What I got from this is basically go to the pro shop pick an iron you like the look of and is suited to your playing ability hit it a few times on the range convince yourself that all the tech they say that has gone into it is what's making you hit it the extra 10 yards, and not the fact that it's 3 degrees stronger than your old irons across the board, then buy them standard off the shelf, and don't bother wasting your time with a custom fitting such a farce.

+Kristopher Bell how about lie angles and shaft lengths? Although I got my fitting for free I would have been miss-striking the ball consistently with a set of irons I'd spent £££ on. I can see your point though...
@Shnikies78
@Shnikies78 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, to a point he's correct. I mean the lofts are getting stronger and there wasn't much fitting here other than changing shafts. He wouldn't have been able to know to get the loft lowered in the PSI. The real difference comes in when your outside the height of your standard golfer. I'm 6'5, if I tried to play with something off the shelf I would look pathetic. Thankfully I make my own clubs but I have to adjust length plus one inch over standard and lie adjustment 1 degree down. This is where club-fitting really shines. I would also say picking the right shafts for you can be very difficult as well, especially if your not as skilled as Pete. There's a lot more that goes into it than R/S/X/XX, weight being a major factor that a lot of golfers don't account for..

What this video shows is how important emotion is in your choice. You have put up with your Pings for 4 years, great clubs but, they never excited you. I was so worried that you would make the same mistake and buy the PSis because they were available now when clearly, what put the sparkle in your eyes, was the PSi Tour clubs. All people seem to care about now is distance. What I care about is how excited I feel when i pull a club out of my bag. I absolutely love all my clubs and no amount of tech would persuade me to change them. Enjoy your new clubs love and I hope they do well by you ;-)

This was very cool to see/hear what a really good player goes through. I was just asked by a friend that is just really getting started whether a fitting is really good for him...I said yes, even if his strike is very inconsistent. The data doesn't lie.

Love your vids Pete. You strike me as a stand up guy but I'm really dismayed you didn't call BS on the data, even post fitting. If you want a different feel, I get that all day but those gains have nothing to do with the actual club save for loft and length. Crossfield would have at least challenged them on that fact for principles sake. Please don't treat your fan base like we are stupid. We deserve better than that.
@BLKMeSa
@BLKMeSa 8 жыл бұрын
No technology in the PSi's are accounting for those increases in BS, carry, and reduced spin. For reference: s56 7 iron: 34.25º, PSi 7 iron: 31.5º, RSi TP: 34. So the PSi 7 iron is effectively approaching a 6 iron. Therefore reduced loft, more BS, reduced spin, longer carry, plus you may have been pumped a bit to hit the TMs so SS was up a bit. Those factors are what accounts for the 7-8 yard carry increase. You'll also note that the RSi TPs are giving similar spin numbers to the S56, because they are both lofted at close to 34º. I'm happy that you're excited about the new irons and thanks for the video, I always enjoy them.

+Woden of the Angles Completely agree. SW can make a large difference in feel of the club head. Ping irons have traditionally been set to D2 on the PW and D1 for the rest.

They do take a long while to be delivered! Also for the whiners about the loft: the loft on the PSI Tour are for some reason back to a more standard 34° for the 7 iron. I am very glad that you have kept a mixed bag and haven't fallen in love with one single brand. You are still doing a hell of a job and I have enjoyed your vids the last few months!

Pete said that his ping's were 4 years old. Typically, you get new irons every 5 years. I've got the psi tours and I can tell you they are amazing! The comments on this video just goes to show how many people bash Taylormade. I've had 2 sets of pings and the Taylormade psi tours beat them both hands down. Enjoy, Pete.

Appreciate these vids are free and apologies for the negative comments its just strange showing a professional fitting from a master fitter only to order something not fitted for. The RSi TP shown didn't go as far with the standard loft but there was talk of increasing the PSi forged to match the standard PSi; couldn’t you strengthen the RSi TP loft with the same result? I guess if the PSi forged are free the vid was worth doing for the views....$$

Enjoy the new irons Pete. You'll love them. I have the RSi2s and although consistency isn't my strong suit (19 handicapper) and also playing once a week if I'm lucky, they are such an amazing iron. I know I'd be off a much higher handicap if I didn't have them. Like you with your new irons when you get them I know I'll have mine in my bag for a long time to come. Happy golfing Pete and I can't wait for the video when you get them

