A couple years ago, when I just move to this country (I'm from Mexico) I was in a situation when another hispanic guy tried to disrespect me on the street and all the others guys inmediatelly stopped him and made him apologize. In my country it is so common to be harasser everywhere since you are a little girl that I felt so... weird, nobody ever stood for me. So I told my husband, he is american, and he told me "well, why that guy behaved like a counstruction worker from the 70s". It was the first time I realized this society has progressed a lot. I really don't get that people that cries saying everything is worst when obviously is not, trust me, I saw how things were when I studied american history for my citizenship exam. And definitely it has progressed a lot if we compare with my country or other countries. But I won't get there. My point that probably nobody is going to read is, dear american people, it may not be perfect but you have achieved a lot, there is a reason why so many people want to come to this country. Give your self more credit, because you deserve it and you are on the right path. Keep with the good work.

👍👍👍💞🗽 My friend came from Communist Albania...FLED Albania via the German Embassy in Tirana with thousands in 1990. He told me about Enver Hoxha and his growing up...hes 57 now....Everyone was suspicious of everyone...the 'police' would question you if you weren't a member of Communist party..if you weren't involved outright in support of the party, which he was not you were followed...arrested sometimes(he was arrested and beaten twice...and told to watch neighbors...AND report family...against The Party....someone he knew escaped and he was beaten half to death to get information...he had none....) He stayed in Germany about year and half then to America...after total 7 years he got his citizenship and still says it was the best day in his life. Like you..he had to study American History(oh, the 1st question he was asked when he applied is "Are you or any member of your family a member of the Communist party....we talked about that recently and wondered if that is still a question when coming to America, or also if it's only if you're coming from a country with history of communism.....we wonder often because He sees things happening here in US very similar to communism..Especially "cancel culture" in society amongst citizens and they way people are so eager to gang up on and mob someone in dissent to the Left ideology...esp social media users who post personal private info of those they want taken down and so many people share that post. And also the News Media here that so often is propagated to the left and outwardly vilifies dissent...the division anger and the hunt....just like Albania when he grew up). He knows alot of history and learned about america, like you, for his citizenship...he probably knows more than most americans! I was glad to come across your post and to hear the proof that things have changed here immensely over the decades and that living here is so much better than many many countries where citizens do not have the freedoms and rights built into the law of this land. I personally think also some of our politicians seriously just need therapy for their own set of personal traumas...they seem to be taking their hurt and angry emotions out on an entire country. Glad you are here in America! Hope you and your husband and families are well and good! 💫🗽🙏

Thank U so much about sharing your love & respect for our wonderful country- America! When other Americans have never experienced other countries or styles of government, they have no concept of how we have progressed - things that were not right & just have always been improved & written into law to protect everyone from dictatorship & tyranny. That why I live america.. Our judai/ Christian roots have always corrected mistakes. This is in compared to governments who for power, money, & status, has enslaved people forever, without conscience. Look at Castro, Chavex, Hammas, Mao, Venezuela, the Taliban, Islam terrorist, socialism, Soviet & Chinese Communist of today's world.. Our Americans have gotten so use to freedom that they have no idea how the rest of the World lives . PLEASE all of those foreign IMMIGRANTS WHO HAVE LEGALLY BECOME AN AMERICAN CITIZEN, Don't be afraid to talk to Americans that disrespect america. -especially our young people- tell them what it was like in tryanny. & tell them about the honorable qualities of America. We are starting to lose our freedom.

@@spz598 I grew up in a country controlled by ultra-conservative capitalists and it was in many ways similar. Being seen to be opposed to the government could get you into trouble, even killed. Everything was censored. The government’s propaganda was taught in schools. I have a Swiss friend who gets followed and harassed by the police when he is in Switzerland, because he fits a profile they have for a drug user. And of persecution of such people is still rampant in the US. There were even organisations like DARE that tried to get children to snitch on their parents.

