New Spektrum DSMX Micro Drone Receiver- SPM4650

The SPM4650 - finally a dsmx micro receiver suited for smaller applications. Is this too little too late? We show how to solder up to a Mamba Flight Stack that does NOT have a 3.3v pad and show you what betaflight commands are necessary to get this to work with the latest betaflight 4.0.
The SPM4650 was not announced with lots of fan fare, in fact, some viewers let us know this receiver even existed.
There is hope for you spectrum users, Spectrum does make High quality Transmitters and upto now, there was very limited full range receivers that would work with all flight controllers.

@@Rckid28 I should have noted again (once I got my DX8 I stopped having any failsafes on dsmx @11ms) I fly wings also so i know how to push my system's and i have to try to hit rth dsmx is a surprisingly good algorithm, as bardwell stated but I am using their first diversity dsmx digital radio (so maybe mines just awesome) but i know allot of guys from McFly to Camden all love spektrum and its a dope system IF you have a decent remote. Ie dx8 or up.. and im using my dx9 with a mod for crossfire. BUT I do have a QX7 JUST in to test, and so far love the feel cant wait to get some range tests in as it's allot cheaper but I gatta admits I like it allot so far.. who will give max range? I will know for sure soon. And will test both r9m and crossfire, so I'm giving frsky a trully fair shake here, and if I stop flying spektrum, Ill deff be saving money. Wouldn't mind a cheaper option n she feels good! but knowing my limitations are is clutch and soon ill be able to say for myself which I like better, but as long as people are flying, doesn't really matter what system! 👊

@@scizzorhandsfpv9547my thoughts on on this are, at the time fpv was getting known u know zmrs, apm, Mr cleanflight , 3s 2204, ect lol I know I was looking for my first radio and spektrum was not a cheap option by ANY MEANS and wanted to just use satalite rxs so when I found a friend with a dx6...I feel for it and it wasent bad but didn't live or trust it fully. Traded for a dx6i it was worse, was about to try the other guy when I found a DX8 and tried it, liked it allot..since then in about 5 years no failsafes due to lack of range lol read up on it, and turns out the Dx8 was there first digital diversity radio's made to be high end for the 200 plus dollar recievers avail for it that did everything but we just wanted shit to work, so anyone who got a digital spektrum w diversity was able to fly crazy range limited only by your 200mw rx with a tiny lil sat rx all this time at 11ms. And there are expensive old rxs that have full telem ect the satalite size and took 5v. But this was over 100$ so I see why they didn't stay the hot shit lol. Quad poilets wanted good enough nothing more at first.. N they got it cheap with open tx and the tyranis and u can see when the DEVS switched from spektrum to to include frsky to it becoming standard lol now 5 years later I'm seeing the same cost advantages of my qx7 like it allot so far and I see why some will never switch and why some will gatta give open source due and big up the movement as love or hate frsky the changed the game pricewise making spektrum no longer the only option for even serious pros.. 😉 I'm seeing now I coulda been saving money but still love Spektrum and if money was no issue I would be happy to have a dx12 and not care one bit... My only point is that yea the majority of people are the type to fly what's popular but in the frsky vs spektrum debate of dead horses with the new affordable frsky radios for both r9m and crossfire, I can only guess sometimes the bandwagon isn't the worst place to be 😂 Lol bigup

This rx should come with a link to this video inside the package.. I would have been scratching my head and/or punching the wall trying to get it working correctly... ***CLI commands a must*** with this rx.. Yes I am one of the nine guys still using Spektrum lol.. The one thing I notice about this hobby, nothing ever has a full/complete user giude explaining how to use, turn on or off features.. Something like this rx should have info about the required CLI commands with it.. Thank you for the great gideo. GO SPEKTRUM!!!! lmao.....

hi Micheal i am the same i got DX8 i got receiver to bind holding button down but receiver not working. my 3 wires are on a plug that goes straight into flight controller. now do i remove one wire and connect it to another plug that says tx uart 1. i have a spedix is100 flight stack ime the eighth guy using spektrum lol

Having been in the Hobby business since 2005, I have seen less than 5 issues with new spektrum radios.. They are a premium price, but they are bullet proof and 1000% reliable.

The higher end ones, like DX9 and up, are really nice. Although, to be fair, me and my fellow club members have lost planes due to mysterious failsafes at our field. Recently, got a telemetry voice warning of 19,000 (yes, nineteen thousand) fades while flying an 88" Yak 54 gasser with AR9350 ($160 receiver) and a DX9. Ugh....

