Now this is the right way to kick off the week! INXS were huge - even as big as U2 back in the day. If singer Michael Hutchence had not left this world in ‘97, y’all would be very familiar with them. He was a frontman for the ages, full of charisma and vocal chops. An irresistible light. Their catalog has so much channel-worthy material. Check out “The One Thing,” “Don’t Change,” “Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain),” and “Need You Tonight/Mediate.”

True, they were really one of just a few huge bands for a good chunk of time, everyone knew then. I was in college when Kick came out and my mom was jamming to them, too, lol. Oh my gosh, that is so beautiful and Michael’s voice is probably one of the best in that song just under “never tear us apart”. His vocals were great to begin with but he was just a good front guy and a lot of fun and cute but by 1984 to 1985 felt more comfortable with himself and he was in his mid-20s. He was in love and dated his really first lifelong love from 1982 until 1987. That’s Michelle Bennett and she’s the one who called right before he even had suicide but I have always talked and he always loved her. When they broke up, he gets involved with this young girl named Kylie Minogue. She was a young innocent Australian singer, who was pretty popular, and they couldn’t have been more opposite! He was an older man, and he should’ve known better to stay away from that because she was an adult, and just coming into her own and literally didn’t know anything about life & bad boys and they were dating for two years and then he ended up breaking up with her because he knew they weren’t right for each other. He cried his eyes out because he didn’t want to break her heart and he knew he was going to but he was just not the guy or man for her in here she was in her early 20s and by then he was every bit of almost 30. Michael didn’t date anybody after that for a couple years and that’s when he got involved with that super model, named Helena from Denmark. I know they loved each other but they were like the best buddies and hung around and had a lot of fun together. They have a much more mature relationship and she could handle his badness and he had started to calm down while they dated but the problem was a year after they started dating they were in Copenhagen and they were riding bikes home and eating pizza. some taxi driver stopped right behind him and told Michael to get on the road and he hit Michael and the singer hit his head on the curb and it screwed up his brain so bad he had blood coming out of his mouth and his ears but he didn’t want to stay in the hospital when EMS took him. His girlfriend said she stayed in his apartment for a month in the dark with headaches and threw up all the time which meant he had concussion, and yet he wouldn’t say in the hospital. The odd thing is that Helena said immediately when he came conscious in the ER, he was extremely hostile and aggressive, which was not like him at all, and he became more and more like that after he started to recuperate from his injury. he went to see a brain specialist in France. He didn’t just have a concussion, but part of his brain was chipped and his nerves were severed so he couldn’t smell anything and he couldn’t taste anything.. you don’t think about it being a big deal until you have to live with it and especially somebody as sensual as Michael. Helena ended up breaking up with him because she couldn’t take it anymore. he was hanging around everybody that was not right for him, including Paula Yates, the woman who left her husband Bob Geldof, and took off with Michael for months after running into him again in 1994. He was seeing her probably before Helena broke up with him. she just got tired of his behavior, and whatever was wrong with him after that accident he was never the same. Paula & other people he hung around with made everything worse. Sad!!!

I think INXS was much better than some gave them credit for at the time. Between the way their name was spelled and their stylized music videos, it was easy to not consider them as serious. I'm such a huge fan of INXS. I saw them in concert in October, 1997, just three months before Michael Hutchence passed. I started listening to them with their third album, Shabooh Shoobah (1982). Michael had Jim Morrison charisma, Mick Jagger moves, Freddie Mercury sex appeal, and just a smidge of Michael Jackson's vocal quirks. You need to hear Don't Change, The One Thing, Need You Tonight (top 5), Original Sin (Alex will love the bass licks at about 1:30), Burn for You, Never Tear Us Apart (top 5), I Send a Message, Elegantly Wasted, What You Need (top 5), Suicide Blonde, Listen Like Thieves, Devil Inside-Words are weapons, sharper than knives (top 5), Beautiful Girl, Mystify (top 5), Mediate (watch the video!). Michael Hutchence is the fantastic lead vocalist. Every time a new single dropped from INXS was exciting and fun and full of energy. Hutchence committed suicide at 37 to which I say, if you or a friend is struggling with depression please take it very seriously and seek professional help. ❤️

Why why why haven't you done an INXS song from Wembley yet? Michael Hutchence is an absolute star on the stage. Their sound just explodes live. (My preference from Wembley is "What You Need" but they're all great. ) This was fun guys. Looking forward to more INXS.

