Up until a few years ago, Pro Cyclists almost exclusively used tubular tyres. They're complicated, messy, and impractical. However, they were the only tyre option that could be ridden after getting a puncture: Until now! Vittoria have just unveiled their latest in tyre tech - Airliners. These lightweight foam inserts make tubeless tyres a much more viable option for pros and amateurs alike! Want to know more? In this video, Si takes a first look!

Yesterday I rode on my bike over a few thorny branches along the road. Immediately got off the bike and removed around 6 or 7 thorns stuck to both tires. Sealant fixed all punctures instantly. Haven't had a flat since April 2019 when I got my bike with tubeless system.

I started as a gravel boy, went tubeless after a month. Had 2 months of pain understanding the tubeless and using the right tyres, bedding it.. A year after that I changed my gravel tyres and saw all the holes if filled after no flats and realised how many days I would have been changing tyres in the woods and on the side of the road. I went tubeless on the road bike and its been faster at lower pressures and flat free.. It's a learning curve that with the right advice is a game changer. Lots of advice on online including gcn. Never doing tubes again
@KandiKlover
@KandiKlover 3 жыл бұрын
@@carlosbarrios2203 that’s an idiotic delusion. You can get same type of sealant for tube and it works better and easier to field swap when something too wide for the sealant to clot hits your tire and easier to swap a tire out when needed. Typical stupid wannabe team racers. 🤣

This is pretty great technology for a variety or reason, be it training, commuting, racing, or even just safety descending. Given its weight, it really doesn't matter that it is there and will allow previously "unreliable" low rolling resistant tyres to be used for more utilitarian applications, because even if they do puncture, you can still get home/work/wherever. Given there only 20 something grams, which is about 10% the weight of a good tyre, that is well worth it, even if it just means you don't have to bring a pump/CO2 and tube on your training/causal rides because you can get home anyway.
@MattSwain1
@MattSwain1 3 жыл бұрын
Sold! I’d think they’re a very appealing option for anyone with an expensive set of wheels that they’d like to protect in the event of a puncture... if you’ve spent many hundreds (or more) on the wheels then the kit doesn’t look so pricey

I came across this video recently and just wanted to say thank you. This piece of kit is just what I needed to get back to riding my recumbent. I own a Bacchetta Corsa two-wheel recumbent bike. Unfortunately, when the skinny road tires flat out in the front wheel…the rim makes contact. On a regular bike…you can usually shift your body weight to prevent getting dumped. The recumbent solely depends on steering for balance. Once the rim hits the asphalt…it skates any direction it pleases…and in under a second you go splat. Being on anti-platelet drugs…this means a lot of bleeding. So, I haven’t ridden this particular bike in a very long time. Now, with the Air-Liners installed…I get this bike back in the rotation. It’s a blast to ride…and I am now confident that there won’t be any reason to get dumped on the ground if I flat out.

I’ve been riding tubeless for about six years on Reynolds 62mm Strike rims coupled Bontrager AW2 tires lately, mostly because of the AW for added flat protection but they’re not lightest or the smoothest ride by far. I look forward to trying the Airliners with a lighter and more supple tire and see that enhances my ride.

Vittoria just made an already complicated messy job with tubeless even harder and messier. If your swapping out training tires with racing tires, you now have to deal with a messy liner that’ll be dripping sealant everywhere, a tool to compress the tire to ensure that the insides stick to itself, and now you need a tool to do it because it wasn’t hard enough to install and uninstall tubeless. Game changer

I thought the same thing about Cushcore initially, and it was a faff when I first tried it. Same with regular tubeless honestly. Now I don't even think of it. Also, I suspect that with a worn/stretched tire a bit it will be easy enough to remove without the bead breaker tool. It will probably only be necessary for weak hands or new/tight tires.

Yes, got mine on order expecting them tomorrow. I started with tubeless last year but switched back to inner tubes as I was concerned about sudden rapid deflation through burping and the mess and inconvenience of trying to fix a puncture roadside. Also with my particular tyre rim combination I simply cannot re mount the tyre without using levers. Another point was if I still needed to carry a spare tube and pump anyway, what was I gaining. This system looks as though it has addressed all those issues, my only slight concern being how far could I ride if the need arose, hopping I never have to test that one.

Riding on it for a few months now - I'm not carrying a spare tube anymore. I've had a puncture halfway into a 185km ride and it sealed only marginally - enough to hold about 40 psi at best in a 25c tire (maybe using TT tires for your long distance rides isn't the best of ideas), so it relied on the airliner to keep everything in place - just rode on without any issue.

I think this is a great solution to a genuine problem. My concern would be fitting tubeless tyres, which is hard enough already, when you have these in the tyre stopping you from snugging the tyre right into the bed so you can squeeze that last bit of beed over the rim. I guess the rim and tyre combo would be key. Also, as Si points out, you have no options if you’re a long way from home and get a bad cut and you can’t boot it and stick a tube in.

