Oh well, when people treat politics like entertainment (and they obviously do!), it's no surprise the main feature of a successful politician is - to be an entertainer. Sad. This world is completely upside-down. "Comedians" like Bill (and many others) obviously do more politics than the politicians do. Those, in turn, do more fun - we only can laugh at them, though we should rather cry realizing what the job they are paid for is. From all taxpayers' money - this is for killing. And yes, Billy is right; neither Rock nor Matthew can fix this mess. Pls, stay in your field, gentlemen; you are good in that one. If a top brain surgeon goes playing golf in which he is an average, that's minor; he can do it for fun and relax from a stressful job; that's understandable, nothing wrong with that. And if he by chance is over an average, that's a bonus. But I guess nobody will ask Tiger Woods to perform brain surgery on their kid just because he is a top golf player and also has some "experience" with the hospital, right...? So, we should really stop treat politics/politicians like an entertainment

Also, to the extent that politicians are corrupt or separated from the people, perhaps that's a problem is the system, not the individuals. Any new individual will be infected by the same system. What you need isn't a saviour, it's significant reform to the system, at the very least. Money out of politics, and politics out of the voting system.

The man running for president on the other hand has a massive organization who's only purpose is to get him elected. Just look at the campaign budget for the presidential race. It's not the best man, or woman, who wins, they likely don't even make it to the preliminaries. It is pure luck if a competent president actually gets elected. I don't know. China has a competent government and look what they've got. 490 million people forced out of their bucolic poverty-ridden lifestyle in the last two decades into a world of modern amenities like electricity and indoor plumbing. Forcing people to adhere to policies that practically eliminated COVID within the country within two months of discovery, making people navigate life in a normal economy and health environment. Coercing customers into purchasing electric rather than internal combustion engines through the selective pricing of license plates and converting almost all public transit vehicles to electric. Manipulating nature so that rice can grow in briny and highly alkaline soil and pushing back the man-made desert ecosystems by developing planting methods that hold down the shifting sands so that the soil can absorb the rainfall and support plant life. Building the most comprehensive road and rail infrastructure in the world practically overnight. Fourteen percent of Chinese are dissatisfied with their government. Oops, that was 2003, but still, seven percent of Chinese were dissatisfied with their government according to a Harvard survey taken before China's COVID response embarrassed the rest of the world with its effectiveness. Are you sure you want competence in government? It could change everything.

@@alanfriesen9837 Governing a nation is a very difficult balancing act. I was born and lived in Japan till 26years of age. During my childhood and young adulthood I saw how effective semi socialistic practice of governance after losing almost everything in The world war 2. there were actually many bad apples left over from old regime but still Japan made it back to world stage in shortest time. That's what PRC is doing over last several decades and the only way to make it successful for the whole nation, a one huge country is by force if it has to implement new and effective policies. Democracy can't do that because all the infighting that come from all directions and it will take forever for anything to be done whils tax money is drained by politicians into their pockets. Then there's also entanglement with death merchants who wouldn't want world peace. I'm very pessimistic that homo sapiens won't survive much beyond next few hundred years. We'll self destruct.

@alanfriesen9837 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikiohirata9627 I am very much in agreement with you. I wouldn't say that democracy can't do these things, but I think your arguments for why it is exceedingly difficult are quite strong. The strides made by the Japanese after World War Two were amazing in their own right and pretty much accomplished under a single, very conservative, political party. Government was adept at distributed resources to target industries controlled by old industrial families who committed to following the national game plan. Peoples' basic needs were taken care of (though from what I understand local level bureaucratic red tape was crazy) and in exchange the people were expected to, and did, support the government and its initiatives. This was much more efficient than the lassaiz-faire approach of the United States and the European allies (although to a certain extent the same thing occurred in West Germany). I'm more optimistic about our long-term survival, though that's not to say that I think the days of all out war are entirely behind us. I never advocate for war, too many people are destroyed, but sometimes it clears the field, not that I think this is a good enough argument to go there.

Not necessarily professional politicians, but people who understand government. For example, people with legal backgrounds often have an education tailored around understanding the law and government. Those that then move into politics often come from real world experience that ranges from court room matters to government assistance to corporate advice, all of which would be useful when governing. For example, I worked for years in immigration. I can tell you first hand that most people have no idea how complicated the system is or how it works. Also, having worked in immigration, I have a level of empathy that comes from meeting people as individuals and not as statistics. My point, and I think his, is that there are people out there with the right education and experiences to be capable and effective leaders. Being “popular” might get you the vote, but it doesn’t inherently make you qualified for the job. Just a thought. I do agree with you that we need limits on career politicians along with many other reforms.