Ping 7 iron 34.25 degrees. TM PSi 7 iron 31.5 degrees. PSi almost 3 degrees stronger so ur right mate to go with loft rather than what number it says on the club the PSi 7 iron is closer to Ping 6 iron hence the yardage gain.

avg carry with ping 7 iron 160.8.. avg carry with the rsi tp which is very similar in loft 155.0.. a mishit no doubt bringing the avg down there but clearly this "tech" is not giving pete or anyone else extra distance.. ill leave what these slots do on mishits alone but if they were really that beneficial I would assume every club manufacturer would put them into their clubs

My advice guys for what it is worth when you go for a fitting. First of all before you go decide what you are looking to get out of your new clubs be it extra distance, better feel or tighter dispersion etc. Take your current 6 & 7 iron & know what the lofts of your current set are. Hit the irons that suit your eye first but match the loft against your own two irons to get the most comparable test possible. Let's be honest we would all flock to the mfr that would add 10 yards extra compared to your own set but only if the lofts & shaft lengths matched up.

Clubbed speed on PSI is 2 MPH more, combined with the stronger PSI lofts equates to the distance. Nothing to do with the tech at all...
@Shnikies78
@Shnikies78 7 жыл бұрын
The ball is spinning less because the lofts are lower. The reason he reaches the same height is because there is more weight in the back of the club. Moving weight to the back of the club has been done for years but lowering lofts hasn't. I think TM has actually done a good job with the face slots that's the real tech. His miss hits still managed to get out there.

As someone who had RSi irons I am not someone who gives a monkeys about loft and what number is on the bottom of the club, its just a number. One thing the PSi's has done for this fitting is to show an increased smash factor. Those that say the face slots do not work, they do, they definitely increase ball speed. It is not just about being an extra iron longer, its about having an extra iron in you bag so to speak. These irons will bridge gaps and potentially allow for you to discard say a 2 iron in your bag, so that allows other possibilities of an extra wedge etc. All in all, only Pete knows the full set and gapping in his bag, and by taking these irons know what other options this will give him. You have got to think of the bigger picture, where as we are all just commenting on stats from one iron in the bag, but that is all we can do.
@ShotShySheriff
@ShotShySheriff 8 жыл бұрын
+Combobulate Smash factor is obviously a ratio of ball speed to club head speed, which is generally affected by shaft length as a wider arc. It Pete's pings and the PSi were the same length and loft the PSi's would still be around 3-4 yards further in these averages example as the face slots do work and give better ball speed from their trampoline affect, thus a higher smash factor. If you took out Petes first shot with the PSi then at same loft and club length the increased smash factor could give him up to 5-7 yards more per club. You cant help but think that once Pete nails down the PSi then obviously he could really benefit on what he wanted (distance increase in irons), but Im just commenting on what he has actually hit in this demo, not what he could achieve. In this video the dispersion from back to front is too much, but only Pete knows how they felt and what his could achieve with them :) Looking at the video again I was probably too hasty in my initial comment, as if you take the first PSi shot out then the dispersion is probably no worse than the Ping. So based on what I have said above then it is worth the change. Apologies Pete.

I found this very interesting so thank you for sharing. I have a couple of questions 1) what would a fitting like that cost over and above the cost of the clubs? 2) does the fitting benefit an amateur who has a less consistent swing than yourself?

It is refreshing to see that even a very good player, and a pro at that, can suffer from fitting anxiety like I do. In the two fitting session I had, the first five shots or so were complete rubbish. The old trusty X-100s are certainly good for your swing, but wouldn't you have liked to experiment with two or three other different shaft models as well, like the C-Taper or the Nippons many tour pros seem to be switching to atm?

Peter, I truly like you and Rick's demeanor as compared to say Mark's. However, I do feel like both you and Rick's channel are heading in the wrong direction in regards to the brand bias that is going on here, where as I still trust Mark to keep everything very factual. As many others have mentioned you and the majority of your viewers know that there is some serious facts being ignored here in order to put the Taylormade's in the most glorious heavenly light possible. While I do not think it would have been correct or very mannerly to argue the points during the club fitting I do expect someone like you to include some sort of disclaimer afterwards in the video. I wish you all the best, but this appears to be the beginning of a slippery slope. Sincerely, Tony

If these felt a bit heavy why not try the pxi? It has a balance point closer to the grip and may be more comfortable for you. I use the project x (not pxi) in 6.5 and love them. I was in x100's for a while but feel, strike, and accuracy all seem better with the project x.

