Telemetry with Spektrum! **RSSI WARNING**

How to get an RSSI low alarm using Spektrum. This is so nice has been the biggest drawback to Spektrum in my eyes.
With a warning, you're able to turn back before unexpectedly going too far
This receiver we're looking at is the Spektrum Quad Race Serial Receiver with Telemetry (SPM4649T): amzn.to/2nDWgZI
- Diversity
- DSMX protocol (11ms latency)
- Runs on 5V
- Provides telemetry data to transmitter
The receiver I used in previous videos was SPM4648. Still a good DSMX diversity receiver but lacks telemetry. Some other small differences
- smaller size
- 3.3 volts (can be plugged into a flight controller's Spektrum satellite port)
- Auto-bind (power receiver before transmitter to enter bind mode.

I thought you wanted to know if it would actually read you a warning, such as when you hit your warning point or at ever 10 seconds it reads off your current signal % (Which is something that we hope to have with our next update) I thought you were already aware of the beep and vibe warning, and wanted to know about a actually vocal reading. If you have G2 DX7 (the black one) yes it has voice, and it will support this feature that Le Drib featured in this video. Also there is a neat program where you can load up to 32 custom sounds to your radio. These sounds can be used for mode changes. Like going from acro to air mode, or throttle hold on, things like that.

Yes custom voice is an option but prefer the voice pack :D. What would be cool too is just like the voltage put RSSI on a switch so I could "probe" an area and ask the transmitter my RSSI value. Because when flying with the goggles on I don't have a clue of the RSSI except when my alarm goes off.

Hey Drew, Just wanted to thank you for this video. I saw this when you initially released it, but I wasn't in a position to jump into the telemetry thing just yet. Well, now I can and I just installed a 4649t in my new Rooster build and it's amazing to finally have telemetry. It works flawlessly with my DX6 and I couldn't be happier. Now I'm awaiting for the Betaflight 3.3 release when we are supposed to be able to take full advantage of the VTX screen and control our smart audio and tramp devices. It really is nice to have another Spektrum guy that I can look to for info and ideas and it's deeply appreciated. Cheers, dave

Drew, great find! The ability to find pertinent data for issues like this can be frustrating to say the least. Kudos for following thru to find the answer, and showing on screen the set up. Unfortunately I have high end JR radios (11X & 12X) that don't have telemetry so I still will have to guess regarding signal strength. The quad rec was a good recommendation though.

Thanks Drew! It is good to see someone else flying Spektrum. I think we still have a disadvantage against the FrSky receivers as Spektrum stuff is still much more expensive. I get RSSI with spektrum I had Chad teach me with smart audio and even some cheaper bangood type builds even have full telem with my Old Dx8 which I love as they made that model with much nicer Gimbels than the rest of the line and it was their first full range but aside from that yes I also have cereal Telemetry receivers like you're showing however I get far better range from the race receivers hooked up to smart audio. Mad love and respect you are absolutely one of the people I look up to quite a bit in this coffee and everybody says I fly like you so you're my boy drib!

DUDE THANK YOU!! I have been so busy flying 3" quads with my turnigy evolution that I hadn't even realized that this receiver existed. I am really excited about this!! Did some looking and found the AR6270T receiver on the spektrum website that has longer antennas and sounds like it was designed for carbon frame aircraft. looks to be 10g heavier but I am really curious if it would perform better still. There are literally no videos on KZbin of it yet. Curious how it would perform against the SPM4649T, and the AR6600T which by the way looks like you could run an additional sat rx plugged into it for at least a third antenna to help maximize signal reception. Sounds like a lot of work to compare all these against each other but it sure would be nice to know which telemetry Rx setup works best for mini quads.

In fact, if they had RSSI capabilities i would still be using it. As i understand it the control delay is as good or better than CRSF. Hey Drew, loving your channel and have been learning a lot. I have a very similar build and was wondering what PIDs you use for a start on tuning mine up. I noticed the other day with a somewhat standard tune that I am getting tons of jello in my GoPro which I did not have before using the Fusion Frame. I am not certain how much my quad weighs but I think its closer to 670g. Can you please send your PIDs and Weight. I am going to try to tune it out on my own first and then see how close I get it to yours. I understand I need to take into consideration using different motors, ESCs, and flight controller.

Thank you so much for the info on the RSSI alarm. I always saw the strength on the iX12 screen but also wondered how to set an alarm for it. I'm a big fan of telemetry and most of my stuff is Spektrum. I'm a plane guy mainly but don't hold that against me 😂 Now if they could only allow customization of the alarm to get a verbal warning from my ix12 like 'signal strength low' instead of a generic beep/vibe. Maybe it's possible already but I don't know how to program it.

Got the new SPM4650, CANT get it to work with my Immersionrc Vortex 180, got it to recognize rx and boot up the wizard, but DX9 controls do nothing, no movement in the wizard. A little bit of separation between the VTX antenna and RC antenna is advisable as you will be swamping the RC antenna with your 5.8g signal reducing the ultimate range.. My only other comment is Spektrum measures in % when a transmission is actually measured in DB.

Perfect timing as well for my build, going from a vortex to a custom build. The funny part is ive only seen the rssi hit on the vortex 2 times but have more than a few timea just fall out on me running this same rx but no tel. port hooked up so going to hook it up and do this for the vortex as well thanks for this videos never can find people doing this for spektrum radios its always on frsky so its extremely helpfully to us new guys getting into this. I have a Diatone GT-M2.5 with Fury F4 flight controller. I am using a spektrum 4649t, the receiver in this video. I can't seem to get any telemtry reading especially battery voltage. Does the Vbatt plug that came with the receiver have to be wired into the FC in order to get battery voltage?

