We took a trip to Eurobike 2022 and decided to film an update video with Steve Boyd from Tern Bicycles. There are a lot of exciting new updates for this year including the new Tern NBD and Quick Haul.

Aside from the carrying capacity, especially the ability to carry an adult rider, the other two big selling points for the GSD for me was the ability to ride upright and a step through design. In the two years of owning my GSD I’ve never felt the need to change my handlebars. Love upright riding.

Ah, that NBD looks great, and I could really appreciate that super low step. I don't care about being macho, I do care about being able to easily get on and off the bike. Nice video.

I like the NBD a lot. It offers something a bit different to the existing models, and keeps the highest quality components. I’m not a fan of the Quick Haul personally. I don’t think you should ever skimp on anything on an e-bike. People are cross-shopping them with a car which costs tens of thousands plus huge running costs. Even an EV will cost a lot more to run. Bikes should always be the best you can possibly build them (within reason obviously). Which is why I admire companies like Riese & Muller, and Tern to a large extent who just find the components they want to use, and say ok that’s the price. That’s how it should always be done.

"Many man have problems with the low step concept" haha exactly that was my father, who wanted to have a regular diamond frame cycle. Now he bought exactly the same bike as my mother has with low entry and is super happy about it.

Tern always seems to be on the ball (bike!!) with the type of bike that real people need to fit into their everyday lives. I currently ride a Tern Link D8 that also accompanies me in my campervan on vacations here in the UK, and it works well for pretty much everything I need it for. As I have got older I can see the advantage of electric assist and this may be factored into my next folding bike purchase. However, I also have hip osteoarthritis and as low as the Link D8 stepover height is even that can be painful to get on and off some days. I am ok when I'm on the bike and pedalling as the bike has taken my body weight, ( I'm a big guy! ), off my hips but getting off after a ride can be painful for me. Not sure if there is anything that Tern could look at for us less able riders that still want to carry on riding the bikes we love.

Good choice I think. We took the HSD because it was faster to get back in April, when the QUick Haul was just announced but not deliverable yet. So we opted for a 2020 HSD which we got for a good price.

@@DaNiePred yeah I almost got a used gsd but it fell through, think I will be happier with the quick haul anyway cause the gsd was probably overkill for my purposes and I think the higher top speed of the p9 will be useful for parts of my daily route

As a 6’2” male I have no problem riding a low step bike. I think the low step is the way to go. On having to get off quickly there is no chance of me hitting my man parts.

I’ve never heard of tern before, slick looking bikes! One criticism is the battery being exposed. Here in the UK that’s an easy target for thieves. I wonder if there’s plans for a slightly more subtle design?

Thieves would not back off of any bike with an in frame tube battery, as their locks can be broken as easy as the others, so that doesn't make a huge difference. Me personally I like the PowerPacks more than the PowerTubes as the frame can be build more slim. If you want to get more protection to the battery, there are special add on locks or for the HSD, Quick Haul or NBD you put the short bed tray on the back vice versa, than you cannot take out the battery without unscrewing the tray first.

I like this bike but I'm not crazy about the folded handlebars or the folded adjustable handlebars I'm from the old school I like the original stuff if I had the money I would buy one but I don't have the money but is there a bike light on this in is there a horn that is loud and some mirrors and if I had my choice to call her it would be a bright neon yellow in case of an emergency you had to write at night for some reason but I do like all the accessories that comes with it

On some Ebikes I see numbers but don’t know their purpose? Are they a suggestion based on one’s height? They seem to be measuring the post in some fashion but for what purpose?

Do you mean the scales on the seatpost? That is more or less for measuring. Useful when you share the bike with others, e.g.yourp partner, than you just need to remember the number on the scale if you shift the saddle up or down.

Tern is very practicable as children grow and will outgrow cargo bikes quick. We do need dealers to carry batteries so we can hire these batteries as we fly our small e-bikes around the world for holidays or even business. Australia & New Zealand R&M dealers have batteries for hire, but R&M Honolulu is not interested in hiring e-bike batteries.

I’ve owned a GSD S10 for 3 years but it wears-out a chain every 1200km!!! After riding 20,000km, thats a lot if chains and a lot of money. Tern-Please fix this!!

The designs are great. Swapping for car at this pricepoint? Not going to happen for most, especially those who work lower paid jobs. Bikes like this are for the upper classes and that's fine. If a manufacturer would come alone and design a bike like this and it be actually 'affordable' the floodgates will open.
