. Here in the UK as an employee I am subjected to a rudimentary v.w.f check every two years and have been made to take part in annual exposure checks during which I have to fill in an exposure sheet for a week to asses how much vib' I'm being subjected to. Throughout Europe a great deal of attention is being paid to vibration and figures (metres/sec, 500i=4.2 and 661=6.9, though both at those levels have 3.7 hour working exposure at cutting rpm) at the handles are available on line. I think soft saws are going to be the future with Scandi designed machines. Here in the UK we've had the 500's for quite some time and I haven't seen any fall apart at the vibe bushes, neither has there been any talk on our arb' forums. 660 is a monster saw compared to the stock 661. 660 makes a good milling saw too. With more low end grunt, it would be even better.
