I would give this Sigma a long hard look if I didn’t already own the GM. Conversely, I visited London back in March (first time in the UK) and used the 24mm GM extensively during my short trip. I can’t wait to go back, loved it.

Interesting. How do these do on the edge of the shot? You know outside of just the center of the screen? Samyang seemed to get blurry and distorted in another video the subject wasn’t dead center. Specifically during close up shot. See mine wil be for product reviews. Also brings up the question: How does the Samyang compare to these? I thought I saw a video where it did almost everything better than the Sigma. So we are dropping the price down dramatically at that point. Kinda want to get the Sony lens and be done with it - it did seem sharper than the Signma I think. But I’m not sure.

I bought the 24 GM two years ago because of its light weight. Buying a lens, for me the weight is also a huge factor (plus sharpness). In that area the Sigma still loses.

If you don’t like the focal length for portraits couldnt you just crop in 1.5? Or is that best left for video mode

Any insight on which would be better for night sky photography? I have an old EF sigma 24 art which I adapted to my Sony camera. It takes decent shots of the night sky but it is kind of bulky.

Very nice video. Tom I have a question for you: do you plan to make a 50mm roundup for E-mount? I am still on A-mount and plan to buy a FF E-mount soon.. I love 50mm FL and would love to hear your opinion on that! Thanks, and keep up the great work! 😉

I would honestly go with the sigma 24mm f1.4 I own a samyang 24mm f1.8 and even that one is close enough to sony that the difference in price is so not worth it but I would like the sigma more than my samyang just for the build quality alone and also because I have a sigma 85mm f1.4 dg dn.

Heavy Focus breathing… unless you shoot with the A7iv (with focus breathing compensation) which will work only with Sony lenses… Sony was just really smart (and annoying) at the same time with this feature, make you buy only Sony lenses (for video at least) 😅🤦🏻‍♂️

The sharpness chart shows huge distortion for sigma is that real?
@TomCalton
@TomCalton 2 жыл бұрын
The chart is real and is the result of taking an image without lens corrections applied.
@zigalisjak
@zigalisjak 2 жыл бұрын
@@TomCalton digital lens corrections in post effectively crop/stretch the image though, so assuming Sony has 0 lens corrections applied as well to achieve a similar result, that makes it much better in that regard, since the result is achieved optically and not digitally (stretching), which should make it sharper, and possibly wider?
@switchunboxing
@switchunboxing 2 жыл бұрын
@@zigalisjak is there any possibility that because it’s a Sony camera and a Sony lens, it’s doing a correction with software in real time? I’m assuming that’s what smart phones do because my iPhone 13 Pro is 26mm with f1.5 and it never seems distorted to me
@zigalisjak
@zigalisjak 2 жыл бұрын
@@switchunboxing i'm pretty sure phones do all sorts of post processing tricks in order for the photos to come out at least somewhat decent looking. But technically, this shouldnt be the case with these semi pro cameras with RAW functionality, because RAW should be RAW if you ask me. If they are however applying irrevertible post processing to the raw files without us knowing, then that's a terrible manipulation...

This is the only reviewer that look at sharpness at minimal focusing distance and found the sigma is sharper.. I wonder why that is the case though
@TomCalton
@TomCalton 2 жыл бұрын
3 reasons this could happen. 1. Sample variation. 2. The other reviewers could have tested on a different camera to me. 3. I tested the lenses on a lens chart using the same lighting conditions and actually show the results within the video, did the other reviewers you've seen do this too? Most often other reviewers say one lens is sharper than the other without actually showing any results. Or they base that conclusion on real life images, which isn't a fair comparison in my opinion. I hope this helps!

The Sony 24mm 1.4 GM are still the best 24mm you can get ! Remember only to use a Camera with 60+ megapixels sensor when you test Lenses !!! With 24 megapixels sensor Cameras it can be difficult to see much difference.

Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, Laowa and some other third party lens manufacturers all produce cheaply made, dead, flat rendering lenses. No dimensional rendering whatsoever. Especially Sigma and Samyang. The glass in their lenses renders light onto the camera sensor in such a flat way, that micro contrast is basically non-existent by the time the light hits the camera sensor - and people compare them to GM lenses just because they are cheap and sharp. LOL!

My analysis of you is purely from what I see in the comments and you seem to consistently write the same thing across multiple videos, the comments often being multiple paragraphs long, even though no one asked for an opinion on the topic of "micro contrast" or how many thousands of € you claim to have spent on gear. It just strikes me as very odd that you'd dedicate so much of your time to doing this. Hence me asking, do you not have anything better to do? Why do you care so much?
