I LOVE that WT 8 year bottle - it has this butterscotch type note for me - and I dig your description of the earthiness which i generally gravitate towards. I want that darn 7 year Rye they realized so bad.....

@@bourbonbill btw - I went to Sagamore this morning to pick up my Vino De Naranja and Manhattan finish bottles. I'm going off your glowing recommendation of the Naranja - but I love ALL the sagamore products.

Just picked up a NR single barrel pick 5yr, can’t wait to open. The 8 year would make a nice addition

Let me know what you think of it. The 8 is pretty good I’m excited for what’s to come from them
@inkynate93723 ай бұрын
I believe New Riff's barrel entry proof is generally 110 and most sibs I"ve seen come out even lower. Have a good one open right now that's only 103.6. That said I 100% agree the 8yr would be better if they didn't cut it.

Ahh okay maybe I was thinking something else being in the 120 range

Bro! Just got a bottle today. Under $65 smackers with a discount code to boot. Cracked it and immediately pourer other 100 proof bourbons to try next to it: New Riff 4 year BiB, Remus Repeal Reserve VI, Knob Creek 18 and even splurged with some Wild Turkey 12. The New Riff easily beat its younger BiB shelfer (nice but basic and lacking depth) and the Remus (sweet tea but drinks thin). It hangs right in there with the KC18 and WT12, reason being is that the New Riff 8 has that fruit (lightly dusted cinnamon and cocoa powder ripe peach) note that the legacy bottles dont bring. Also seems hard to come by, the two stores I know that got it up in Massachusetts only got a case (6 bottles) each.

That’s awesome. Yeah it’s good stuff. Remus 6 was pretty disappointing stuff not surprised by that lol

Haha well you know I’m a cheap bastard so I just never tried it I feared it would taste young like Penelope but the 8yr intrigued me and now I’m a fan lol

Great video. I wonder if the “Craft tax” is really still a factor in 2024 if I think about it. There’s a huge influx of craft brands that offer decent pricing on their whiskey. This isn’t the case for all, but JW Kelly for ex. out of Chattanooga does a 5,6,8 year blend for 35 bucks. Meanwhile legacy brands have a hike in their price tags. (Looking at you Campari) I think “craft” whiskey is picking up a lot more speed in the market than most people realize.
@bourbonbill3 ай бұрын
Yeah its an interesting point with some legacy distilleries "cough cough wild turkey" pricing some special bottles to the moon its allowed craft distilleries to put out really good stuff and the pricing not seem horrible

The only Wilderness Trail I've had is my store pick rye with a 60-20-20 mash bill that is very good, and I'm not a rye guy!

Oh man the store pick ryes are killer I have a wilderness trial 6.5yr rye pick that’s phenomenal

Without trying both I need to vote New Riff BiB. Ben Halliday BiB is a good pour but New Riff SiB is only 4 years old and it’s a must have for me. NR at 8 years has to be just as good IMO. NR SiB rye is a great pour as well and highly recommend that one also. Great video and entertainment as usual. 👍👍

I have never tired their rye myself so maybe I need to. I hear they are doing an 8yr rye this year as well

I've had three different New Riff SiB Bourbons and was impressed with them all -- *especially* for being only four years old. Some other channel said the New Riff 8 Year is a noticeable step up from the SiBs! How are the four-year-old New Riffs not youthful? Anyone know if New Riff heat cycles?
@bourbonbill3 ай бұрын
@@Best_Served_Neat_On_IceI don’t know if they heat cycle but there are several craft distilleries putting out good whiskey at younger ages that doesn’t taste like grass and hay
@javieracosta34393 ай бұрын
They go in very low into the barrel. New Riff proofs down the distillate to 105 proof before filling their barrels. Water is more soluble than alcohol with wood sugars or something. Wild Turkey does 115, Jim Beam is 120 and Barton 1792 enters at 125. But going in that low sorta hurts their bottom line as the more you water down your white dog, you have to buy more barrels to fill. The saving grace is the bourbon tastes more mature at that younger age. Fred Minnick did a great intro about barrel entry proof in a recent Michter's review. Go check it out!

3:39 First and foremost, thanks for correctly pronouncing Chattanooga as "chadda-nooga". As a Chattanoogan myself, it hurts my ears when I hear "Chat'uh-nooga" with the hard CHAT.

I really don’t like the Wilderness Trail bourbon or rye I’ve tried. Smells like Indian food (which I like but don’t want in my whiskey). Just isn’t for me.