Actually listening to this song for the first time, hearing it for the first time in years. It takes the best parts of Robert Palmer, the vibe of Sledgehammer, and Prince’s R&B/Soul horns via synth and mixes them together excellently.

Yeah, was thinking the same thing, that the kind of smooth crooner throwback thing happening in the UK around the time (so also Style Council, ABC, Spandau Ballet, etc) was referenced here nicely with the horns but it really was its own animal. I was over it when it was on the radio constantly but it does bear up upon relisten.

INXS comes from that tried and true arena of 'Pub Rock' in Australia where if you didn't bring it live 6 nights a week you wouldn't survive. They have a massive catalogue and their earlier stuff that pre-dates this break out album is more fun - more rock and less funk. Live though they just killed - their Wembley Live show is a band at the top of their form. Fav's of mine that I think you'll love 'Johnson's Aeroplane' , 'Don't Change', 'Original Sin' and the monster 'Never tear us apart' Definitely worth diving deeper into these boys. Check Cold Chisel - for the Royalty of Pub Rock they all aspired to be.

Michael Hutchence was the last of the truly great frontmen who had it all. Charisma for days, Good looking and a great voice. You can find a live concert from them on KZbin that was shot at Wembley to a sold out crowd and he had that crowd in the palm of his hand the entire time!

Well, slam the door and call me a liar. Dogs and cats living together! Mass Hysteria! Alex liked an 80's song! A+! I'm claiming it Alex. Even though you hesitated. Seriously though, so glad you guys liked your first dip of the toe into the INXS pool. You could do about a two hour live stream of their greatest hits. Funky, soulful, power pop, new wave, ear worms are their forte. Try any of these on for size: Listen Like Thieves, Need You Tonight, What You Need, Suicide Blonde, Devil Inside, The One Thing, Mystify, Shine Like It Does, Mediate, Kick, and Never Tear Us Apart to name a few.

They, INXS are from the pub rock scene from Australia which produced some banging bands in the 70's, 80's and 90's. I was lucky enough to see them possibly 50 times plus live (which if you listen to Aussie bands you should always do the live versions) which I feel very grateful for.

So many bangers on that album. Need You Tonight, Devil Inside, a huge ballad with strings called Never Tear Us Apart….this was the first cassette that I ever bought with my own money as a kid and I played it to death. I highly recommend older hits like Original Sin, Listen Like Theives and What You Need as well as later ones like Suicide Blonde, Disappear, and Elegantly Wasted. Michael Hutchence was a front man for the ages.

LOVE INXS and grew up listening to their stuff. Their sound was constantly evolving and they always kept things interesting, treading the line between funk and rock (and women dug the band just as much as men) and they were a staple on MTV back in the day. I got to see them play live 3 times in during the 80s, and to this day, they're still one of the tightest bands I've even heard play. Shabooh Shoobah was the first album to hit in the states, and the singles "The One Thing" and "Don't Change" are amazing. The Swing was the next album, and featured "Original Sin" (which was produced by Nile Rodgers and features background vocals by Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates), "I Send a Message", and "Burn For You", among others. Listen Like Thieves was next, and featured songs like "What You Need" (one of my favorite INXS tracks, and you guys DEFINITELY need to check it out), "This Time", and the title track "Listen Like Thieves" Kick is the album that features "New Sensation", as well as "Need You Tonight/Mediate", "Devil Inside", "Mystify", and "Never Tear Us Apart" (and it's pretty much loaded up with bangers from start to finish) Later albums had songs like "Bitter Tears", "Disappear", "Suicide Blonde", "Elegantly Wasted", "Not Enough Time" and tons of others.

"Never Tear Us Apart" should be the next one you hit. Probably their signature song. My band worked up a sort of 60's Soul version of that song that we played in clubs for years. We played it one night at a bar in Phuket, Thailand and had no idea that the drummer from INXS was in the audience. As soon as he recognized what we were playing he stood up from his table and stared open mouthed for the whole song! He bought us all beers during the break and chatted with us...and we still had no idea who he was. He never mentioned it. It wasn't until after he left that the manager said "You know who that was, don't you?"

Gentlemen, it took a while, but you finally got around to INXS. They were a premiere pop band from the 80s, and they hit hard. Hutchence had vocal chops and the rest of the band found grooves and unique arrangements that simultaneously lived in, and stepped outside the standard 80s fare. Hit the early stuff like Don’t Change and move forward. The album Kick (that this is from) might even be worth a whole listen itself - it’s loaded with good stuff. I know so many alt and punk listeners from back then for whom INXS was their total guilty pleasure.
