The cog spacing is different between HG and CUES. This combo of Sword + CUES would most likely not work with a 10 speed CUES (Linkglide) cassette, because those have the same (narrower) cog spacing as 11 speed CUES except with one fewer cog.

I'm using MIcroshift brifters R8 with Shimano Claris rear Derailour on my 2002 Cannondale F3000SL CAAD5 based gravel bike. It's 1x 8 setup with Sunrace 11-40 cassete, 40T NW front chainring, KMC 9 speed chain (yes, on old setups thinner chain shifts better - like 10 sp. chain on 9 sp. cassete , etc.). And the left brifter's shifter actuator is used to actuate my Tmars 27,2mm dropper seatpost. It rides like a dream. TRP HYRd brakes helps to.

For friction shifting with a CUES rear derailleur, I had good results with a JTEK 6 Shiftmate. The CUES rear derailleur is something like 1.05 so that shiftmate works well with friction shifters that can pull 10 or 11spd ~ 1.4ish

One must respect the work taken to explore the different options. How boring life would be without taking the efford to satisfy one's curiosity. Imagine just accepting the setups sold out there when many don't even satisfy the job they advertise. I'm taking about today's 1x system for gravel bikes that are meant to be used on pavement and off-road but come with limited range, which Russ had to adapt with a 2x. With this last adaptation and his bike is closer to the perfect gravel bike. Hope this shifter doesn't need constant adjustment since it seems more practical for roller-coaster terrain.

As I'm sure we've all experienced, shifting and shifting well and reliably are two different things. I've often had derailleurs shift reasonably well on the stand and then jump and skip gears when you ride under load. It will be interesting to see what Russ finds in his road testing. Personally I wouldn't want to ride and rely on this kind of kludgy setup.

To me the real magic is going to be getting that LinkGlide cassette working. I don't see this CUES rear derailleur working with drop bar being so groundbreaking. We already have a plethora of similar RDs, but so far I'm not aware of anyone being able to shift the LG cassette with drop bars. Having that LG durability for a commuter bike would be a game changer
@kongnadian886
@kongnadian886 24 күн бұрын
Yes. I am putting an LG 11 speed on my commuter as well. And unable to find a road shifter that is compatible for me to do the drop bar conversion. The bike has hydraulic discs, it feels weird to have a road hydraulic brake lever but not using it to shift.

I have a similar combo AdventX 1by shifters, 4100 Deore 10 speed cassette, Shimano 5100 rd and ZTTO 10 speed chain, 42 tooth chainring. And... in general, the work is good, but not too great. The main problems are dropping the chain on the three largest sprockets, as well as choosing the chain length for this combination. I had to put a slightly longer chain and instead of the lower pulley with 13 teeth, a pulley with 14 teeth to compensate for the slack of the chain, but be able to unscrew the b-screw as much as possible. And with this combination, everything worked quite well, only the release of the chain from the largest chain sprocket was slightly slower, but not critical. There is no overdrop, as there was with a shorter chain.

There are so many "hacks" like this with Shimano combined with the Chinese/Taiwanese stuff. Like the 12 speed Lt-Woo mechanical (cable and Hydro) road levers actually have the same pull ratio (identical not just close) as Shimano 11 speed road/gravel and 10s GRX, so you can take the 12s Lt-Woo levers and combine them with pre Di2 11s 105, Ultegra, DA, and GRX to get 12 speed mechanical rim or disc.

having it work in the stand is one thing but it doesn't always work when you're actually riding it and the system is under load. I remember I once bought a shifter that was claimed to be compatible with my cassette, and in the stand it went up and down just fine, but on the road somewhere in the middle of the cassette the indexing didn't quite match. no matter what I tried it would favor either the gear above or the gear below. if I got off the bike and flipped it over, it would go up and down seamlessly. at the time I didn't have the money to take it to the bike shop for a simple shifting issue that only affected one gear in the middle of the range, so I just learned to live with it. it wasn't until I took it in to replace the cassette (I didn't have a chain whip and cassette removal tool yet then) the mechanic told me it was compatible with SRAM, not Shimano.

Whoever claims "not supposed to work" should realize that pull ratios and cog pitch numbers can be used to evaluate compatibility, so the question boils down to: Is it a perfect match? Is it off by some percentage but not enough to be an issue for the totality of the cassette shifting range?

