That outro is priceless. I don't race and my fitness isn't what it should be, so I'm typically looking for low end. I like the Shimano BB design, preferably non-pressfit and T47. That stated, I've used Shimano cranks with what is otherwise Campag Ekar (9-42t, Checkpoint SL5) and SRAM AXS (10-52t, Checkpoint ALR4) drive trains with good success. The 'glue' ends up being the chain ring, which is Ratio (36t) for the Campy and Wolftooth (40t, 42t) for the SRAM. I like the Garmin power pedals with the Campag and Stages double-sided on the SRAM. I also appreciate that with a little internet research I can find 3rd party parts to mix and match to get what I need. I want this new mechanical Shimano GRX group set for my ALR4. I was hoping this group would be available soon. I currently ride GRX one by with a Wolf Tooth 38 tooth front ring. Not having a big front ring doesn’t bother me. For the racers they can go with an Ultegra crank. I also prefer mechanical shifting. I don’t think electronic shifting makes a huge difference on the rear. For adventure riding mechanical makes for one less thing that needs charging. It’s also less expensive to replace in the event of a crash. 1 x 12 mechanical is my group of choice.

Agree with the 42t 1x chainring. That will not work in local varied terrains and gradients of various lengths. Spun out 42x11 with 11-36 rear on a rival 1 setup on long descent as the group rode away. Also overgeared on the long canyon climb. So will need 2x the but rear gearing is too high from shimano to buy as is. Will have to modify the shimano gearing a bit to work for me. Or just buy sram rival axs which has what said with all the sram options. But love the new shimano wheels.

I was wondering if some sneaky behind-the-scenes GRX testing was going on. For an all-road bike that 48/31 with 11-36 seems like a good fit for range and cadence matching but they really should have come out of the gate with the Di2. The 1x should be at least finally comparable with SRAM, in fact besting their XPLR group unless you use a SRAM mullet setup but I think the steps are just too great to use on longer rides with mixed road or flats.

I never know what model of GRX is the more premium. Unlike Dura-Ace, Ultegra, 105... GRX is just all GRX and if you look at part numbers sometimes it will have a 400, 800 but even on their GRX page they don't say anything about 400,600,800. They just have how many speeds in the rear cassette and whether it is Di2 or not. I was looking at a bike at the shop and both models had GRX, I only could assume that since one bike was more expensive than the other... that GRX was "lighter?" Shimano needs to do a better branding and aesthetic distinction between their GRX tiers, because honestly it's all GRX to me.

So, how's 1x treating you ? I have changed recently on the gravel bike, and chose the ring size to maintain lowest gear, and had a slight drop in highest gear (no real issue) but the 2 tooth jumps really bugs me when on fast sections ... Thinking about mixing and matching with other cassetes to get smaller jumps there. I don't mind any of the other gear jumps, and as a whole 1x works better for me, as most of the time I use the middle range, so no need to change chainrings on bumpy stuff is definetly a +.

Thank you for the reply! I couldn't locate the video at that link. I'm sure it's on my end. My only concern is whether the Hyperglide L2 is backward compatible with the previous 11 speed HG. I believe it is, but just trying to confirm. Thanks!

@@CrabgrassFarmer No, it is not.

Yikes! I've got a 2x12 groupset on order. I thought the freehub on the 2x groupsets was backward compatible, that's the best info I could find, and it looks like it should be. Do you have a link to something saying it isn't backward compatible? Sorry, I'm not trying to put my homework on you, but this is a bit foggy out there. Thank you!

@@CrabgrassFarmer Sorry, I misunderstood your question. The 12spd group (and casssette) will work on 11spd wheels. So you are all set. You just can't put an 11spd cassette on the L2 freehub.

A few questions - Assume the cassettes are XT MTB 10-51 and 10-45 cassettes? Not sure if you explicitly said -the 2X option is 12 speed - if so I think this is a big miss that they should have an 11-40 rear for us less fit riders. Finally - is the pull on the cables the same as 12 speed MTB?
@michiganstate149 Жыл бұрын
Yeah they are. Those 10-45t versions that seems useless to most MTB riders who went with the 10-51t just got more valuable now that they are shared between MTB and gravel/road groups.

11-40 works with the 11s grx810...just need to adjust the b screw...I have the 46/30 11-40 setup on my checkpoint...works fine...
@MAEBikr Жыл бұрын
Agreed -I have tried an XT 11-40 on my Argon 18 Dark Matter - I get into a chain length issue on the lower 11 tooth cog with the proper chain length for the 40 tooth. Just not enough tension. Would like them to make a 12 speed 11-40 to give you that go anywhere 31x40@@andrewmandich5906

Why do you say the rotor is new? It looks like their current second level XT MTB model… just curious.
@TheRidewithBenDelaney Жыл бұрын
The new rotor is a CL800 with a curvy black carrier. Confusingly, I've just got the MT800s there in the video. Sorry for the confusion!

Call me crazy, but I'd like to pair the 2x chainrings with the 10-51 cassette. Somebody clue me into why that's not an option. We don't all have the legs of Pidcock or MVDP, you know!
@hansschotterradler3772 Жыл бұрын
Derailleurs don't have the capacity. Assume 46/30 chain rings. That's 16t differential + 41t differential for the cassette. Makes it 57t in total differential. Too much for derailleurs.

I wish you had taken Shimano to task for only offering up to 11-36 cassette for 2X. Is that the best they can do? Why aren’t they designing it for 11-40?? The masses want wider 2X gearing (or at least the option of it) for a gravel groupset ..