Very interesting video Pete. Like you say if you just consider the lofts of the clubs, and not the number on the bottom, what are you gaining from the change? You were after more feel, less spin, yardage and the X factor to fall in love with. Did you achieve any of these? I'm guessing that you're a lucky boy and TM arent charging you for the fitting or new irons but it would be interesting info to know prices, which is unarguably the biggest factor for Joe Public.

Honestly...I've been indulging in Pete's , Rick's, and Mark's reviews for a good while now. Pete , this is good insight for a professional fitting, but I am getting the impression that yourself and Rick have sold out a bit on the TM side. Kind of a shame, as when you are looking for the juice on equipment, an un-bias opinion creates value in the review. A necessary mention of the loft game that the manufacturers are playing to make us all believe we are crackin it longer, this should not be ignored. I live in CT and have played "Lake of the Isles". Next time your in my area, there are a good amount of tracks you blokes would enjoy in Fairfield County, not to mention a quick jump into New York. Keep up the good work.....but please don't insult our intelligence in regard to brands and lofts...keep it Real !! P.S. Reviews for mid- handicappers help many...not just the scratch group.

No idea why people get so wound up about "cranked lofts" forget the number on the bottom of the club and look at the set as a whole. The dispersion might have suffered slightly but that's to be expected hitting new irons for the first time especially in a focused environment like a fitting where every single number is going to be scrutinised and don't forget the poor strikes with the Ping were actually removed. Pete I know you want to look down at a "better player" looking club but the reduced spin of the PSI is really what will make the difference for you isn't it?

I think I'd give Pete a mulligan on this one. First thing is that this was not a club review video so he was not there to question any distance claims. Also don't have a problem with him being fitted by TM as he is on a quest to play in the Open so why not use a big manufacturer if they offer. But like others I'm a little bit disappointed he didn't question how much influence the loft had on the 10 yard distance gains. As putting it down to 'tech' is a bit disingenuous. I have no doubt you would get some distance increase if lofts/shaft length were equal between the 4 year old Pings and the new TMs, but surely the loft is a much bigger factor. I agree that people should not get so worked up about the number of the club, but you can't use them to compare across brands/clubs if you are just looking at distance increases and using that as the justification to change. I do appreciate that looks/feel is also a big factor as well though.. Then again to be fair to Pete I expect he knew how much difference the lofts were making, and he was not going to call out TM in the video as they are being very generous to him (again he was not there to review the clubs, but get fitted for them) . It looked as if he was not having his best day when it comes to striking the ball so let's hope he uses them like it sounds he did in the US when they turn up. Also can't help thinking there would not be so much fuss if a guy from say Mizuno or Titliest had said the same thing as they all play the same marketing game to some extent. ;-)

Pete, with Nike, Mizuno, Titleist, Srixon etc bringing out their new range of iron sets over the last 12 months or so, why are you limiting yourself to just what TM have to offer? As you're after that WOW factor club along with other important factors from an iron surely you would be better off exploring your options. Especially with the likes of Titlesit CB's & Mizuno MP5's on the market.Given your swing capability, and based on the results of this fitting video, there has to be something that's going to benefit you more. Great video though with the insight to a proper custom fitting.

It appears that you are trading accuracy for a few extra yards, your current clubs were much more accurate and the distance gain didn't seem worth the dispersion. Surely extra yardage may mean you ultimately have a shorter putt and may save the odd shot, whereas the increased dispersion will be the difference between avoiding bunkers etc which could cost you a few shots. Factor in the time you take adjusting to the new clubs (time away from consistent practice), surely in your quest for the Open, your better of sticking with your current clubs?

Enjoyed that will defiantly get fitted if I ever get the money together for new bats. Wow have you kicked someone's puppy, seem to be getting very negative comments on this one? I understand the lofts are stronger and people get very protective about that but surely from a mid handicappers point of view if the technology allows you to hit wedge through to 4 iron 10 yards longer then who cares. The problem would only come if you can no longer hit 4 and can only hit a 5. Then I would agree all that has happened is the clubs have moved along one. If you still can hit all the clubs but hit them further and straighter with the shorter ones stopping then who cares what the actual loft is. Come on guys where is the love? P.s. Hope you put the nice mans golf ball pyramid back together!