I used to run a r5800 rd and the m5100 cog (11-36) with a 50/34 (r7000) weirdly enough with some fine tuning it shifts fine ish

@lastfm4477 24 күн бұрын
Why is that weird? 5800 & R7000 are 100% cross compatible. I've used Tiagra 4700 10sp shifters, with 6800-SS RD, 44x33T, and 12-36T cassette with no problems. (36T is definitely the max teeth for this setup.

Nice video! Thx! The only think people need is a brifter that can run a Deore 11s rear derailleur. We are waiting for this for so many years. Insted, Microshift is trying do do they own proprietary stuff and it is too expensive for a company with no history. I would save my money to buy a GRX hydraulic set. I don't like Shimano having 4 different non compatible systems at the moment but we know their stuff works for years and years.

Microshift uses the same cable pull as Dynasis 10speed. You can use a Deore dynasis rear derailleur with a Sword or Advent X brifter.

@@PathLessPedaledTV Thanks! So I think is a viable option if you already have the Dynasys RD at home and do not care/need hydraulic brakes.

I have a mint pair of ST-6600 Ultegra 10 speed shifters, does anyone know the cable pull ratio for these and whether I could use them with the Cues derailleur system?
@PathLessPedaledTV
@PathLessPedaledTV 21 күн бұрын
Likely won't work with CUES.
@wrcompositi
@wrcompositi 21 күн бұрын
I've measured some Shimano 10s road shifters including ST-6600, and they pull 22.5mm of cable across all gears. Therefore the ratio is 3.95(cassette spacing) ÷ (22.5 ÷ 9) = 1.58 CUES derailleur has 1.05 ratio (same as other Shimano 10~12 speed mountain derailleurs), so they don't match unless you use converters such as Wolftooth Tanpan or Jtek shiftmate. That said, if you don't plan to use cassettes larger than 40T, than all the Shimano 8~9 speed mountain derailleurs can work with ST-6600. My favorites are shadow RD such as RD-M592/662/772, the longest SGS cage can accommodate up to 47T capacity, which is very useful for 3x10 setting with 11-36T cassette. Incidentally, RD-R3000 & RD-R2000 are essentially derived from old mountain derailleurs (1.58 ratio), they can take 40T cassettes and their 94.5mm GS cages are only slightly shorter than 100mm mountain SGS, so the total capacity is very generous for such a "road" derailleur.

Great discovery. I put a Rivendell friction shifter on my LHT. Seemed to be shifting great but noticed it would skip up or down a gear when I stood up on the pedals. Running it 9 spd with 9 spd chain……..thoughts

Having the same issue, then, Old Anorak, here, are we still supposed to stand on our crank anymore (isn’t modern cycling about spinning as fast as you possibly can, honestly Dunno 🤷‍♀️?). Apparently, you’ll have to check, a *true* 9 speed chain should be 11/128, many, supposedly 9 speed chains, and sold as such, would be 3/32 ? Worth noting, that I experience these chain jumps, when cranking Watts, only when on the first small cogs, no chain jumps when on the last 5 larger cogs on a 11-32 cassette.

Sometimes… sometimes… when you put a load on the bike (riding it) it may not shift as well. I’ve never tried this combo, so I’m not saying anything about this experiment. I’ve had that issue at our shop more than once. Shifted great on the stand, but not during a ride.

Cues cassette has 11 speed spacing tho, so a 10 speed cues wouldn't work. I like that the cues cassette will extend the chain life so using a cues RD without the cassette is kind of not worth it. I am using a cues 10 speed 11-39 in friction.

I’ve found 11spd works across mixed drivetrains that use 9,10 and 11spd parts. Also I don’t want to buy multiple speed chains and want as much interchangeability between bikes.

Shimano should just address the elephant in the room and make a CUES electric which handles everything from 9-13 speed (with changes to the jockey wheels and interchangeable cages) and has a battery permanently fixed to the derailleur or connects to one in the handlebar or seatpost. It should be wired with a recharge port in the bar end (USB 3) with batteries optionally stored in the bar. Some Asian companies are starting to produce this and it could be the low budget model which works with cable operated (rim and disk) brakes. This could be used on e-bikes as well and it would eliminate a lot of other products.

So many gear choices these days using a combination of components. Shimano seems to have less compatibility issues the Sram. Not much mixing and matching like you do with new Sram.
