I'm a liberal Democrat and two years ago I moved from one of those hip, cool, cultural cities to a small, rural farming town in the mountains of western North Carolina. I absolutely love it. I don't miss the traffic, crowds, inflated prices and oh so cool hipsters. I've found my like-minded peeps, retired hippies, just regular down to earth folks, and artisans and craftspeople. I don't miss the bright lights, hip city at all.

It amazes me that people are finally starting to get it, including Bill Maher. This has been a huge problem for decades and only growing. Most of the good jobs are only in certain areas. Many people move into these areas and the housing and rent prices skyrocket, making it a pay check to pay check existence. If the jobs were spread apart we wouldn't have the problems of extremely high costs of living.
@GrassPossum
@GrassPossum 4 жыл бұрын
Mate there are fewer good jobs in those areas and Bill Maher is a very wealthy privileged person whose ignorance of orinary people and their lives is showing here. For someone who is not an American and extremely glad of it, I found watchjing this arrogant uninformed wanker to be repulsive. He is roundly insulting a lot of people. Many of whom are far smarter andplenty also who are better educated than he is. his simplistic outlook assumes that there is enough for everyone to have what he describes when it is not so, and only 1% of the population would have anything like what he describes and the educated percentage as such will not by any means be all Progressive or Liberal voters. Furthermore not all uneducated and backwards people are religious and not all religious people are unedducated and backward. He is the winner in a system which keeps the majority down. he is in no positionto pass judgement on the rest of that system. Just as the USA remains rich by looting the world and keeping much of it in chaos and poverty so too the 'elites' in the USA maintain their position on the back of keeping the majority poor and fearful.

Here's the thing, those big companies companies in thriving fields like tech are also competing for skilled workers who want to live in the areas that have the amenities and (for lack of a better term) "cool stuff" Bill mentioned and most of that needs a certain population density (and all around critical mass) in order to thrive. It's not as easy as saying "spread out", when the people who can afford it actually want (for the most part) to be clustered in those few hip areas.

Meritocracy and Capitalism absolutely have their merits. I definitively believe that. BUT.....then there's Jeff Bezos. I am 100% convinced there is not a single human being alive, or who has ever lived, or ever will live....who deserves or has "earned" a BILLION DOLLARS. That's absurd. That's impossible. A human being cannot do ANYTHING to deserve THAT. And this guy...has over 200 times that. At that point, I'm sorry....but you are in fact a sociopath. No human being deserves or is capable of earning that much wealth. You are simply an extreme outlier at that point....that somehow concocted a situation in which you were able to amass orders of magnitude more wealth than you could possibly earn in thousands of lifetimes. And we're supposed to feel excited for you getting to go to space? Neato. Have fun while you can Jeff. Because if you and people like you keep this shit up.....given history, we all know how this ends. Poor desperate hungry people can and will and have killed people like you in order to......you know.....survive. The gross thing is that I get the distinct impression Jeff feels zero shame or empathy. He probably doesn't even think about it. He doesn't understand how gross he is as a human being. I think it's our job, the other 99.9999999% of us.....to get him to understand how gross he is. I just hope we're up to the task, because right now....we're pretty goddamn distracted from reality.

this is a function of choosing the right degree, or taking a vocational college/apprenticeship instead: it annoys me no end when a youngster takes four years of art history and expects to work anywhere but a metropolis - even as a teacher their qualifications would be limited to the large centers because the market for students in these non-producer humanities areas is small. it's not that they're unimportant it's that we need only one for every hundred hundred thousand welders, mechanics, service technicians. nice work if you can get it

In Southeast Kentucky we have blacks, Asian, Arab doctors. Our rural county with two small towns has 3 Mexican restaurants. They're owned by Mexicans that came here almost 20 years ago. The coal mining industry brought blacks, Italians here for jobs a hundred years ago. We do need industry now that the government is shutting down the mines. It has hurt the area. Stores are closing. A Chinese woman that owned a restaurant here for years has had fund raisers to help children of the laid off workers. Back in the past people would go to Detroit, Ft.Wayne, Cincinnati, or other northern states to work when the mines would slow down. There's no where now to go. That trade agreement that took the factories over seas has hurt everyone. I know Bill will never read this. I just want people to know how the other three-fourths live. The Elites have no idea. Your wrong PJ. Go look at what happened in Monroe LA when Centurylink built their new headquarters and was forced to bring in so many jobs. Transplants moved there. Housing cost sky rocketed way more than anything would have in NY from a cost difference and once the two years were up people got out of there ASAP. Now inflated housing costs are dropping and people are losing money. It is not always good for some of the smaller communities.

ON T.V ... it's hard to believe the right still have common sense people when you hear stuff like that.

Bill's really on to something here. I grew up in the south. Admittedly, it WAS one of the more progressive parts, where sheets came with pleasing pastel patterns, exclusively used to cover matresses, BUT, it WAS the south nonetheless. Seemingly overnight, DIVERSITY hit us HARD! Mexican and Chinese restaurants sprang up! There was EVEN a Thai restaurant. And then, there were JEWS among us. Next thing you know, there was live theater and BOOK STORES! And before we knew it, we lost our identity as card-carrying hayseeds entirely. Some of us even eschewed our distinctive, traditional regional accent...TRAGIC! BUT! I have to admit the conversation and the cuisine are much improved. :))

Rich cities also have some of the poorest people on the planet. The ghettos of Brooklyn, Detroit, Baltimore, etc. Are some of the poorest places in the country and to some peoples surprise the cities in the south and midwest are better off than people.actually think. They just look at wealth and dont realize that usually a.very.small percentage of people actually hold that wealth.

It's so true. 25000 high paying jobs won't help us in NYC. It'll drive cost of living through the roof to the sky and outer space, because our cost of living is already through the roof. We're already overtaxed and overcrowded. Many people in NYC can't afford to live here anymore. They're living in the subway and on the streets. Everyday taking the subway, there're multiple people begging for food and money. Multiple cars are occupied by homeless people. We as residents pay a lot of taxes. It's utterly offensive when the biggest company in the world comes here and pays no tax. Amazon should go somewhere else where the people can benefit from them, and Amazon should not extort any towns or cities for handouts. Google, not that it's any better than Amazon, has announced plans to invest billions in NYC and to hire up to 12000 people and Google does that without asking for any handouts. Screw you Amazon.

Technically, it's not a handout, since all the wealth to be taxed will be created by Amazon itself. A tax break just means the city will take a lesser portion of that additional wealth. So even if the city takes zero, it's still not "spending" anything on the business, and it's still a net benefit in the additional number of people who'll have paychecks and more money to spend and be taxed in that area. The subsidies we give to certain farmers and other businesses like City Bank, Boeing, and even Google, _that's_ a handout, because the government takes money from the taxpayer and gives it to the business, aka corporate welfare. And you're not mistaken in feeling overtaxed. New York is the #1 highest-taxing state in the nation (per capita). California's #3. But you guys like Democratic policies and heavy government involvement and programs, and that's their cost. And de Blasio isn't done yet: www.nytimes.com/2019/01/10/nyregion/bill-de-blasio-state-of-city.html