The thing that makes me laugh about the loft and number of an iron is people need to hit 'lower numbered clubs' as far as possible to make themselves feel better! Ignore the number on the bottom and imagine each club has a yardage stamped on it! If I'm playing against someone who hits an 8 iron into the green against my 6 iron and they both land in exactly the same spot surely I've hit a better shot as a longer iron is harder to it??? #LeaveTheEgoAtHome Great Vid Pete and very interested to see if the custom fit works for you

+Killacamfoo O.G. Yeh this is the problem with having irons with stronger lofts it really messes with the very long and short clubs. They cant really have a 1 iron in that range because the 2 is essentially a 1 iron. Pretty stupid i always think, its not the range of irons that matter but the distance between them, use longer irons and you are just increasing the average length of your puts, no thanks. Clubs evolved to a certain sort over decades of tour use for good reason, now the weak minded are clambering for longer and the manufacturers are pandering to the new crock of gold, they are welcome to them ;-)

I went from a set of Taylormade CB 14 to the FlyZ + and Pro as a combo set custom fit by myself as I worked at a golf shop and was a certified fitter. Oddly enough, with the lofts being as much as 3 degrees weaker in my new set, my distances haven't changed much. Spin rates are better and I can actually hold a green with long irons. The CB 14s are pretty much the same as the PSi. I am surprised that the fitter here recommended subtracting loft from his PSi tour versions as that will decrease his launch angle, decrease spin, and make it harder to hold greens if he doesn't hit the ball higher. Perhaps that's why he recommended KBS tour as they are slightly higher flight. Either way, the PSi tour is a great club. I'm sure they will "feel" better than the S56.

Not convinced by that... haven't you just got a 6 iron with a 7 written on it and got worst dispersion? Couldn't you just paint a 7 on the bottom of your current 6 iron? I'm being facetious, but I don't understand how the new set is an improvement.

+Peter Finch Golf I'm no where near your standard of golf but I can twat an iron my clubs were second hand in the mid 90s and my 7 iron goes 130-140 yards max. The pitching wedge is a 90 yard club, I do the impression that the numbers on them are arbitrary now and that 7 irons can't be compared so when your on the tee of a par 3 and you are trying to hit the shortest club compared to your mate (and out alpha male him) becomes somewhat pointless...... (beats chest).. .

pete, i'm also in the boat of liking yours and rick's beginnings but being a little disappointed in where your channel particularly is going. i'm not sure who the cheesy music-laden vlogs are for but i'm not sure many of us are digging them at all. feels a little like you're just showing off your swing at times. this video is very strange too. there are a lot of comments and i have to agree with most of them. i want to see a quality fitting where we see numbers genuinely improve not just because of cranked lofts and lengths. i come out the other end thinking that fittings are a waste of time. that can't be good. get the monday night golf show back. that was the one niche thing that you had to really showcase your and rick's strengths as a pair. good luck!

People need to get off the loft number being different. With the technology put into place to improve launch and spin conditions, loft needs to be adjusted to optimize performance. If he were to crank his loft of his S56 7-iron to match the PSi 7-iron he would NOT get the same performance by any measure be it spin, launch, ball speed, or distance. Leave the physics to the experts and just enjoy the benefits of all their hard work and development!

PSI Tour is no different than the RSI Tour other than badging and a "P" in place of the "R". I doubt TaylorMade has made a huge advancement in iron technology since the RSI was launched 8 months ago. All that so called "Tech" in the regular PSI you were hitting is nothing more than cranked loft, compared to your Ping Irons. When you did hit the RSI Tour, which is a more comparable iron to your S55, you appeared to hit your Ping irons better. If that excites you then go for it. seems like you're drinking some TaylorMade Koolaid! And you basically got fit for an iron you never hit? No lie angle testing? This should be a video of what not to do when getting fit for irons. Love the TaylorMade guy selling you on the "Tech", LOL!

Obviously, like you said, current clubs just dont wow you, but personally find newer pings better back to front than TM. Interesting to see how a Ping fitting would go. You pays your money, you takes your pick. Just personally nothing in the video stood out to me for a change, except distance, but couldn't you just krank the Pings?

Cranked lofts!!!!!! 7-iron Ping vs a PSI 6-iron with a number 7 stamped on it. It would have been a fairer test to have taken the numbers from your 6-iron and compare that to the PSI 7-iron, when really that's what the PSI is, a miss stamped 6-iron. Don't understand why companies are saying their products go further when really all they've done is change the loft from a 7 down to a 6, which obviously will spin less, have a lower launch and ultimately fly further....#nothing feels like a mizuno