Hey Drew, so I don't think anyone has said/asked this but can't you use the spek_sat_bind cli command to bind, instead of doing that bing plug hocus pocus. I don't have pin headers on my board because there's literally no room for it, so i would have to hard solder the rx wires and not being able to use the cli would be inconvenient, so i just want to clarify if we could bind through cli. Since these % correspond to dBm values. What dBm do you guys think is safe to still fly but pushing it. Like at what point should you turn around/freak out. 24% has been working well for me. Not sure if I can push it further. Also does the dx9 have more range (higher power output) than the dx6?

Great video bro. My conf is this, I using a matek f722-std FC. 4649t promptly updated and Dx9. Flying well. Ihave two issues to ask to you, if you can help me. First, I tried to move blu wire from uart 2 RX to uart 2 tx, set betaflight as your instruction and....stop to receiving input from my radio. Why? F7 chip need the blu wire moving? I read that f7 no need special attention for rx-tx ports, is this the same case? You suggest to try uart 3 tx just to try or you know that I forgot somethings? Second, If I don't care about vtx setting by radio...I need in any case to connect smartaudio wire on vtx? Or is an additional/not essential function? My target is have rssi and voltage on OSD and voltage on display radio. For the second I can use the additional input port directly available on the 4649t...but rssi still be a problem. Good video. I'm a big fan of the 4648 receivers. I think you can bind this one at 11ms, just like the 4648. Do you find you are loosing FPV video signal before loosing Spektrum signal?

yes its DSMX only so it binds at 11ms just like the 4648 Vid vs Spek depends on environment. In the office area I was flying, as you could see vid would drop out significantly behind solid blockage like buildings while Spek hung in there even if I got a little RSSI low. However in an open area like I was flying previously with Rotor Riot, 5.8 did amazingly well and I think video might have even gone further than radio for all of us including the FrSky guys.

YOO Drew, Thanks for covering Spektrum gear. :-) I started flying last spring and got a DX6 gen2, and always had issues finding info covering Spek radio set-ups and what not... Some receivers SPK and not SPK will give the little rssi (bars) signal on the display, you have me thinking that I may be able to go into the flight log and see if I can set up a warning now.... hmmm Also I did add a 2.4 amp from DalRC inside the TX, and that alone has given me piece of mind flying. This issue is more of an issue because the mini quad world is vastly Frsky as drib already said. Spektrum is more predominate in the plane world. Tons of info there. Things such as rssi and other setups are not just a miniquad thing so dont be afraid to go into the airplane world for some info that's pertinent:). I switched to frsky years ago from Spek long before doing miniquads. I hear you on the information thing.

Those bars on the display aren't rssi. Its more of an indicator to tell you that you're receiving telemetry packets.

Once i remove the bind plug it loses power. With a volt meter i get 5 volts at the plug pins. As soon as i remove the bind plug it loses power. I still have 5 volts at the connection pre bind plug wiring

A solution for the voltage is putting it on a switch. With custom voice sequence I've put it on a switch and can ask the transmitter my current voltage. Rocking the switch back and forth gives it again.

In a Spectrum radio can I assign an aux channel to transmit the rssi value like you can in Frsky? This is so the OSD in Betaflight shows an rssi value.

Hey love your videos I went out and bought two of these telemetry receivers because of this video thought I can get RSSI to work but it's still not working you should make an updated video on the subject with like what settings you need in betaflight and what pads you need to solder and is the matek f405 AIO able to send RSSI or whatever it has an RSSI pad I'm confused any help would be very much appreciated I'm using a DX8 G2

I was able to get RSSI working in the OSD yesterday on a F405-CTR and my DX9. Couple of missing steps, that no one mentions, I had to do to get mine to work. 1. You must use the spektrum update software to get the serial number and register it at www.spektrumrc.com/ (Requires USB Adapter www.spektrumrc.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=SPMA3065) 2.!!!!! Critical !!!!!! Update the firmware on the 4649T to 1.1.rc10 (RSSI was introduced in 1.1rc9). 3. Don't know if required, but updated my DX9 to Airware 2.0 4. Went into Channel Assign on TX and Inhibited (unmap) TX Aux 4 (Ch 9 / BF Aux 5) from a switch (Second screen on DX9 under channel assign). I haven't used a DX8 so I assume that its Aux 3 / Ch 8 / BF Aux 4 5. Connect Serial pin of 4649T to TX2, Yes TX NOT RX ( Same as "Smartport"/"Fport" on most diagrams) 6. Then Follow these kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5ScZZVofbeogq8 / github.com/betaflight/betaflight/wiki/Spektrum-SPM4649T-SRXL-Telemetry-setup (Map the "Text General" under telemetry menu. If all went well you should roll your screens on TX and you should see the Betaflight screen on your transmitter and you should be able to configure FC from TX. Under the receiver tab in BF you should see the Aux channel move as signal rssi changes on TX (Under Flight Log screen). I took TX across the room and then cupped my hand over the RX antennas and could see the Aux channel jumping around. Map the RSSI to Aux in reciever tab of BF and Turn on RSSI on OSD. 3 months of beating my head, it now works. :)

Mike Fawbush unfortunately that is way too complicated for me that is so sad that you have to do all of that to get RSSI to work I wish Spektrum would just come out with a receiver that has an RSSI pad on it so we can just solder it from the receiver to the FC... This is depressing.

hello how could you ask for a big favor esque I'm from Mexico so here they do not sell from these receivers and amazon does not send them here and sell them here but it increases double the price and I do not have just bought my quad then it's not plan and I would like to see if I can send you the money and you can send it to me? please
