I work as a server and I truly love it. It’s high stress, it’s a performance, it’s a borderline sport. My best advice is 1. Be okay with being yelled at. Your fellow servers and cooks arent getting personal, everyone is stressed and focused. Sometimes you just need to say what needs to be said as quick and directly as possible. I promise you’ll have your own moments where you tell a server or cook or busser how it is, and how it needs to be. 2. Wear nonslip shoes. You WILL slip and fall on your ass. 3. Introduce yourself with your name. I promise it makes the customers experience all that more meaningful and makes your service more personable. Tables truly do appreciate it.

1. Is something I wish I knew before I started serving. I first began as a host, and EVERYONE would be really rude to me because of where I'd seat the customers. The servers were constantly yelling at me. I eventually had to realize that it wasn't because they were genuinely mean people, it was because they're constantly under a lot of stress and didn't know how to properly communicate under that pressure. I eventually learned not to take it to heart and simply say "oh well"

Thank you for this video. I’ve recently started as a server at Olive Garden with absolutely no previous experience. My first few days have been really rocky and stressful. I’ve already had a table yell at me in front of the restaurant and leave without paying. I’ve been thinking about quitting because the thought of going to work makes me anxious. But after watching this, I realize that the learning curve for serving is pretty severe, and I’m going to keep pushing forward instead of quitting.

I was also a server at Olive Garden a few years ago, I’d say the hardest part is keeping up with all the refills on soup, salad and drinks. Always think one step ahead of what guest need like clearing out tables, printing the check as they are finishing up their meals, asking if they need boxes, getting drink refills, asking if they want to do desert, etc.

I just got done with my first day and I messed up bad I had a table move seats and I forgot to update it on the POS so I ended up charging the wrong people with someone else's check so it created a whole mess of stuff and made me end the night owing money I had to hand over all of my tips to make it better and I still owe 100$. I took lessons from my situation though although I think it's unfair the restaurant is holding me accountable for a mistake I made on my first day on the busiest day of the week but that's life, I figure if I make a similar mistake I should just find a new job cause I don't wanna dig myself out of debt from my own newbie tendencies.

I'm 51. I got hired to work on a train through the Rockies. I thought the job was making drinks and giving tourist commentary. I found out I was serving Breakfast and Lunch....two seatings of each. It's a breakneck pace and I have never served tables in my life. For a good reason. I find the personal space of eating in a restaurant odd, even from the POV of a patron. I enjoy the phsyical challenge of carrying trays of drinks on a moving train, but the sheer pace of the steps is daunting. My nemesis is cutlery and clearing tables...The journey is billed as first class...learning live with guests is terrifying. I worked two days observing the upstairs drinks and commentary while dining as a guest. I had no idea as a guest observer how the breakneck speed was. Then I found myself shadowing in the dining room. Sheer absolute terror. Yes, the Rockies and magnificent scenery are going by....but the pace and then the flip over to next seating...insane...12 hour on feet...Three days off the train and I am still swaying like a drunken sailor. I got into this gig for $...a colleague said they made close to $60,000 in four months last year...but serving. Food. Cutlery....getting up at 4 a.m. four days in a row....I dunno. There is something to be said for laid back bartending at venues and enjoying a summer life as well. This video is very good. My manager said many of the same things to me. They want me to succeed...it gets easier with repetition...don't quit...I'm going to have to do this one minute at a time, one step at a time, one day at a time, one trip at a time....good luck to the newbs. It's absolutely terrifying.

My biggest challenge is serving a dining room all by myself where people seat themselves and you don't always see them come in right away because you are taking a phone order or getting drinks. We are very short-staffed, I am new and I need to learn to juggle sometimes seven tables, plus takeout orders. Thankfully the kitchen staff is great! But I need to figure out a system as to what table us at what stage of service, trouble keeping it all straight. When the other waitress is on with me, tables are waited by both of us, so it gets confusing to know what has or hasn't been done. We need a system.

I think quite a lot of it has to do with the individual customer. I've had customers say that I was awesome and amazing and others who left me no tip at all because they simply left. (I work at a hotel, so they get charged to the room for the food, but if they leave, we don't get a tip). It's the inconsistency that's hard. I work very hard and some people will notice that and appreciate it and give me good tips while others try to "save money" by not tipping. It's difficult to understand since I would always leave a tip, even if the service is bad.

Have an interview Saturday very nervous about it I’m just afraid of failure and screwing everything up. I’ve worked in a food place before but made the food and know how frustrating it is when the front of house screws stuff up and really don’t wanna make the same mistakes just because of stress or nervousness

My future mother in law is a manager of a family restaurant and she asked me if I wanted to start serving a few months ago and most people might think it must be easy on me cause I’m marrying the managers son but it’s the opposite cause there’s higher expectations of me and boy have I been busting my butt off, I’m serving 5 days a week for 6 hours and I’m starting to have my coworker notice a big improvement in me now compared to when I first started

Y'all how do we literally not let other servers take advantage of us tho- literally just had to walk out of a place because piss poor management and absolutely NO boundaries. Was supposed to be behind the bar tonight. Bar wasn't filled, tables were filling, so we behind the bar were basically bussing every table for the girls, but I'll let that one slide and say, I get it, I'm a team player, right? But how come on my third night I had to apologize to 3 different people because their servers were NOT TENDING TO THEM Literally was apologizing for people being unattended to my 2nd night as well. Is that absolutely ridiculous, or is it just me? Literally the most embarrassing experience ever, having all these people looking at ME, the NEW GIRL, because the other girls who have BEEN THERE are NEGLECTING their tables, and yes, neglecting, as they were definitely not running laps I'm so hella confused and ofc am disappointed in myself. But I'm also trying to learn boundaries. Somebody tell me this was ridiculous

@gna76793 жыл бұрын
Lmao .. when you started talking about leaving the restaurant and server dreams 😂 I had this dream, where I went to work. As I'm walking in, the restaurant is dark and the computer where I clock in is dark and not responding to my touch as usual. I go to back (server area) and I see some coworkers, them asking me what I'm doing there so early. I ask them what time it is and they tell me it is around 3:30. I kind of groan in annoyance cuz I'm supposed to start at 8. So I tell them that I'll go home and go back to bed... I'll come back for my shift later! I woke up and it was actually 5:45, an hour before my alarm is supposed to go off. 😭
