Shimano does actually produce a dropper post marketed as the "Pro Discovery" dropper. I have used on my gravel bike for 2 years and it's been flawless.

Watched the whole thing without any skipping, which never happens with this type of content. This is a compliment, by the way. To my mind, 11s was/is a handicap for GRX. I’m glad to see them address it, but the the people want Di2!

My favorite gravel setup that I've used was GRX 46/30 with an 11-40 XT cassette. The range was great for long distance audax road rides and for steep gravel routes. Bummed Shimano didn't make an 11-40 GRX official cassette.

I run the same setup and love it, but with a 105 groupset. Shame that with the change to 12 speed I don't think there are any first party 11-40 12 speed cassettes you can buy

@@BoxCarBoy12 Why would you need 11-40 12 speed when you have a 12 speed 10-36 tup to 10-52 with a chainring starting at 30, all the way up till 56...? All you have to do is switch from brand.. Wich should be a no-brainer on gravel and mtb already..
@BoxCarBoy12

@@YannickLB Because I want a 2x drivetrain and I want all the low gears, even lower than 30-36t. And you can't use the 52t cassette on the 2x. And also because I have a lot of HG hubs and want to hold off on shelling out the money for microspline hubs compatible with 10t small cogs for as long as possible.

@@BoxCarBoy12pretty bummed with this too. Maybe they’ll release an 11-40 HG cassette whenever Di2 gets released. 11,12,13,15,17,19,21,24,28,32,36,40 That would be sweet.

@@BoxCarBoy12 I mean.. to each their own, but why would you want that low on gravel with 2x? Seems like a handicap. I've got 2x 12 speed 46/35 with 10-36 and in my opinion i've got all the possible range I could need as far as my imagination goes. I've done 35% climbs with it, and 80km/h without spinning out. @@thedownunderverse I personally get a lot of chain drop shifting to my big ring. It has to be in just the right gear in my rear cog, and that changes daily. I’ve looked DEEPLY into it but no cigar. I have been totally impressed with the HG+ shifting on XTR. Really psyched to get the 12 speed GRX 10-45 on my gravel bike, with a 44 T ring (I run a Red crank for the power meter, and aftermarket 12 speed HG+ compatible rings are available). One question: is the cable pull for the mechanical group here now the same as with the MTB stuff? If so this would allow the option of using XT or XTR derailleurs... Would be nice to know.

I was wondering if some sneaky behind-the-scenes GRX testing was going on. For an all-road bike that 48/31 with 11-36 seems like a good fit for range and cadence matching but they really should have come out of the gate with the Di2. The 1x should be at least finally comparable with SRAM, in fact besting their XPLR group unless you use a SRAM mullet setup but I think the steps are just too great to use on longer rides with mixed road or flats.

Like you said the 2.5mm extra on the Q-factor on gravel groups allows wider tyres, however Shimano thinks anyone riding gravel, at least at the top tier doesn't deserve any cranks shorter than 170mm. Stupid, especially considering studies showing the benefits of shorter cranks, and of course people like my 5' 2" wife are just screwed if they want to keep a whole groupset.

I never know what model of GRX is the more premium. Unlike Dura-Ace, Ultegra, 105... GRX is just all GRX and if you look at part numbers sometimes it will have a 400, 800 but even on their GRX page they don't say anything about 400,600,800. They just have how many speeds in the rear cassette and whether it is Di2 or not. I was looking at a bike at the shop and both models had GRX, I only could assume that since one bike was more expensive than the other... that GRX was "lighter?" Shimano needs to do a better branding and aesthetic distinction between their GRX tiers, because honestly it's all GRX to me.

I was hoping this group would be available soon. I currently ride GRX one by with a Wolf Tooth 38 tooth front ring. Not having a big front ring doesn’t bother me. For the racers they can go with an Ultegra crank. I also prefer mechanical shifting. I don’t think electronic shifting makes a huge difference on the rear. For adventure riding mechanical makes for one less thing that needs charging. It’s also less expensive to replace in the event of a crash. 1 x 12 mechanical is my group of choice.

Agree with the 42t 1x chainring. That will not work in local varied terrains and gradients of various lengths. Spun out 42x11 with 11-36 rear on a rival 1 setup on long descent as the group rode away. Also overgeared on the long canyon climb. So will need 2x the but rear gearing is too high from shimano to buy as is. Will have to modify the shimano gearing a bit to work for me. Or just buy sram rival axs which has what said with all the sram options. But love the new shimano wheels.

