Could you name a few examples where civil rights have been cut because of an immigrant influence on politics? The only examples of civil rights being cut back in recent times I can think of are by the xenophobes, not by the immigrants. That's not to say that I don't oppose the antisemitism, sexism and homophobia that's running rampant in many immigrant communities but again, that's more of a commonality with our good ol' homegrown reactionaries in Europe than a dividing line and separation is making the problem worse, not better.

I would agree with this but the are two more broader reasons. One is that Republicans love an unapologetic strongman. They love for someone to take control and disregard all nuance, reasonability or compassion. They love to feel like they are following a perfect leader. Putin is like that and so is Trump. Second, Russia has decided that it will be the white country that resists the LGBT rights movement. Don't want to start race argument, but... Russia is not staying white either. Population is shrinking. Natural population growth has been in negative numbers for almost 30 years now, with slight positive spike around 2012 (an echo of post world war 2 baby boom). The only thing that keeps population close to 0% change is the influx of middle-Asian workers and birth rates in Chechnya-Dagestan region, who are not white by neo-nazis standards regardless of the fact that they are literally Caucasians :) Nationalistic views could be sensed in the air though. I'm a fan of Bill, but he's wrong here. While Russia is indeed white, it's quite diverse in other areas - huge share of Muslims, multiple Asian and far-east ethnicities are a natural part of our population. The forced integration of Soviet times did indeed work after all, as well as forced gender equality. So yeah, GOP might like Russian authoritarianism, fake religiousness and the hate for sexual minorities - but racism in Russia is rare and punished by authorities.

Societal Harmony my ass. Korea is the most unhappy and dissatisfied country in the developed world (look it up in the OECD statistics), and Japan isn't far from it. The social pressure in those countries, the long work hours and strict social hierarchies create depression, loneliness and suicide and it doesn't even make them more productive. Both countries still haven't recovered from the crises of the 90s and their work productivity is far lower than for example the Germans'. Youngsters in those countries are actually working on farms in the US picking cones or learning simple trades, just so they don't have to go through the hell that is their education system. Now of course I don't think immigration would fix that, but it's all symptoms of a very inhumane society and a deadlocked way of life. And then come the many problems regarding skills shortage and shrinking demographics, where immigration would actually help the economy a lot.