@@kathrynratenski-harrison4635 China’s certainly not communist. If they ever were they have not been for decades. The Soviet Union wasn’t either. Even Lenin abandoned the core tenets of communism. Oh you have no idea what others are going through. So thank God you feel much better. Others still face deep racism and bigotry. The problem Why monumental changes will never make is, because when some feel comfortable they forgot the issues that are still there. If we show up to the polls and vote in politicians who share our values and not be fool. Look at what's going on now. They are voting in GOP politicians to restrict voters right in the minority communities and these people vote like minded people with one voice. Dems win the popular vote and cannot make changes as they cannot win enough seats in local, states and federal gov. The minority party has the most power. Think about that when u are agreeing that your life is better. Most of us are one pull over from getting rough up, shot or kill. Don't make your misguided comfort fool u. we need to show up for all elections,. School board, local, state and Federal. The only people I've heard who seem to have anything close to "the answers" are non-partisan experts who aren't afraid to speak openly about what they know and have enough character to be intellectually honest without concern for power or social points. The 2 parties in the USA are just mass manipulation machines that have been escalating rhetoric for so long that nobody remembers what hyperbole even means anymore. Now we have the nonsensical "culture wars" in full swing and it's all based on parodies, exaggerations and lies. It's really as if the country has been split between two cults and the vast majority of people are brainwashed. In reality, most people are too scared to think for themselves or speak their mind because of ostracization from friends and family, losing their job or becoming a total social pariah. @Gerald DeCaire Why yes, I do. Do you know what else didn’t exists in that era? Employee provided health care, minimum wage, and a host of other regulation that makes labor more expensive. Materials were cheaper for many of the same reasons. Property values are quite literally tied to inflation. That’s the cost of progress. That’s the cost of increasing the standard of living. Cheap labor and materials are a thing of the past. They died with minimum wage crusades and mandatory benefits. They died with Government oversight and regulatory compliance costs. Grandmas house was built with labor that would be illegal today, with materials that helped poison the rivers and deforest the west. You have no room to complain now.

We're a white middle-class liberal family in UK. We raised our kids to be liberals too. My daughter who is in her final year at university in London came home at term-end with her new boyfriend. "It's serious, I think", I said to my wife before they arrived. Oh my god was my silent reaction when they got out of the car. She had brought home a white boy! Whispered conversations out of earshot, furtive looks, though we tried to make the young man feel as welcome as we could, I could sense his discomfiture. After he had left to go back to his parents the rows and the recriminations began. "What on earth do you think you're doing", I asked her. "Why couldn't you bring home a good black boy", said my wife tearfully. "Oh the shame", I exclaimed, holding my head in my hands whilst wringing them, "Think how this will look. What will the neighbours think, I implored my daughter" "You're just so square and old-fashioned", retorted our daughter. "What will they say, at the 'New Socialists' club", I entreated. "Where did we go wrong!", I shouted as my daughter ran out of the room. My wife was now sobbing hysterically, her mascara creating a black, miniature Nile Delta on each of her cheeks and, strangely, symmetrical, too.

I'm a White guy in my 70s. When I was in elementary school in Alabama, there were "white" and "colored" drinking fountains. The Black kids swam in the school pool only on Thurs and Fri (the pool was drained and re-filled over the weekend). When we'd get on the school bus, the driver would say "black to the back". At the time, I was a little kid and none of this seemed wrong. But my Mom (White) explained that it was and that it would change. My Father, a jet fighter pilot, flew B-17s in Europe during WWII. He said the best fighter support they had were the Red Tails--the all-Black Tuskegee Airmen flying the new P-51. But when the war was over, most of these guys who wanted to stay in the Air Force were taken off flying status. And once back in the States, many couldn't eat at the same lunch counter as White folks. My Father told me that this was wrong, and that it would change. The change came about during my lifetime. So come on, progressives, get some perspective.

This is what gives me hope for the 2022 midterms. That although much progress comes very gradually there are those times when it seems to come in a blink of an eye. It comes when the public wakes to undeniable evidence that something is so bad or so wrong or so unhealthy it has to change. Once it was cigarettes. And once the lies and fraud that were perpetrated by the industry were revealed for all to see and the rates of lung cancer were increasing even in those who were only exposed to second hand smoke, the zeitgeist changed almost overnight and the laws needed to make it official were passed. Too many young people still smoke but we as a society have made it a very expensive chore to find any public place or rented space to do it. And more kids are just saying no. I predict the same is going to happen with the midterms in November. If the Republicans think they're going to walk away with the midterms they'd better have a back-up plan because the American public in force will be out to retire you. And the reason above every other good reason to do it will be GUNS! How high did you think the body count could go before the public would just put their foot down at the ballot box? Oh, it never would because it's been going on for decades and they never have? Well, welcome to the 21st Century. Hell hath no fury like a generation of kids and their parents and their friends and just about every sane rational American who by November will have personally experienced the loss of someone close or someone they know to gun violence. And we know who to blame.

@@cliftt teenagers *always* wanted everything now. I know I did. Exactly for the reason you point out. And it's the whole point of being a teenager / in your 20s. Because once you hit 40+, most people are too tired or busy to push for change. We'd grow complacent as a society if it wasn't for every new generation saying "it's not good enough". We should teach them more about how far we've come, though, because progress is more motivating. Imagine you were 20 now. You might have heard a bit about Dubya as a president from your parents, then grown up with Obama, then seen the US regress under Trump. *Of course* it will feel like everything is going to shit. You would not feel like it was a temporary setback that is common in history. It's usually 2 steps forward, 1 step back. As long as the overall trend is more steps forward than back, we make progress. But if you're born during forward and now see the step back and don't look at the overall history, it will make you feel like we're going backwards.
