I feel like this helps to add to the public knowledge about study validity as well as hierarchy of research. Too many people have learned to read a study conclusion and use that information to support their own bias and then have the nerve to report themselves as informed. It almost makes me appreciate research paywalls for public safety.

Being a former obese person I gotta say you're dead wrong. If I felt like shit about my body, I never would have stepped foot in a gym or counted my calories. Feeling better about myself empowered me to be better to myself. Body positivity isn't "get fat as fuck it's awesome!" Body positivity is "so what if you're fat, doesn't mean you're a piece of shit, doesn't mean you're objectively ugly/worthless." People who feel worthless self harm, commit suicide, and don't take care of themselves. The goal is to get people to like themselves enough to take care of themselves

Thanks Layne. I had high hopes for allulose as a sweetener because it was not only deemed harmless but also had beneficial effects of reducing blood glucose and suppressing fat absorption. But then I read a study showing how it glycates proteins even more than fructose. Since glycation contributes to protein damage and aging, would you avoid allulose as harmful for that reason? See the study entitled "Microwave glycation of soy protein isolate with rare sugar (D-allulose), fructose and glucose"

Hey Layne, for me the biggest issue with artificial sweeteners is the research pointing towards deleterious impacts to brain health/function, and the onset of cognitive disorders. I have not seen the research that indicates this, but my partner mentions it to me when I bring up aspartame, and we both have completed our masters in psychology based studies so I trust her ability to discern quality from non-quality research. Have you come across this in your own research, or is this the result of fear mongering via mouse models?

At the 3:00 mark when you were talking about the baseline characteristics of the group that consumed more artificial sweeteners, am I right to think that you mentioned that if it was just one, you can covariate it out, but since there are so many, you casted doubt on the study? I opened the study itself and it says they have adjusted for these factors in their results. Can you or someone help me understand where I'm getting confused here? It looks like the authors have statistically adjusted for the baseline factors and still found the association. Again another study highlighting behaviors associated with artificial sweeteners. For most people, food is apart of their culture and heritage, it's not something they see as consuming nutrients for their body, and the consumption of food is linked with a lot of behaviors / mental issues. You keep trying to say that you need more data and more data is coming out showing the deleterious effects of artificial sweeteners. The people that consume artificial sweeteners tend to be less healthy simply because artificial sweeteners are a cheat, they are an easy choice a person can make to reduce their energy intake, but then these people end up eating more junkfood or smoke or they end up having a sweet beverage and get hungry so they have a snack. One only needs to look at obesity trends and artificial sweetener use. If artificial sweeteners were effective for weight control, we wouldn't have record numbers of artificial sweeteners being sold while also having an exponentially increasing obese population. Diet coke sales have overtaken regular coke sales, for example. If you regularly exercise and meticulously count your calories and have gone through cuts and weight loss, you likely can benefit from artificial sweetener use, if you are 95% of the rest of the population that does none of these, artificial sweeteners are just a cheat that ends up making you more unhealthy in the long run because you haven't taught yourself how to properly eat and be healthy. It is also imperative to understand that the vast majority of studies involving artificial sweeteners, especially long term, are done on rodents, not humans. This includes research that supports the use of artificial sweeteners. We really don't know what these substances do to the human body, and the studies coming out like this one show that there may be a pretty good reason to not utilize them.