Because I came from RC airplanes, I use Spektrum. I didn't even know what Frsky or Flysky was until I was already fairly committed to DSMX. I haven't had any problems upto now and have well over a dozen micro quads I built myself. I DO miss RSSI on the OSD...

Hey guys this video is good but I would really love it if you did a full walkthrough video on setting up this receiver on this fc board or the Diatone 349 quad but actually do the steps to make it more newbie friendly. Particularly flashing firmware, getting it into bootloader mode and everything else required to make it work. Rather than just saying if your new to the hobby don’t do it. It’s really disheartening for people that dont know everything but still trying to learn. It would be much better to just slow down and explain the procedure required precisely, or even show the whole thing step by step. I have this receiver for a Diatone 349 coming so I watched your 349 setup video a few times, it was also very rushed and confusing to new people to the hobby with the underlying message of “its difficult, confusing and you shouldn’t do it” Actually makes me want to sell my new spektrum radio and go buy a FRsky.

Thanks for doing a video on this, as there is little to no info out there. Even RCG doesn't have much info, despite their engineer's best efforts to answer questions. Then again, the heavy handed "moderating" on RCG and fanboy attacks make RCG not worthwhile to participate in anymore. BTW, SRXL2 being bidirectional is like SRXL, which came out well before F.Port (not S.Port as stated in the video). Oh, and there is a VTX channel function in the first menu too, if you don't want to do it via BF stick commands (shown on the transmitter's main screen). I fly Spektrum because of Horizon's BNF planes (UMX, park flyers, etc.) and for giant scale 3D gassers (AR9350 with AS3X). However, I'm pretty disappointed with the 4648, and especially the 4649T. For their price, they lack a lot of features. Worse yet, they have consistent binding problems (losing bind every power cycle on 4649T or waiting too long for 4648T) and cannot get a workable RSSI in OSD (4649T). Even this new one (which has BF connectivity, like LUA scripts in OTX) will need custom fork of BF 4.0.3 and a set of CLI commands, which doesn't yet play nice with the large variety quadcopters I fly. And... Still no silicone wires despite needing to solder that Rx harness to any FC. That's why I've been switching to FrSky and R9 for my quadcopters.

now if only you didn't have to buy a $700 transmitter to use crossfire with Spektrum. Also the SPM4649T would use a TX pad also. You just have to set it to Spektrum SRXL in betaflight. Using the SRXL you shouldn't have to do any of that CLI stuff either.

I have watched this video time and time again and still mo joy with this receiver. Ive updated quad to latest sofware ive copied and pasted the cli commands ive even used the bind sequence. I got radio to bind by holding down button and connecting battery. But nothing works in betaflight. Any suggestions when i paste in the cli commands it comes up with errors

What do u select in betaflight config tab. (Speksat and 2048 or 2048/srxl?) I have the receiver bound but it does nothing in the receiver tab. I have multiple builds and this has me pulling hair out! I loaded the hex files and even went backwards in beta to see if that would work and nothing so any help would be appreciated

Check the wiring Signal pin on the receiver (labeled "S") must be wired to UART TX pin on the FC.

@@graysonhobby thanks for your quick answer. My receiver connections are all right but if i typ "set serialrx_provider = SRXLv2" in CLI the response is "Invalid Value". My Board is the same as yours. Firmware update is done (to 4.0.4 and even testet with 4.0.3 like in your video). It seems like SRXLv2 option no longer exists.

@@maxun1 i suppose better is relative - better as in reliability, or features, warranty, gimbals.. IMHO there is still not a GREAT radio out in the market, if so we would all be using the same radio.. If Jumper can offer upgraded gimbals, better electrical components, etc - it has the greatest chance of being the best. _ B

So frustrating. No, naturally with this hobby, it didn't work. You buy this stuff with some expectation it'll work. Followed instructions with an F3, flashed 4.0.6 (the current firmware), copied the structured text into the CLI (it didn't recognize 4 of the commands -naturally-), checked, checked, and re-checked... nothing. Naturally. Flop. ...to get a receiver to work?! Seriously!?

Dx6i will not work smoothly on f4 and up flight controllers and it has very low stick resolution. Will fly bad I up dated 2 years ago to a dx9 and never looked back and the dx9 has duele diversity so range is way way beter..
