I personally have been searching for wider 6 string bass outside of getting a fully custom. This is amazing news to wake up to! As a bassist with larger hands. I have played only a few basses that are between 20mm - 18mm. This is a answer to so many bassist that would love to experience a great 6 string with out cramping up your hands or eating away the top of your fingers trying to thump and slap a bass with super narrow spacing like most consumer 6 strings are. (Ibanez, the new fender 6, Ltd, so on)

Ernie Ball (unfortunately) somehow managed to acquire federally registered trademarks for 3+1 and 4+2 headstocks, so no other maker will be able to do it without Ernie Ball's permission. Fender recently managed to do a 4+2 headstock on their new Squire Affinity 6-string Jazz bass, I suspect that since they had made signature Roscoe Beck and Steve Bailey 6-string basses many years ago with 4+2 headstocks that maybe they were grandfathered?

So I'm going to correct myself here regarding the comment about increased tension on the B string, there is definitely enough room to move the D string machine head to the top of the head stock and keep the G & C string machine heads on the bottom of the head stock, so that doesn't change anything regarding B string placement , disregard my comment regarding increased B string tension, I'm an idiot!!!!

Yamahas, f bass, Roscoe's, mtds, and several other boutique basses are often 19mm and 18mm on 6 string. 16.5 is considered on the narrower side.18 is quite common.

16.5 is perhaps narrow for some people on a 5er. In my experience over the years bass players think they would want standard string spacing when switching over to a 6er but end up regretting it when they realize how uncomfortably massive everything has become.
