New SIM card in the hog trap controller

Okay guys look close. This is the first time I’ve shown the inside of my hog trap controller and what makes it work. Had to switch out the SIM card the other day from tracfone to smartalk. Tracfone stopped working when AT&T did away with 3G last month in our area. Smartalk still has a GPS tracker sim plan for $7.50 a month that works. We also baited the trap with 100 pounds of soured corn.

This is what is working as of 5/12/22.
The black box on the top right is just a cheap solar controller for the 20W solar panel that keeps the 18Ah SLA battery charged.

i have an almost identical set up with the KiaoTime and speedtalk SIM. I signed up for the Alarm plan instead of the Tracker plan but imagine it's the same functionality. Set up worked at first but then the SIM seemed to just stop responding after a couple days. Not sure if it's because i set up a whitelist. have you run into any issues since setup?

Still working. Only issue I had was the renewal at the end of the month. Something went crazy with that and I had to go down to the trap and reboot the controller.

If it’s going straight to VM the controller isn’t accepting your call. Most likely a cell signal issue. Does it respond to text commands?

Is your system still up and running at this time? I have a speedtalk sim in my controller that I purchased dec '21, it is a Kiaotime 4g GSM controller which is similar to the controller you have. I know that at&t changed their network around and it will no longer will work via phone call to channel 1 relay but supposedly it will work to channel 2 relay via text, however so far my attempts have been unsuccessful. wondering if I need to update the sim card??

Hi, yes it is still working however the service has been terrible as of late. When you send a command you never know if you are going to get a response and sometimes I have had to go and reboot the switch to get it back online. That’s fine for me as the trap is only a few miles away but I could see that being a issue for someone where that’s not the case. You can also release relay 1 via text command. I did that once when my box wouldn’t respond to me calling it.

For example at 6:11PM I sent the command to check signal strength. I finally get a reply back at 6:49PM. I bet I could probably go down there and reboot the controller and it would start responding almost instantly. It didn’t use to do this and I blame it on the service provider but I haven’t found another that will work with these controllers.

@@MattPatterson1411 Actually I got it figured out!!!! I changed my cell # here a cpl months ago.....pulled the board out of the box and hooked it up to my laptop, as an fyi you cannot change the administrator phone number via text message you have to use the software and hook up USB cable direct to the board. Once I did that I'm good to go now, worked perfect on 5 separate tests. Mine actually still worked using the phone call to channel one, however I did read somewhere that you should wire it up to channel 2 and just use text command straight to your trap cell #. that worked perfect for me every time like that.

@@dougjohnson547 you can also text channel one as well. On mine you can add numbers to the white list via text command. Once the whitelist feature is enabled the controller will only accept commands from those numbers. Anyone else that calls or texts the controller gets no response. I think there can be up to ten numbers on the whitelist. I’ve never connected my controller up to a computer and have always configured it via text command. Of course I’m the only number on the box too so that may have something to to with it.

@@MattPatterson1411 Yes, I set my whitelist via text first time, however since my old phone number was in there in position one (didn't try adding number in position 2 via text, maybe that would have worked) it would not accept a text command. But anyway I reset the board to factory default and set it up again using my new number. All worked, phone call to channel 1, text to channel one & two....see how long it works!!

Not sure I understand what you’re asking but the SIM card isn’t programmed. It’s activated through the cell carrier. The GSM switch is the part that is programmed and that’s done via text message once your SIM is activated and installed in the GSM switch.

@@chrisrobbins6019 no once you have phone number and sim installed in the controller you have to program it via SMS txt. It’s all in the manual you receive with the controller and pretty easy to do.

Does your speed talk sim still work currently?

Yes. I just tried it and it responded to a signal report request. Need to make sure you have a good signal. I’ve tried all different kinds of antennas but a yagi pointed at the closest cell tower has worked the best. Here is the one I purchased.