That outro is priceless. I don't race and my fitness isn't what it should be, so I'm typically looking for low end. I like the Shimano BB design, preferably non-pressfit and T47. That stated, I've used Shimano cranks with what is otherwise Campag Ekar (9-42t, Checkpoint SL5) and SRAM AXS (10-52t, Checkpoint ALR4) drive trains with good success. The 'glue' ends up being the chain ring, which is Ratio (36t) for the Campy and Wolftooth (40t, 42t) for the SRAM. I like the Garmin power pedals with the Campag and Stages double-sided on the SRAM. I also appreciate that with a little internet research I can find 3rd party parts to mix and match to get what I need. I want this new mechanical Shimano GRX group set for my ALR4. So, how's 1x treating you ? I have changed recently on the gravel bike, and chose the ring size to maintain lowest gear, and had a slight drop in highest gear (no real issue) but the 2 tooth jumps really bugs me when on fast sections ... Thinking about mixing and matching with other cassetes to get smaller jumps there. I don't mind any of the other gear jumps, and as a whole 1x works better for me, as most of the time I use the middle range, so no need to change chainrings on bumpy stuff is definetly a +.

Even after seeing this new GRX I'm still going with Microshift Sword if I end up needing to replace my current groupset

Nice to see that they are still supporting mechanical shifting. But I will stick with my 11-speed 105/Ultegra gravel setup.

Its a shame they didn't fix the 2x crankset ratios. 48/31 still makes no sense, too long and too short at same time. We need a 44/34 or even the good old 46/36.

Agree on chainring. When I see 40T on a gravel bike I'm like whaaaat!? I use Garbaruk rings and don't care what manufacturers do. And the time it will get to customers/builds/stock there will be plenty of options. Btw I used x12 chain on a regular chainring (x11) works fine. Try any ring you have.

Still no post mount brake calipers! I have a Post Mount and a flat mount on my CaadX. It would be nice to buy both GRX calipers instead of an MTB caliper on the front and GRX at the rear.

Is the coating on the levers different from the 11-speed version? I was not a fan of that stuff at all. Way too fragile and you can just tell in about ten years it’s gonna degrade into a sticky bummer.

I wonder what the gearing difference is with this new 10-51 compared to the XTR 10-51. The XTR is lighter by quite a few grams...........

I wish you had taken Shimano to task for only offering up to 11-36 cassette for 2X. Is that the best they can do? Why aren’t they designing it for 11-40?? The masses want wider 2X gearing (or at least the option of it) for a gravel groupset ..

@TheRidewithBenDelaney are you waxing chains now? (noticed the ultrasonic cleaner on your bench). Could be a good video on the practicality of doing regularly. Also isn’t that garage cold with no insulation in Boulder?

Do we know if the new brake calipers are compatible with the 11spd grx brifters? Out of all the changes, the part that really perked my ears up was possible relief from rubbing chirping brakes as a big guy.

What is the point in 1x setup 40 chainrings and 51t cassette when you can go lower on a 2x setup with 46/30 and 11-40cassette? At the same time your highest gear will also be higher. What is the point?

Seems like shimano has carved out the lower segment of gravel groups, while SRAM has the higher end. Makes sense why they only have mech for now.

51 tooth cog... to what extremes will people go just to avoid having a front derailleur... in a few years in the future we will look back and laugh at this 1x silliness, the same way we look back at bellbottom velvet pants and wide polyester ties and laugh.... just goes to show that with enough advertising you can convince people to do anything....

Why so? It's more simple and it seems to work, so where is the problem?
@PRH123
@PRH123 4 ай бұрын
@@hellebarde1450 well, the below are what I’d list as issues: - very (very) expensive cassettes - narrower overall range of gear ratios - longer derailleur cages - chain line - need to sweep the derailleur across much of the cassette in certain situations 1x makes sense for what it was originally developed for, MTB, where riders frequently shift the front ring and there is a whole lotta skakin’ goin’ on with the terrain, and so there’s risk of a chain drop…. doesn’t make sense for a road, touring, or gravel bike…

Dang I'm waiting on parts tocdo a mechanical XPLR build. I wanted the GRX stuff but it seemed iffy as to when that would be released. Really tempted to fall back on XPLR and build a 1x GRX. I have a 2x GRX 400 bike and honestly love it so wouldn't mind sticking with Shimano

I have 11 speed Shimano road, and SRAM AXS mullet and honestly, I’m leaning towards going Microshift Sword next because it’s 1/4 the price of GRX mechanical. If it was hydro it would basically be game over Shimano/SRAM in my opinion.
