Awesome vid Jason. This lens looks beautiful and for someone that has used the 24mm gm, I really like the light weight and smaller size. But.... I do like more money in my pocket!! So tough to pick!

Oh man, I was clear on getting the Sony 35mm f1.8 instead of the 24mm GM because of the price difference. But with this, I'm now back to being torn between the 35mm and this! Which one should I get to pair with my 85mm f1.8 for portrait photos?

24-50-105 or 20-35-85, these are the ideal combos.

If you go for the 24mm f/1.4, you can mount it on an APS-C body and the crop factor will make it shoot like a 36mm f/2.1. I almost always carry an APS-C body to use as a teleconverter.
@SourPlanet2 жыл бұрын
The Sony looked sharper across the frame on those zoom-ins right after the corner test zooms. It was definitely sharper in the corners. I assume they both stop down to be sharp across the frame, though, so maybe not toooo relevant. Especially for a 24mm. It's a gorgeous looking lens too, good lawd. Wouldn't kick that puppy out of bed. As usual, Sigma delivers like 95% of the performance at like 60% of the price. Great to have them always chipping away at that market share ⛏️⛏️

Awesome review, thanks! I wish that Sigma would release a 24mm for APS-C/m43, to fill the gap between the 16mm and 30mm of the crop-sensor Sigma f/1.4 trio (16/30/56).

what's stopping you from using this on apsc?? or you want 24mm ff equivalent on apsc? but 16mm is about 24mm on apsc? What exactly do you want lol

I have the Viltrox 24mm 1.8f STM ASPH ED IF - DW RBW lens and it's small, lightweight, 1.8f, solid AF on the A7iv or FX30. Though I am curious how much more bokeh I'd get with a 24mm 1.4f

I rather and keep my sony 24mm GM, looks more sharp and doesn’t make a distortion and chromatic aberration like that sigma. Looks nice but Sony is Sony, period. Great comparison.

Hey Jason. I'm actually about to pull the trigger on one of these. When you say the Sony is slightly sharper, how much? I mean I'll pay the money if I need to. But I can use the savings to buy a DJI rs3 or something. I'd prefer a sharper image than getting the DJI but if it's splitting hairs, I won't bother. I mentioned this before, but I always watch your videos first anytime an embargo on a product lifts. Love your videos. You do an excellent job combining entertainment while still being detailed

I think the real question is between the Sony 35 1.4 and Sigma 35 1.4 DN, you just skip them both and get the Sigma 24 1.4, take a step forward and save $$$. It’s almost same size and weight to GM 35. Why Sigma couldn’t make a smaller 35 1.4 is a question the universe may never know.

(Imagine You could finetune and store the finder's cropping to ouer taste..!) . How does bokkeh, distortion, grain, ..compare?

Coming from a smart phone, it’s really jarring how every single shot in all of these reviews, the sky is blown out. It just depends on what you’re looking for out of a camera but to me that immediately makes it look like it’s a bad quality shot. hard to compete with a chip in a smart phone, though that’s doing 1 million processes at once. But it’s just kind of hard to be pleased seeing you running up to the camera and just seeing that there is literally no sky and that every single video that anybody does, there is no sky lol.
@jae52247 Жыл бұрын
The sky is blown out because the exposure was set on the subject. It is true that smartphones have way more powerful processors, which allow computational photography not available in current dedicated cameras. But, cameras like this give total control to the user. Depending on what settings are used, the user can take advantage of the camera sensor’s dynamic range to recover detail in highlights/shadows in post processing (S-log for example). In other words, if he had wanted, he could have recovered detail in the sky. It was up to him. However, I do agree that these cameras need to have faster processors for computational photography to give more options/choices in the future. Now, if you don’t know anything about photography/videography and don’t want to learn or put a lot of work, you are better off with a smartphone. There is a reason why even on KZbin, any high quality videos are made with dedicated cameras, not smartphones.

Very nice review, really liked it. But would you say that the new 24mm Sigma is worth the buy if you already have the old version of it?
@JasonVong2 жыл бұрын
Yes for video af performance!!!
@echoauxgen2 жыл бұрын
Ah! First do not get in a hurry to get a very wide aperture lens keep saving your $ for your camera brand lens. All the video guys want the blur/bokeh but the super aperture uses the outside edges of the lens glass meaning it has to be perfect. Example as a Milky Way photographer I bought the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 and using at 1.8 there were many coma's as well as elongated stars only using at f/4 and 5.6 did they get better. You can look at charts photographed and will not see this. It is best to shoot at stars to see problems. Also when using the NPF rules you will shoot at faster shutter speeds vs a f/4 lens so there will be less time for light gathering at that great wide aperture everyone talks about. Remember you are at the edges of the lens glass and anything can be bad in the cutting. Also the aperture parts bokeh is in the number of blades the more the better. AF is a great thing with speed but you will find the maker of a camera tweaks' its lenses better. Bottom line Sony has been at it with mirrorless longer than the new mirrorless makers and every lens goes through a lot and only comes out when it is ready, you may have to wait some. If you have the ability just check out the E 10-18mm f4 OSS of 2013 a 15-27mm in APS-C but can be used in full frame mode from 12mm to 18mm (18mm if you remove the light shield). I used at 12mm for Milky Way way before a mention of a 12mm in full frame. Stars are sharp and no elongated stars at even 30s. This is how well made Sony lenses are from the beginning Sony took over from Minolta and before lenses for Full Frame cameras, even the Full Frame 2014 FE16-35mm f/4 and then the 2017 FE 12-24mm f/4 had perfect stars. All I am stating is the long time keeping things perfect vs a third party low cost version, You get what you pay for and never say Cheap it takes a lot to make. Compare also to the Canon FD 24mm f/1.4 also good at astro/landscape if you want low cost manual focus.

Is few millimiters in size and 65 grams difference really enough to call Sigma heavier and bigger and pay double for the Sony though? Because I don't see any meaningful performance difference. The only reason I would choose Sony is to be sure it will be compatible with all Sony features and new bodies.

On the iPhone 13 Pro, I’m having problems reviewing products because the whole game controller won’t just stay in focus. I was thinking that’s because of the aperture so if I get a nice camera like a mirror, less camera, I could just adjust the aperture. But now I’m not so sure, after watching videos like yours whenever you show the product, part of it looks blurry. I really don’t want that. I want it to look like it looks like for a real human. Whenever you look at a product you can see the whole thing just not the background.

I'll stick to the GM. A bit smaller and the 1.4 performance looks a bit cleaner across frame. The side by side color also looks nicer to me in the skin tones. And to be fair, used 24 GM can be found right around the $950-1000 so the price gap isn't as large.