I had 2 spares in my back pocket. According to the sign post 14k to the next town (owen sound) - or start walking back. I just built up those wheels and did not want to destroy them riding flat. Unbelievably, 100m or 200m up the road "Dans Autobody" was working in his home garage. I got enough air to complete my epic loop - but later at dusk when I had to stop to pee and change my lenses the mosquitoes went nuts. I was so glad to be able to ride away from them. Nowadays I carry 3 spares, 2 inflators, bunch of co2, a pack of tire boots. And a whole lot of luck. Thanks Dan

That's the long term fix, but I still rode 80 miles on the low pressure since there seemed to be not much difference. Apart from being more comfy on rough roads.

The number of times I have punctured and had to stop on a busy road to faff about with a tube on a grass verge. I would love the freedom to ride to a safe spot of my choice to put in a tube. Also the option during a sportive to wait till a feed stop to put in a tube or slog it home on a wet commute would be ideal.

This is the type of video that I´m missing lately. Informative, about interesting topic and filled with details. Thanks for that. Now my opinion on airliner. Do I think that they will stay and expand in pro-peloton? Surely. Will amateurs start to use them as well? Surely. Some of them. Will airlines kill clinchers? Nope! - Answer is in the video. While airliner will always get me home and tubeless will lower the chance of puncture. As amateur cyclist I have different priority! And that is, that once I am on the road, doing my training ride or recovery zone 1/2 ride - it is crucial for me to finish it. If I puncture clincher, I may lose 5min on the side of the road, but I surely continue in not time with my task. But airliner is basically saying - time to go home buddy and my hardly earned time gap for ride is ruined. I know that this scenario may occur 1 out of 50 rides, BUT hey - with clincher I am always able to continue my prescribed ride. So I believe it´s gonna stay. Cheers and thanks for interesting video! :)

Game changer for commuting I say. Many a time I have seen me had to top at the side of the road and change a tube on the way to work or when your trying to get home. Price is a little high but I can see that coming down when more manufactures get on this train. I can see the likes of Mavic or DT Swiss releasing something similar.

If you buy a plug repair kit, you should be able to fix most punctures that don't require a tire boot on the roadside using this system. If you get a good slash though that the sealant wont plug, then you're SOL.

I know they should "last and last", and reviews have said that they do, but Vittoria recommend replacing Air-Liner Road inserts every year! After a puncture that I couldn't fix in a tri last weekend, I am sorely tempted to put the the airliners on my race wheels, but I need to work through what the repair options are when whacking a tube in at the roadside isn't an option. I'm guessing that this would be 1 - hope the sealant works, 2 - plug the hole and inflate, 3 - ride in on the flat tyre.

I've seen another system, that uses a smaller tube protected by foam, in-between the tubeless tire and tube. This system requires air in the tube, which than forces the foam against the tubeless tire, giving it stiffness, but doesn't require a lot of air pressure.

This could really be the end for tubulars in the pro peleton. The main use case, being able to ride when having a flat, is out of the window. I am a strong opponent of tubeless tires. To me they seem to be a messy inconvenience that I do not need in my life. That being said, I did not have a puncture in the last 2 year with about 10 000 km. But this is a technology I will keep a closer look on.

I picked up a set of these. I would *never* willingly do the descent that Si was doing here, unless I had somebody else providing the hoops. I'm a pretty light guy (~63kg) and if I sit on the bike with zero air in the tyres, the only thing between the rim and the ground is the flattened-out tyre carcass. These seem like they'll be good for keeping you from hitting the deck in the event of a catastrophic failure, but I suspect if you tried to get home whilst rolling on only the AirLiner, you'd either crash, or need a new wheel afterwards.

Like the idea and may push me to finally put tubeless on my wheelset after a blowout at 35mph where the tire left the rim and by some miracle I held it upright but I still get twitchy thinking about it going downhill. If the foam is compressed for a long period of time without a punchure will it reform to shape when a punchure finally happens. Something under pressure for a long time tends to hold that shape for a period of time after pressure is released. I guess the pros testing it got a new foam insert every outting so no worries about that.

Using Tubeless, I get a puncture that I actually notice while riding, about once every 18 months. This is on hilly, gritty Yorkshire lanes. Just a pump up and the sealant finishes the job whilst riding. Carry a tire boot and an inner tube but never use them. So this seems like a good idea that I would consider but not for the price of a new tyre. When they get down to £5-£10 or less I’ll probably add them in.

Judging by the MTB side of things they will never get that cheap. @NeutralGenericUser
@NeutralGenericUser 3 жыл бұрын
even if it was 60 rather than 30 psi, this isn't meant to be constantly supporting the tire. I imagine it would fatigue over time if you used it that way, as foam is compressible. In addition, I don't think you would appreciate the increase in rolling resistance. This seems strictly like an alternative to being stranded on the side of the road changing your tire.

Tannus have a product like this "armour" for use with much smaller inner tubes. I couldn't get them to seat evenly both sides of the wheel. Would not recommend.
